Re: '14 MA SG Jared Terrell
What a shell game recruiting is.
Just misdirection, deceit, and manipulation.
AAU coaches playing all angles.
Guys trying to do it on the up and up, losing out to slicksters.
Recruiting "gurus" and services with bad information.
The great Bob Cousy got out of college coaching, because he couldn't stand
kissing 18 year old kid's behinds anymore.
Yet, we follow along, as if it's life and death, year after year.
Makes you wonder......

with all that talk about them playing together...i haven't seen anyone raise the point that if Abu goes to Prov, Terrell would come here to be close.
Playing would be better for him at Rhody, he's probably a starter out the gates - and he's close to his buddy.

Saturday's decision is going to be a big advertisement for Expressions Elite, both Terrell and Abu are very loyal to Expressions Elite. The more mystery surrounding their decisions, the more interest in the announcement.

It's a huge drop from Terrell to Plan B. Hurley has to get this done.

Iggy. what is "plan B'?
The Newberry kid isn't mentioning us at all.
He was likely the best of the rest,
and nobody in the 2014 offers is very exciting to
think of as X's replacement.
Also, not seeing a frontrunner on the stretch 4

Oh My God, the sky is falling!!!
Seriously, why the crazy attitude? If anyone has proven he could pull a rabbit out of their hat, it's Hurley, Murphy, and the rest of the staff.
One year ago at this time, Hurley and his staff barely knew who Terrell was (outside of a good recruit on a good Expressions team). Fast forward, and win or lose, the ground they covered, how far they came, it's an impressive showing.
I'm sure Hurley and his staff can come up with suitable Plan B's (there are many in this area) that they can put a lot of effort into and swing to Kingston. Maybe the reason they aren't leading or near the top with some guys is the amount of effort they have put into Terrell. I'm sure they will land two talented players, and even if they aren't Top 100, good quality men who will work perfectly in the Hurley system.

The obviously knew Terrell the player, Hurley got to know Terrell the man, he's the one who really sold the school, the direction of the program. You can tell by Terrell's quotes that he idolizes Hurley and what he will do at URI.
Even if he commits elsewhere, it's still an impressive run not many people expected 6 months or so ago. You can't win every recruit, but you can just see that it's not like Hurley is going to be stuck with borderline 2-star players. He will get talented players, I'm confident of that.

STOP!
Don't come one here and try to tell me of the inner working of the
URI basketball program!
EC Matthews, Jordan Hare, Mike Powell , TJ Buchanan, ALL Preston Murphy's heavy lifting.
Ditto with Terrell.
So, you know Terrell wasn't interested? Tell us all what and how you can make that statement?
Yes, Dan Hurley is our head coach and seals the deals, but it's PMurph who
has his boots on the ground, in Memphis, Chicago, Detroit, and elsewhere.
It was Preston who went to Detroit numerous times, after his verbal, to
help ease matters, when EC was taking flack for choosing URI.
Things you do not know. Period.

What I do know is that it's a great barometer on college basketball in the state of rhode island that PC AND URI are going at (competing with, and getting) the top players in the country with the top schools in the country.
thankfully we have that new SADC to sell people on because tootell east certainly wasn't going to do it any more.

Re: '14 MA SG Jared Terrell
Regardless of who was recruiting who first, I have a few thoughts on the Jared situation that I want to put out there before everything goes down.
First, I wouldn't sell Hurley and Staff short. They stillhave a shot here. Second, they very well may not get him. It happens. If you recruits guys that lots of people want then sometimes you don't get the guy. Happens to every school in the country. Third, if they do not get, they will move onto the next target. There are a lot of high school players out there. The staff will ID someone they think can fit in their system and go after him. This will be a good fit for someone, and there are 4 good recruiters on this staff.
Here's hoping that Jared is the next big thing at Rhody. It seems like we would be a great fit for him and he would be perfect for what we need. But if it doesn't work out then wish him the best and trust the staff that they will get the best player that will come here.

Adding on to that - I feel like people are forgetting who Dan is as a coach....possibly one of the best player development guys out there. We don't need only top 50 guys to compete against the best schools - our players are going to get better when they come here, as opposed to the past.TruePoint wrote:Regardless of who was recruiting who first, I have a few thoughts on the Jared situation that I want to put out there before everything goes down.

I feel like we're all just recovering from a very abusive fan/coach relationship and we're still gun-shy about what incoming talent means. We had some highly touted guys that came in under mustache man that went nowhere, and we saw what Hurley did with seniors who had never been coached last year. Have some faith people, holy christ.

Blue: I have faith, but it's a lot easier to compete against teams with top 100 players when you have a few of them, and when a top 100 player narrows it down to you and one other school ... you gotta get that kid.

Funny you say that, Blue Man.
District Baller was saying today, that VCU is being deluged with visits from top 150 players.
He pointed out, that Shaka Smart made his name by coaching two and three star players to the Final Four,
because SHAKA SMART CAN COACH!
Dan Hurley can coach, and develop players. While it's nice to get these glitzy recruits,
he can make do with others.
When he establishes the program as a winner, then, like VCU, the four star guys will be coming here.

Re: '14 MA SG Jared Terrell
Ok. So you've established that it is better to have better players. I don't think anyone is arguing that, or that the "next guy" might not be as highly regarded as Jared. We obviously want Jared. He is our primary target. But each guy can only go to one school. Like I said, if you go after elite players you face a lot of competition and you don't get every guy. They know that when they start recruiting these guys - it isn't guaranteed to pay off. What is the alternative, though? So I'm not sure what your point is.Iggy1979 wrote:TP: That's all fine and good, but my point is that while they probably will find someone who is a "good fit," he won't be a 4-star top 75 player.

You don't get 100% of the players you didn't
recruit.
Sure, they've kind of put all their eggs in one basket, but if
the get the player, it would have been worth it.
Sometimes, you have to say,"To hell with it!" and go balls to the wall
for what you want.
My asking about a backup plan wasn't doubting our staff.
It's looking at the hard realities of college basketball recruiting.

Re: '14 MA SG Jared Terrell
Getting Terrell would give us two legitimate 4 star guards, two very talented and apparently hard working guys who want to get better. Who likes to play with two hard working, very talented 4 star guards?....talented and hard working 4 star forwards and centers. So, besides the obvious fact that Jared immediately makes us a better team, he and EC will help attract the talented big guys we need to make this a powerhouse program....a domino effect, you might say. That's how important it is we get Jared to keep the ball rolling to where we want to be.

Murphy is one the top assistants in the game today, the fact that he was able to get a top 100 player like Hare to come with Baron as the coach is remarkable. You can be sure other coaches were probably in his ear telling him Baron was on his way out also. Hurley was very smart to have his assistants taken care of in that extension he just signed will it be enough I don't know I am sure Murphy is going to start getting a lot better offers soon. i know he turned down South Florida but not really means much since I believe Stan Heath is on thin ice there. If He and Hurley were to stay together for any length of time they will get top recruits.rodfromcranston wrote:STOP!

Period.

Big 12 schools don't care about basketball. Except Kansas, obviously. But have you seen Kansas play football?

That's my point. He'd be much more appreciated here. Even though the RC has been a morgue lately, with Jared and EC plus those who follow, the place will be nuts again!
