CBS Sports - 2015-2016 Top 101 Players

CBS posted their top 101 players for the 2015-16 season. URI was the only A10 team with 2 players ranked in the top 100 (EC and Hass), while Deandre Bembry was the highest ranked A10 player at #22. Kris Dunn was ranked as the #1 player in all of college basketball.

Good list, nice to see Ram representation.

I don't know how Perry Ellis still has college eligibility. Isn't he like 30?

Looks like a story about Hassan is coming soon to. Glad he is getting the recognition he deserves.

Good to see. I think they missed by not including Dayton's Kendall Pollard, and They must be assuming Pierre won't play
because he would have to be included otherwise. So URI has 2 of the A10 4 players and aren't considered the best team
in the A10 by everyone?

What do you guys think Dan's plan will be to defend Dunn?

PG on PG to start and we'll see how far Garett has come in one short year. Not foolish enough to think Garett will lock him down per say but I do think he will give Dunn a good challenge, good enough to allow others to help, last year Dunn had his way with us, this year I expect he will still be the man but it won't kill us as bad.

I would assume throwing a bunch of different guys, excluding EC, at him. (The only reason I say "not EC" is because you usually don't have your own main offensive option tax himself on both ends, if you can.) I also think that PC is weaker overall this year, so, I imagine they'll try to get Dunn to pass as much as he can, and to force other players to beat them.

I say throw Terrell on him, and let him go to work.

I know Dan isn't a fan of zone but a one may not be the worst thing against them, I don't know how their outside shooting is but in a zone you keep a couple set of eyes on Dunn and have layers if the first guy gets beat

Assuming we have the depth, everyone takes a turn -- the key part to me is force Dunn to give up the ball on a double team when he gets into the offensive zone and then everyone takes a turn at denying, denying, denying-- has to wear one player out; of course a shorter shot clock also helps.

Best idea for Dunn will be to throw multiple looks at him, he is too good for any one of our guys to contain for a full game. I bet you could even see Akele get some minutes covering him. Some zone would help mitigate as well. Dunn is going to get his every night (barring foul trouble), the idea is to make him work as hard as possible on both ends and make the other guys beat you. In the end PCs season makes or breaks based on 5-6 guys with 0-1 years of experience. An early season game in a very hostile RC should be too much for them.

3 of the Top 90 players, including the number 1 ranked player in the country, play college basketball in little ole Rhode Island. Boy how times have changed.

How have times changed?
Sly Williams, and Lamar Odom were
All Americans.
PC has had a slew of great players over the years.
Rhode Island has been well represented over the years.
The only thing different is multiple media coming up with
lists of all kinds.
It's a long way from Street & Smith and a couple of other magazines.

Lamar Odom was in 1999, Sly Williams was in the 1970's.....

Also, the best college player in the country is in RI.

I would say times have changed, compared to the last few Baron years and the Keno years.

Agreed. Very rarely is there so much highly regarded talent (30% of our combined starters) widely recognized near the top. I think we'll see URI and PC dancing this year, which is great for the state.

Hassan's profile is really increasing...his first year he was an afterthought to EC for most besides the diehard URI fans that appreciated the dirty work he was doing. Last year his stats jumped and he got a little more shine, moreso by the end of season when the A10 media started to take notice...but not enough for him to even win A10 Defensive POY (given emeritus to Briante Weber, deservedly so). Now in some cases he is the name people are talking about most, even over EC. He is on track to be one of our top forwards of all time, sky truly is the limit for him, hope he shows an expanded offensive game this season as that is the last piece of his development.

Is there any chance Hassan is being looked at by the NBA after his junior season?

My guess is that it is an extremely slim chance, but I doubt he'd be getting enough attention to think about leaving school early. For that to happen, I think he'd have to show a pretty strong perimeter game to go with his defensive abilities. As good as Hass is, the NBA isn't rushing to draft undersized post players who are more or less relegated to playing in the paint.

All that being said, he'll probably get some attention/consideration after his senior year, as he'll be a 4-year starter with an elite skill (shot-blocking). Those guys tend to at least get a shot at the next level. Long way to go from here though and it'll be a fun ride watching it.

Interesting to look at how that 13-14 A10 All-Rookie team has developed:

EC, Hassan, Bembry, Jalen Jenkins, and Jon Severe.

Three of the best players in the conference, and two guys who have shown flashes but are wildly inconsistent.

CBS Sports is doing a full preseason ranking of all 351 D1 teams. Hassan is getting NBA notice in their write up of Rhody. (Plus, #34 is not too shabby!!!)

34. Rhode Island: The Rams bring back most of their roster from a top-10 defense last year, including two potential eventual NBA picks in E.C. Matthews and Hassan Martin. They might not be the favorite in the A-10, but they're certainly near the top.

Edit: missed that there is a topic on this.
