I don't think he was high on our list at this point anyway.

Meaning we didn't think we could get him, that he was out of our reach? Or that we have guys on our list that we think are better?rambone 78 wrote:I don't think he was high on our list at this point anyway.

After getting Tate the staff is concentrating on guards and PFs.

Does that mean we should pretty much assume that SF's are out then? ie Gebrewhit? there are quite a few with offersIggy1979 wrote:After getting Tate the staff is concentrating on guards and PFs.

Re: '18 SC SF - Jimmy Nichols Jr. (Offer)
This class needs at least two guards, if not 3, and they're pursuing some big forwards. And they'd like to keep open a spot for a transfer. So SF is not a priority at the moment but things can always change.

Re: '18 SC SF - Jimmy Nichols Jr. (Offer)
We need two wing players, one that is a combo (can handle bringing the ball up if needed). Gebrewhit is a wing.
He can shoot - the single biggest need in 2018, so I hope he is still in the mix.
You can be 6'6" and still have guard skills.
Modern day basketball - a 'guard', three wings and a stretch 4.

So isn't this the same role that Jimmy Nichols fulfills?rhodyblue12 wrote:We need two wing players, one that is a combo (can handle bringing the ball up if needed). Gebrewhit is a wing.

Re: '18 SC SF - Jimmy Nichols Jr. (Offer)
I don't know Jimmy Nichols' game too well, so I can't comment on that ramster. But I do think that classifying guys as "PG, SG, SF, PF, C" has its shortcomings. Especially guys that would have traditionally been thought of as a three, there are several different types of players that could be in that role. I'd assume that getting a commitment from a guy like Tate would remove a certain type of three from our remaining targets but leave other types of threes on the board - as was mentioned, a guy who is essentially a taller guard who can handle a little bit and score from the perimeter would likely still be of interest, but a smaller forward whose game is more about physicality and is more comfortable scoring at the rim may not be a need.

Re: '18 SC SF - Jimmy Nichols Jr. (Offer)
Not 100% sure, but Nichols looks closer to that 'stretch 4' type guy than a wing.
He does not put the ball to the floor much in his videos.
Tate seems much more adept - he can get downhill to the basket already.

It seems like we're recruiting bigger, more athletic guards right now, guys who are 6'3"-6"6"....Jeenathan Williams, Ant Nelson, Matt Balanc, Tyrese Martin. I'm guessing that going forward, if we're going to play 3, or even 4 guard lineups, with Fatts being the true PG, that we'll need bigger, athletic guards to play with Fatts, especially on the defensive side.

Re: '18 SC SF - Jimmy Nichols Jr. (Offer)
Seems they only take short guys if theyre really good.
Jarvis, Jared, Fatts. Shortest 3 guys I think they have recruited. All of them are studs.
Probably want length regardless of the position and then they back off that if the guy is dominant. Jarvis and Jared were. Fatts last year in high school was off the charts.

Jared is probably 6"2" and built like a bull. I wouldn't call him small/short.

It doesn't appear as cut and dry. Nichols lives in SC and they have hosted him unofficially a few times. Don't know if Miami is a serious contender either.

Re: '18 SC SF - Jimmy Nichols Jr. (Offer)
Seems he has made his choice of PC over the weekend. He would not announce if it was USC and yet, his USC visit is planned for this weekend. He wanted to get back home so he could announce on local TV his choice. But no Official Visit to Miami or to USC makes this TV announcement pretty anti-climactic, no?
6-7 Jimmy Nichols took an official visit to Providence over the weekend and now he’s ready to announce a commitment between the Friars, USC and Miami. He will do so on WPDE TV-15 in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday shortly after 6:00 PM. As of Sunday night, Nichols said he had not made his decision.
Nichols said he enjoyed his visit to Providence and saw several things about the program and the school that he liked.
“The way that they play, how small the college is, everybody knew who everybody was, the players are close and I like Coach (Ed) Cooley and all the assistants,” Nichols said. “I just wanted to see what Providence had to offer because I know what Miami has and I know what South Carolina has. I took an unofficial to South Carolina. I haven’t been to Miami but I have my own thoughts about Miami. I talk to them a lot and I like Miami, too.”
Nichols said he last talked with USC before the visit with Providence.
As for what will be the biggest factors in picking the school, Nichols said, “Conference, how big the conference is, and the opportunity I’ll have to play.”
USC has yet to offer Nichols but he said the Gamecocks had planned to do so on his official visit which he had scheduled for this coming weekend.

Re: '18 SC SF - Jimmy Nichols Jr. (Offer)
Correct, the rumor for a long time was that if USC had offered, Nichols would attend school there. It's quite possible that USC quietly offered Nichols around the time of the PC visit and thus the expedited announcement or that he was so blown away on his PC visit that he pushed the time frame, I suppose either one is a possibility.thatRamBand wrote:It doesn't appear as cut and dry. The thing that threw me off in his quotes was about how playing time was a big factor. If that is the case, it makes me think he is heading away from PC. There is no guarantee for minutes at PC - he can fight for them but there are no glaring openings on the roster for him where you can say "He can definitely get minutes there." Just at the 1-3 they'll have Top 100 guys in MAL, Reeves, and Diallo, and returning players like White, Edwards, and Jackson. Plus, they have Monroe whose committed, plus they are still recruiting Duke and Locke.

Re: '18 SC SF - Jimmy Nichols Jr. (Offer)
Minutes at USC and Miami are far from guaranteed either.
If this was a concern in the final decision one would think he would make the official visit this weekend as scheduled to USC and his official to Miami.
By not making those Official Visits would make if very surprising to not pick PC
Looks like he just wants the fun and suspense of announcing on local TV - can't blame him but surprised he is announcing this soon. Maybe the interest from USC and Miami is not so strong? Who knows.

The article that "ThatRamBand" posted the link to is what refers to the school as USC, multiple times. How is that so confusing?ATPTourFan wrote:Yeah, at least on this site can we not call South Carolina "USC"?

Did you read the article? It mentions USC 3 times. Also mentions "Friars" which I am sure has the South Carolina population confused too.Billyboy78 wrote:Well, I am in neither.ramster wrote:Throughout the south and the SEC Conference.

4 of 5 experts on 247 now predict Providence College Friars.
1of 5 predicts University of South Carolina Gamecocks
None pick Miami
Providence is now listed as the favorite
Funny how These guys change their selections, even at the late hours, so then I suppose that goes into their picking accuracy? Wait till the announcement at 6pm and could have the last guy switch too making it 5-5 perfection!

I think scarier in a year or two when their current FR and SO are upperclassmen. We have to beat them this year or future looks much tougher for wins. Cooley certainly leveraging 5 straight tourneys, 4mm per year and no clear #2 in the new BE to his advantage. Building a strong program.
