Week #17 – Games of Interest/A-10

Unread post by Obadiah »

Today begins Week #17, the last week of the regular college basketball season. The A-10 conference standings are still in a state of flux, but barring shocking ending, it looks like the tournament's double bye winners are VCU, St. Joseph's, Dayton and St. Bonaventure.

The teams certain to finish in the middle pack are GW, Davidson, URI and Richmond. The next four teams - Fordham, Duquesne, UMass, and Saint Louis are battling to stay out of the Wednesday play-in round and two of them will not make it. George Mason and La Salle are certain for Wednesday play.

Right now URI is in a good position to take the seven seed position. The Rams can leap frog Davidson to get sixth seed only if Davidson loses it's last two games - at VCU and a home date vs. GW - and URI wins its two final contests. Both UMass and Fordham will have extra incentive in those games given they are fighting to stay out of the bottom four.

URI could fall to eighth place if the Rams lose the final two and Richmond wins its final two - at home against wobbling Dayton and a road trip to GMU.

If URI wins the seven seed we will play at Barclay's on Thursday in the 6:30 PM game against the ten seed

In the polls, Dayton has now completely dropped out of both polls and no A-10 teams are currently ranked. St. Joseph's gets the most votes in both polls, followed by Dayton in the AP poll and Dayton and St. Bonaventure in the USA Today poll.

No A-10 games on the schedule on leap day.

This is the last installment this season for this type thread. This thread has its greatest impact when URI is fighting for an at-large invite to the NCAA and tracking our RPI and the impact of our opponent's game results and RPI is lots of fun, as is the discussion of other games of interest. Despite high hopes over the last four years, this thread's relevance has not reached it's full potential. I hope I haven't jinxed the process. Someday I just want to see that ant move that rubber tree plant.

Thanks to everyone of you who contributed to making this thread and this forum one of the best in CBB!!

Obi those 4 teams are locked into the top 4 as GW has lost to both UD and SBU and would lose the tie breaker

Two A-10 games on the schedule Tuesday night:

* Dayton at Richmond. 7:30 PM. On CBS Sports. Richmond can only overtake URI in the tourney seeding if it wins its two final games, so for that and other reasons, we should root for Dayton to win this one.

* George Mason at GW. 8 PM. If GW wants positive momentum to carry them into the A-10 tournament and beyond, this is a must win.

a loss by Richmond means URI can't finish worse than 7th regardless of any other result

URI would win a 2 way tie with Richmond and a 3 way tie with Richmond and Fordham (UR and URI would be 2-1 vs the group and URI would then win the head to head once Fordham is eliminated)

We could be locked into the 7 seed before we play on Thursday if Richmond loses tonight and Davidson wins tomorrow

The Dayton board is melting down since they lost to us.

Hell, they could be even worse off. They could have easily lost to St. Louis and to us the first time we played.

A couple more losses and they might even fall to bubble status and have to win a couple in NY. Richmond tonight on the road and VCU at home. No cakewalk.

Epic collapse if it happens. I still think the A10 gets 4 in however.

They'll be fine once pollard is 100 percent and they'll be ready to gun down teams in the dance.

Last time Dayton got run off the floor by Rhody they used it as the turning point and wound up in the Elite 8. They will be alright.

37-32 Richmond at the half.

Dayton is teetering. I'm guessing they pull this out though.

Or else they might have to beat VCU Saturday.

By the skin of their teeth, 85-84.

They are in the Dance for sure, doesn't matter how shaky they are right now.

We could play them again Friday night.

Guarantees us no worse than 7th if we beat UMass.

Dayton pulls it out, 85-84! Scoochie had 26 points. T.J. Cline had a monster game putting in 36 points.

Four games highlight Wednesday evening A-10 Action:

* Saint Louis at La Salle. 7 PM. La Salle is in the play-in game, but SLU still has a theoretical chance to escape that fate except this road game and the home date against the Bonnies may be a bridge too far for the Billikens..

* Davidson at VCU. 7 PM. On CBS Sports. Davidson looks to have the sixth seed, but facing VCU on the road and GW at home is no gimme!

* Fordham at Duquesne 7 PM. Both schools are desperately trying to stay out of the PIG.

* Saint Joseph's at Saint Bonaventure 7 PM. Both schools are in the double bye category, but SBU needs the win to enhance their resume for an at-large NCAA invite. The game under special sponsorship is being held at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, NY.

It looks like VCU will win their game, and also the Bonnies have an 11 pt. lead at halftime against St. Joes.

If VCU wins and St. Joes loses, I think that clinches 1st for VCU. They will be 14-3, and the others 13-4.

Twisted, would they lose any tiebreakers in a 3 way with Dayton and the Bonnies, or Dayton and St. Joes, if they lose to Dayton on Saturday?

VCU took care of Davidson, 70-60. That's one down.

Looks like the Bonnies will take down the Hawk. Of course espn's feed went down as usual with about 2 and half to go....

Update: they did, 98-90.

Helps them toward an at large NCAA berth.

Best result for the A10 there. Maybe 4 will go after all.

Another big break for the effin Fairies as Creighton's very good point guard got hurt early in the game and really was a non-factor. You cannot lose your point guard and expect to win on the road in a game like this. He averages 15 a game and got 6 tonight. His speed was limited as he has a groin injury.

The fact they might go winless in conference in both football and basketball is astounding.

Arizona State beat Stanford last night, for those of you who still don't like the Cardinal. It was the 5th conference win for ASU.

It's been quite a year out in Tempe- one player quit after a fight with the coach, two were stopped for possession of marijuana (suspension for one, the other one's gone), a transfer sitting out was suspended and now seems to be gone, another player suspended but now back, a coach arrested for DUI.

There are all kinds of ways to react to challenging seasons. Rhody's doing it right.

Speaking of deserving...the CFL elimination party can begin. Our Griff friends' season ended at the hands of Iona tonight. They were 14-19.

Also, I saw Bill Simmons (Holy Cross grad) extend an offer to BC to join the Patriot league. Ha BC is as hilarious at sports as UMass. What a state I live in.

With Duquesne's win over St. Joe's we get either them or umass in the first round, St Louis has been eliminated as a potential opponent. We get Duquesne if UMass loses, if UMass wins then it will come down to tiebreakers.

What's the tie breaker? If its head to head, UMass beat Duquesne. If Stl loses (5-13) and UMass wins (6-12), I think UMass would get the 10 and Duquesne (6-12) the 11.

BC clinched a winless in conference record today losing at home to Clemson finishing 0-18 in the ACC. Couple that with Rutgers win over Minnesota today and BC has clinched the title of worst power conference basketball team this year.

BC basketball and football combined to go 0-26 in conference play this year. 10-33 overall.

Jim Christian's incoming recruiting class is less than spectacular. Does Christian get a 3rd year? Can you even trust the BC AD to get this hire right? BC was courting St. Bona HC Mark Schmidt but chose Christian instead.

Will be interesting to see what the future holds over on Chestnut Hill for Brad Bates and Jim Christian.

Well, looks like we get Duquesne and if we were to win that, we get VCU if they lose to Dayton.

Not looking good for more than one win.

Oh well......not all bad. St. Joes slipped back toward the bubble with their loss.

GW fell off the bubble.

A10 gets 3-4 in the Dance, and either 2 or 3 in the NIT, depending on whether 3 or 4 get in the big show.

6 total.

If VCU beats Dayton and StB beats Stl, VCU will get the 1 seed (15-3); Stb the 2 seed (14-4); St Joes the 3 seed (13-5 with a win H2H vs Dayton); and Dayton the 4 seed (13-5).

That means we would play Umass / Duquesne, then St Bonn., then St Joes.

Of course we still have our late game bugaboos to deal with.

Although tonight, I wouldn't blame Dan for any of it, to be honest.

I mean, not counting JT, we shot it at 65% tonight.

The problem was getting shots, not missing them. Too many mistakes toward the end.

In a game just concluded, Yale beat Columbia, 71-55, giving Yale the Ivy League title and their first invite to the Big Dance since 1962! And we thought URI has waited a long time!

Yale is actually the second team in the Dance so far, as Austin Peay beat UT-Martin earlier today to garner the Ohio Valley title and automatic invite.
