I think nba style baskets have vacuums under the rims that are turned on for the home team and operate in reverse for opponents

Rod is a great poster, but his bedside manner leaves something to be desired.

I looked at pictures of NBA basket supports and of the support in the Ryan last year, and I couldn't tell the difference with the naked eye (I can post the images I looked at tonight when I get home). I will be interested to hear the explanation of how they are different.

i believe the difference would be the shot clocks (2 shot clocks: 1 facing the endzones on top of the backboard, 1 facing the sidelines that is further back from the backboard). I believe the hoops last year in the NBA also had a small (3' x 1') LED on the arm. I don't know if this what they meant or if these are what we already have

the support may also be different but I doubt it will be a drastic change from what we had

Ryan Center has had that new two shot clock configuration for maybe 4 seasons now, if I remember correctly. The LED bar on the arm may be for a visible shot clock expiry indication that doesn't conflict with the game time "wrap around" LED bar that encircles the full backboard and illuminates during subs and when the game time buzzer sounds.

Is the "upgrade" really about advertising? If it is, it seems weird to describe it as an "NBA style" basket rather than a basket "better at advertising." I'm not buying that as the upgrade. It makes no sense, and I wouldn't really call that a program improvement.

My guess is that an NBA style basket would allow you to hang on the rim and do chin ups after a dunk.......that's what all the NBA players do....

Yes, if that's the change, it's just a marketing point to
sell to sponsors.
Of course, the more dollars produced by the operation, the bettr off the
program is, overall.

I'll admit I don't know what is NBA-style about the baskets, but what we had last season was already one of the top styles of hoops in D1 basketball.

Can't hurt to have NBA-quality equipment as this is yet another item that recruits would notice and identify as a sign of a top flight program.

I don't like the RI, even thought we are the Univ. of RI, putting RI there kind of denotes that the State of RI supports the University, I like the current huge Ram horns in the Center, it is over 10 years old, but still great.

I once liked the Ram head logo on the floor at the Ryan Center. In fact, I thought we had one of the best looking floors back in 2002. However, if our collective goal is to bring our favorite hoop program to new heights and sustain it in this highly competitive environment, we need to maximize our brand image. One of the best, if not the best, ways to reinforce the brand of Rhode Island Basketball is to have an easily recognizable, non-ambiguous logo in the center of your court.

It's one thing to be one of 4 D1 programs with Rams as their mascot, but when 2 of those other teams are in your very own conference, you need to ensure instant brand recognition with a differentiated, unique logo.

VCU, a program we can aspire to match, made the change a year or two ago when they removed their generic ram head logo and replaced it with their VCU styled text mark.

URI will have more and more televised games (outside of the local Cox productions) and therefore the game presentation as it comes through to the TV viewer is of heightened importance.

So put me down as supporting the transition to "RI" for the primary logo for URI Athletics.

I'm with ATP. I think/thought our ram head logo was one of the best logos in all of sports, but from a marketing/branding perspective the RI is better.

One thing I will say, and I'm apparently in disagreement with rhodymob on this, is that whatever logo we want to go with we need to pick something and stay with it. Preferably forever. A logo should not be something that changes every few years. We should have a logo that Ted Williams will recognize when he wakes up in the year 2372.

I just created this one on my computer. Personally, I like it better than some of the other ones I've seen and not just because I made it. It wouldn't surprise me if someone else has done something similar before since URI only has so many colors in it's color scheme.

I agree that the logo should stick and stay forever, a quick polishing of the current ri logo would be great. My dad has a hat from the 90s I believe and its a fantastic "rams" logo. Great colors too. Its blue white and black. Whish that stuck

I'm guessing if you took a vote between the cartoon lion vs. the real Rhody mascot,
the latter would win 99% to 1%.
Same with the old Ramettes vs. the modern dance routine Ramettes.
