I should hope that's true, Gonzo. I think payment (or first half payment) is due Sept 15.

The non-conference for last season was announced on September 5th. It was released on September 6th the year before with Baron. It is therefore not really unusual that the school has not yet officially released the schedule as of 08-29. What is unusual is that most all the opponents are not unofficially known by now. This year is unlike other seasons as URI had fewer ongoing contracts that required another game. Furthermore, the move of Bobby Hurley to Buffalo, was likley not helpful as he was the point on scheduling. The fact that URI is coming off two straight 20+ loss seasons doesn't help matters with scheduling. While URI may be vastly improved (the extent of which is still just speculation) this coming season, the bad perception of the previous years lingers.

Also impatient, but don't you think the preseason NIT should have their games/schedule finished by now?!

My fear is that Rhody will be so desperate for games that it might have to lower itself and accept games and terms it ordinarily wouldn't. Would not be surprised to see lower level midmajors get a return game for a visit to the RC.

Re: Rams 2013-2014 Schedule
St. Joe’s has just announced their 2013-14 OOC schedule - 7 home games, 3 neutral site games, 4 away games, two of which will be played in Philly. On close analysis, it appears to be one of the better schedules in A-10. They got Creighton to come to Hagan and play only one dog in Binghamton. And they play in the Old Spice Classic which has an attractive field. Like URI, St. Joe’s also got a boost in team bonding via a ten day Italian tour where they went 4-0.
Will the Hawks be able to reverse last year when their very high pre-season expectations went unfulfilled??

Their schedule is helped a bit by Big 5 play- those games are always fun to watch.Obadiah wrote:St. Joe’s has just announced their 2013-14 OOC schedule - 7 home games, 3 neutral site games, 4 away games, two of which will be played in Philly. Re: Rams 2013-2014 Schedule
Last year, URI was consistently among the top A-10 in terms of SOS ranking. From what we already know, this year's schedule will be ranked in the low part of middle of the pack. If the URI opponents yet to be identified have ratings similar to Fairleigh Dickinson, then the URI SOS ranking will fall to the lower third of the A-10.

Re: Rams 2013-2014 Schedule
Simple solution to the problem:
WIN those games.
We won't have much wiggle room for bad losses with this schedule.
WIN in the OOC. Then do something Baron's teams never did: WIN in conference, especially in February.
2014-15's OOC schedule will be better.
See? Problem solved!

Re: Rams 2013-2014 Schedule
I think we are getting carried away with the SOS (myself included).
*Ramble Alert*
We all love DH, perhaps we should give him a little benefit of the doubt. While I agree it was probably tough getting teams to come to the RC this season because we are a scary road game for top 25ish schools looking to avoid a loss, maybe this is more part of a "Big Picture" plan by DH.
We have 1 senior - tons of young, unpolished talent. Perhaps Dan wants to teach these guys how to win, and to get used to winning. If we go into the A10 games with only 1 or 2 losses and a winning culture around here that could go a long way. Having a group of young guys who will all be back next season - all with a winning attitude, coming off a successful season could really benefit us next season (when we can amp up the SOS to solidify our tournament aspirations - I believe anything less then being 1 of 65 next season will be disappointing).
If our schedule helps us win 20+ games this season, so be it - there are certainly worse things that could happen to our program. If we find a way to sneak in this season I'll be ecstatic - you never know. While SOS is certainly important to the committee - you first need enough wins to even get into the conversation.

Re: Rams 2013-2014 Schedule
This is one season where 20 wins will not draw any of the ire of the real fans.
This is a total rebuild. A young team. And again...I'm sure Dan is saying the same thing: SOS doesn't matter if you win. Just win. That's all that matters. We play in a good enough conference where we're not going to become Wagner from 2 years ago.
Win all the games you should, lose none of the games you shouldn't, steal one or two big wins and bingo bango you're an NCAA team. We've just never had that happen.

Re: Rams 2013-2014 Schedule
Er, really? I'm not sure how much worse it could have been, short of a non-basketball issue, like with Baylor or St. Bonaventure in the past. Hurley took over a team that won single digit games, that lost its best freshman and big man because of an off-the-court issue, one of its better guards because he was the son of the old coach, and the best player his first year was someone he brought in as a junior college transfer, not someone already on the roster.Rhodymob05 wrote:I don't think its a TOTAL rebuild

It's a total rebuild. Only 2 players remain from the Baron error as URI heads into year 2 of the Hurley era.

Re: Rams 2013-2014 Schedule
NJ,each year URI should have a goal of playing a BCS school or other top team at a neutral site. BCS schools don’t want to come to Ryan and playing them in a buy game/one shot deal is always at their place and a likely loss. Playing them at a neutral site gives URI a shot at a win, which is why early season tourneys are so important. As of now, URI has no scheduled neutral site games and is the lone A-10 school in this situation. This may change when the NIT pairings are announced. All the top schools in A-10 have many neutral site games – six games for UMass, five games for VCU.
Another scheduling goal should be to minimize the number of away games where the shot of losing increases no matter the level of competition. URI already has six away games on the schedule and only Fordham in the A-10 has as many away games. VCU and UMass are playing only three true away games.
I don't see URI going into the A-10 schedule with 1 or 2 losses. Playing several high ranked OOC teams on the road and one at home will make that goal difficult.

Obadiah, in a general sense, I agree with you. Next year, I think your frustration will be warranted if there is a similar schedule. But this year, for a variety of reasons both competitive and practical, this is the schedule we have and I'm not losing sleep over it.

If we have a weak OOC schedule and end up with a record of something like 21-8, I think we'll all be pretty happy.

Sorry if someone already mentioned this, but the second part of the preseason nit, if you don't go to the garden is on Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving. More chance (especially Monday) of getting some people in the seats. Anyway, I'd would really like to go to NYC instead. Go Rams!

Re: Rams 2013-2014 Schedule
If URI was to get to the finals of the preseason NIT they would play on Friday, November 29th in New York and then the very next night at George Mason.
I am a bit surprised that they'd schedule that game the 30th given the possibility of playing 2 games in two nights in two different cities.

Anyone know why Hurley dropped RIC as an exh game. Not a big deal but I thought it was a better game, for the team and the fans, than last year's CGA and this year's Southern Conn.

I don't know that it was URI that dropped this exhibition. Reading between the lines, I got the feeling that Bob Walsh and RIC made the decision that they would rather play PC. Perhaps they get a bigger paycheck. Maybe RIC will intermittently play both going forward.

Eh, it's exhibition season basketball though. Syracuse lost to a Division II team a few years ago, I think. Whoever the Rams' 12th man will be this year will probably get 10+ minutes a game in URI's exhibitions.Bos8 wrote:Ric was up 1 at PC at halftime last year.

Obviously I wasn't implying anything at all, but it was mentioned that RIC was better competition then most options. The RIC game provided us with decent tune up competition, a well coached team that executes, and arguably most important, a decent crowd for an exhibition game.
