Take a read of this linked article about the situation at UMass. It concerns the Mitchell recruiting with Bergeron and current request for transfer. It also includes something about why Pat Kelsey left Umass at the altar after initially accepting their offer of the head coaching job a few years ago. It lists the reason as being that "two UMass players had asked Kelsey if they’d be getting the same financial arrangement they had with deposed coach Derek Kellogg. Those two players are still in the game and playing for a team that’s in the NCAA title hunt." This would seem to point to DeJon Jarreau and Brison Gresham as they play for Houston.

There goes the Woodstock pipeline.

This is an excerpt:

Bergeron, a Springfield native, is so close to Mitchell that he is engaged to the player’s mother, Erin Tortorice, and lives with them in his home near Amherst. If anyone could have kept Mitchell at UMass, it would seem to have been Bergeron.

The fact that Mitchell entered the NCAA’s transfer portal and is all but certain to depart drastically depreciated Bergeron’s value in Amherst. His contract called for him to earn $232,000 next season, beginning April 11, plus a $6,000 car allowance, six season tickets to home games, and $5,500 in possible incentives tied to the team’s success. He also received a $10,000 signing bonus.

But Bamford apparently had seen enough. Under Bergeron’s contract, UMass is required to pay 25 percent of his base salary, or $58,000, to buy out the final year of his contract.

$232k for an assistant in the Atlantic 10? Wonder how much of that was being funneled to Mitchell ...

If he lives with him and his mother, obviously he’d be providing for the kid with his salary.

Porter Moser’s rise has been so improbable considering he didn’t make the tournament in his first two head coaching stops and his first 13 years overall as a head coach.

Your numbers are a bit off. He was head coach at Arkansas Little Rock and Illinois State before Loyala. ALR from 2000-2003 and Illinois State 2003-2007. Lower tier teams to get your groove. He took over Loyala in 2011. Made the Final 4 in 2018 and the Sweet 16 this year thus far. This is how coaches need to progress. Do well at lower tier schools and move up.

Porter Moser credits much of his success from his time as an assistant to Rick Majerus at SLU, after being let go by Illinois State.

See below:

"Moser worked as an assistant coach at SLU from 2007-08 and was promoted to associate head coach from 2008-11. He said he cherished his time at SLU and learned strategies from Majerus’ coaching style.

“To get an opportunity to work with a guy like [Majerus], for someone who values … learning in the profession, it was unbelievable,” Moser said. “He had a genius type of mind … the game slowed down in his mind, and he really saw things [in slow motion]. On his preparation for the game … I’ve never seen anything like it. It was just such a huge influence, on my life, preparing game plans for games.”

Moser said Majerus taught him how to pay closer attention to detail. Moser stops practice often to make sure the players know what they’re doing wrong on a certain play, no matter how small the error, and the players carry that knowledge with them after graduation.

Majerus also taught Moser how to develop a program. Since Loyola is a mid-major program, it’s hard for coaches to land nationally-ranked recruits. To make up for that, coaches such as Moser use the four years with each player to develop them — something he learned from Majerus.

“I learned so much [from] him about teaching and development,” Moser said. “We, at Loyola, have to be a program of development. We’re not going to sign McDonald’s All-Americans [and] we’re not going to sign one-and-dones. We’ve got to pride ourselves on development and the little things of the game. Coach Majerus had a great line: ‘It’s more important for me to teach you how to play than to teach you plays.”

I went to the MA payroll website. They have McCall getting a base salary of 250,000, Bergeron having a base salary of $232,000, and Wheeler and their other assistant down around $115,000 and we're not supposed to think something fishy was going on there even ignoring the whole Bergeron sleeping with Mitchell's mom thing?

Haha, you'd think UMass would not make it so obvious that Mitchell's mom was effectively a +1 on the payroll. They made Bergeron's salary only a $2k difference from $115k x 2! I don't know if the NCAA will investigate for a possible violation, or just not bother wasting the resources seeing as what did UMass even gain from it? A great player but still a mediocre W/L record.

I mean, Andy Enfield hired Evan and Isaiah Mobely's dad as an assistant coach just to guarantee those 2 5* kids went to USC. Everyone knows why he was hired, but it's entirely within the rules and not an impermissible benefit.

Luke Murray has an excellent reputation as a recruiter, I believe he was or is on Fordham list for head coaches- grab him as an assistant , if we can,
Besides recruiting he was working with players as a perimeter coach- certainly something we can use. Ed note. Who is our current perimeter coach ?..🤭

you can bet that DH kuldip take him to UConn if he has the space.

Wouldn't be surprised if Turgeon does leave, has been rumored for awhile, there always seemed to be some friction with him at Maryland.

Tell Fordham that. They have had their position open since they fired Neubauer back on January 25th. There is speculation by Fordham fans that the school has reached an agreement with Villanova assistant Kyle Neptune but is putting off an official announcement until the Wildcats are eliminated in the tournament. Would imagine no coach in place hurts in the high number current transfers market.

I’d also take someone who was good but not great at the next level. Say Shaka or Brad Stevens gets canned next year. Sign me up in a second.
Ayyy now Shaka could maybe happen for sure! I here he is experienced with Rams.
Shaka Smart has Texas NET 24 and a 4-seed in CBS Jerry Palm Bracketology. Not soon to lose his job.

Texas currently Ranked #14 in AP Poll
(Yeah, Brad Stevens was a super stretch, but still)

My apologies

That loss to 14-seed Abilene Christian was devastating for Texas supporters.

The only way that really makes sense is if Texas told him he should look elsewhere, right? Marquette is a big step down
Take down the Robert Carothers banner and fix the concession stand lines

Wouldn't be surprised if that is how it played out. Texas has higher expectations every year than just getting to the "Dance", Shaka needed to win some games in the NCAAT.

It wouldn't surprise me if both parties wanted to move on. Smart to Marquette seems like a good move for him - less pressure than Texas, which is a huge payday, but it also seems to come with a bunch of bullshit attached too.
