Game #21: @ Richmond - Sunday @ 2:30pm

Unread post by ATPTourFan »

Rhode Island (15-5, 7-2 A10) returns to action after their conference bye week Sunday afternoon at the Robins Center against the Richmond Spiders (12-10, 5-4 A10) at 2:30pm. The game will be nationally televised on NBC Sports Network and as always, available via FM radio and online streaming on B101 via the Rhody Sports Network.

KenPom.com sees gives the Spiders a 71% probability of winning and predicts a 58-54 score.

Richmond lost a close game this week at La Salle after scoring a huge road rivalry win against A10 power, VCU. Rhode Island enters this game having won their last 4 A10 games and 10 of 12 going back into December. The Spiders are undefeated at home in A10 play with road losses to Dayton, La Salle, Davidson and GW. Rhody has lost only once on the road in conf play up in Amherst, MA.

Key match-up: Garrett on Anthony.

Garrett is listed at 6 feet; Anthony at 5-8. But Anthony is incredibly quick and creative. He gets in the paint and gets shots off and/or fouled against much bigger players. To me, the key is not to foul him. Don't send him to the line 10 times.

yeah, but if one is listed 4 inches shorter then I'd have to say he's shorter. And it certainly looks that way to the naked eye.

Possible that we play TJ or Terrell on Anthony if he starts lighting it up?

Anthony is really quick. Maybe Terrell could keep up with him, but I doubt TJ could.

Jarvis should do OK on him, but if not JT would get the assignment I would think.

The guy I'm more worried about is the new guy TJ Cline. He's added another dimension for them. We will need all our bigs to play well, to win this game.

Also, this game will really test the team's late game poise, and FT shooting will be huge. Road game.

If we could win a close one here, then anything's possible going forward.

Any word on Biruta's knee? He seemed to be getting into a groove and it would be a shame if a balky knee limited his availability.

Reading their thread where they stack themselves against the A10. They are delusional. Saying Rhody is fat on bottom feeders?

Gw, VCU then we played Bonnies, UMASS, and Lasalle, which the 3 of them are tied with Richmond.

Richmond in my opinion isn't very good. I expect to win. Yes Xavier shutdown Anthony last year but some of that could be the keaneyblue and dan hurley has the play book.

Yes, we beat them from the get-go at Ryan and led by 28 points at one point. Anthony was 2-20 on FG, 1-7 on threes. He had eight points. 0 assists and 4 TO's.

The job X did on Anthony last year was epic.
Not only did he hold him to 2-20 and 1-7 from 3,
Anthony didn't have one assist!
X had a huge size advantage and never let him breathe.

If EC was 100% we could put him against Anthony. With his foot though, EC won't have the quickness so Jarvis is going to have to get it done. Big game, can't wait.

Why not Terrell? EC never guarded anyone's high scorer, even when he
was healthy.
He's just not in Terrell or Garrett's class as a defender.

This is true. But JT might be a step slower. But, yeah, JT can surely do his part on defense and then some. Not sure he can take a point on defense just yet.

My personal preference is to have height on Anthony so he cant get a clear shot. If he drives, Hassy the Great swats his shot. Thats my plan. I will tweet it to the team now.

It's very annoying to go on their message board and read the very little respect they are giving us. Some are predicting a double digit win. In my old days I would cause havoc on their board, but I'm older and less firery than my 1997-99 days. But im tempted to say something.. I just hope we shut their mouths with a win.

Go Rhody.

We need to avoid a bad start in this game and Richmond building a big lead because our poor three point shooting hinders us from coming back from a big deficit.

Yes, I didn't get fired and ended up getting promoted twice and moved from Jersey to So. Cal, now 12 years in Austin,TX... I was a pee on back then and they busted me for swearing on the GW message board... In hindsight, it's actually pretty funny.

Got a battle brewing on the Richmond Board, it's about to get fun... Now if we get blown out, I'm going back into hiding... :D

The only result today that would surprise me is if we win by double digits. I've seen a few Richmond games this year and they are very tough in their building. We're a team who struggles on the road and although the matchups may favor us in certain positions, I see this as a tough spot for Rhody especially with a capacity crowd at the Robbins Center. Dan's had a week to prepare for this game, it will be very interesting to see the game plan he has for the Spiders.

88, I feel the same way. Just being realistic here. This is a road game in a tough environment.

The only way I see us winning is if we can jump on them early and not let up. That's hard to do, when we are prone to scoring droughts.

If we find ourselves in an even game with a few minutes to go, maybe we can pull it out. That's something that we are starting to learn to do, finally. That gives me hope that maybe we can win today.

In any event, we will need EC and Gil at close to 100% to pull this off. We need more scoring options besides Terrell and Hassan. This will be a tough game for Jarvis, if he can somehow contain Anthony and score a few himself, that's another key.

I see this as an L, by about 5 points. Prove me wrong please. Beating GW at home in a close game was a big step for us. Winning this game would be another one, which we need to do, to be seen as a real threat to win this conference.

Agree, good post. Dan having a week to prepare will be interesting and also beneficial. Also a week to heal. URI is now also a targeted team, especially now they have a chance to go into a 1st place tie. They are now the hunted, no longer the hunter. We will see every opponents best from here on out, just another challenge and hurdle for a young team. One thing we know for certain, this team will give it their all, their best effort.

Iggy, I'm glad you're confident, but I'm not there just yet.

Win today, and things change. A lot.

This Wednesday's game isn't a cakewalk by any means. If we could kidnap [just kidding] Bembry, then it would be, but any game at Hagan is a horror show for us. That's something else we need to change.

I would take 1-1. Really.
