Today's preview is for the defensive line:

I kind of stopped following the transfer portal, I didn't know that three of our guys on the line ended up in FBS

There was an issue with last Dline coach. He's gone too.
The transfers were good players who helped. Not irreplaceable. They got a transfer from FAU. Some of the kids coming up are huge.Could be effective if they rotate them.
Really like the kid from NFA. He's huge, has bounce, looked good in Brown game. Its a position group where one can improve a lot in offseason.

Quarterbacks

KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island got a bit of a surprise in the spring when it learned that three-year starter Kasim Hill had been granted one more season of eligibility for 2023.

One of the most prolific signal callers in program history, the Washington, D.C. native ranks third on URI's all-time list in passing yards (5,156) and touchdown passes (39), ninth in rushing touchdowns (15) and fifth in pass completions (363). He has led the Rams to three straight winning seasons and is one of the top offensive players at the FCS level.

Suffice to say, Hill returning for a fourth year makes the Rhode Island offense that averaged 30.64 points per game in 2022 one of the most dynamic in the country.

Behind Hill, Rhode Island returns its top two reserves from a year ago in Kennique Bonner-Steward (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Trevor Nored (Waldorf, Md.). Bonner-Stewart, a redshirt junior, appeared in four games last season as a reserve. With Hill sitting out of the Blue-White Game in the spring, Bonner-Steward opened with the first unit and performed well. He was 13-for-23 for 202 yards, one touchdown and one pick. Nored, a redshirt freshman, has impressed the coaching staff since he arrived on campus, working his way up the depth chart last season.

Virginia Tech transfer Devin Farrell (Stockbridge, Ga.) joined the team in the offseason after redshirting as a true freshman with the Hokies. A three-star, dual-threat quarterback out of Milton High School, Farrell passed for 1,983 yards and 24 touchdowns while also rushing for 875 yards and 10 scores his senior season.

Rhode Island also has true freshman Conner Kenyon (Austin, Texas) coming in. A spring signee, he passed for 4,068 yards and 43 touchdowns over 23 high school starts.

We were picked to finish sixth in the league's preseason poll. Redshirt senior offensive lineman Nick Correia made the preseason all conference team. Redshirt senior quarterback Kasim Hill, redshirt senior offensive lineman Lorenzo Thompson, graduate wide receiver Kahtero Summers, and senior linebacker Evan Stewart all made the honorable mention list

It'll be interesting to see if Kasim can get any better. He's basically been the same player since Maryland. If he elevates his game I think we make the playoffs pretty easily.

But that same player last year has made us consistent, which for our program, is extremely rare. Consistency is something rare for our program. In 2021 he was a bit up and down, but was much more consistent last season. If he can deliver consistently for us, it will allow the increased talent around us to hopefully elevate us to the playoffs.

Hill will have to play better to make the playoffs.
For an FBS starter, his passing % is waaay off the other CAA QBs who made the playoffs?
He should be toying with people. Lot of weapons around him last season.

Eckhaus,Zevi 22 37 271 3 0 27 10

Muskett,Tony 18 29 249 3 1 47 4

Even some (all?) of the less experienced QBS threw for higher % s .
In fairness to Hill,he was not throwing against the Rams dysfunctional secondary. Of course their % would be higher vs. URIs DB's last year.

Stats don't really support your argument against URI's pass coverage

Apparently you can get in the playoffs by throwing 56% with 27 INTs.

"Apparently you can get in the playoffs by throwing 56% with 27 INTs."

FmrRam-yes-there are exceptional outliers. The above stats are per CAA. It shows the Rams 3rd from the bottom in passing?
The statement was made by others (on and off board) that a team is not typically going to make the playoffs at 53%. The Rams unfortunately are one of those teams. I don't put it all on Hill -here's why:
A. What if the TE didn't have multiple drops thru the season (in his hands) and actually made some blocks? I can't imagine this years TE's not being an upgrade.
B. What is the kickers could have actually made a couple? Again, its hard to see it not improving.

Hill was out there with 9 guys last season.

Please qualify-Who is the team that made the playoffs with 56% & 27 interceptions? What conference do they play in? How many teams in the league and how many made the playoffs ?

Caleb Warren caught 23 passes, 3rd on the team. You're saying a TE this year will catch more?

I too don't get the disdain for Warren. If anything he should have been a bigger focal point of the offense. He made several big catches and I don't recall a bunch of drops. I remember screaming at the TV to throw the ball to him more not less over the last 2 years. TE is such an imp position in modern football.
