2022-23 Bubbleville: "Are we seriously talking about this already?"

Unread post by RhowdyRam02 »

Yes! Is it too early to talk about the bubble? Absofuckinglutely! That said, ESPN has us as 3rd team out going into the season, College Sports Madness has us as a 12 seed as the Atlantic 10's champion, and frankly I'm using this as a way to learn more about women's college basketball. So as long as this is relevant, I'll do my best to update. Probably going to be spotty here in the beginning because the tournament picture is so imprecise, but since it's opening day of college basketball I'm pretty excited.

Seems like a good time to check back in since we're the A10 automatic qualifier, and a 13 seed, in both the College Sports Madness and ESPN brackets. Also both websites have schools with worse NET rankings on the bubble, even if they have those schools ultimately out. I think I'm only going to update this thread when one of the websites releases a new bracket and add these games to the games of interest thread.

Bottom Line.
We will probably play UMASS two more times. If we win Thursday night, we need to run the regular season table and make it to the conference finals. We can lose that game. The other scenario is we lose Thursday and beat them for the conference championship and we're in. The third option, which I prefer is don't lose until the NCAA Tournament. If that happens, we could end up in a 5-12 game or a 6-11. I like our chances in that scenario.

The A10 is now officially a one bid Conference, if they weren't the entire time. They are only going to project the auto bid qualifier in the brackets, and it just goes to UMass as a placeholder, the way URI was the placeholder for a good portion of the season. But winning the regular season conference Championship has basically no bearing on who is going to the tourney. Whoever wins the A10 Tourney finals goes. And URI is among at least 4 teams who are vying for that opportunity.

IF... playing the IF game... URI had beaten Princeton instead of losing at the buzzer, and had also beaten Fordham instead of losing in similar fashion, at the buzzer. It may have been interesting if URI could have been a bubble at large team, even if someone else won the A10 tourney. Hopefully, in future years, that could become a possibility.

If URI loses the finals and doesn't get the autobid: No.

And, I believe UMass's chances of losing to URI in the finals and getting an at-large/bubble bid, died, when they lost to St Louis, otherwise, it might have been interesting to see if they could have pulled that off with a 27-5 record combined with their NET if they had not lost to St Louis.

Probably not. UMass is currently at 58 NET, and URI is at 69. Here are the NETs for the OOC wins URI had this year: Dartmouth (313), Providence (127), Coppin State (296), Southeast Missouri (270), Samford (256), Buffalo (220), Maine (209) and Hartford (361, currently 0-26 and dead last among all teams).

Michigan State being 47th in NET, but ESPN's 8th out, seems kind of strange. But they're 7-10 in conference play, and 16-13 overall. Even if they've played a really tough schedule because of being in the Big 10, yeah, they're probably not going to get an at-large berth.

Oregon is even more strange. 19th in NET, ESPN has them last in, CSM doesn't have them in or first four out. 17-14 overall, 7-11 in conference play. Will be interesting to see just how much the women's side values NET over results
