Who’ Available- Who do we want (To replace DC)?
PERHAPS Pre-Mature , Many hope not !,
Wondering about Bobby Hurley. Having a terrible season , Probably on chopping block for ASU.
maybe he wants to come back East with family getting older ??

Re: Who’ Available- Who do we want (To replace DC)?
Don’t think he would want to coach here and be reminded and compared to his brother every day.
And he’s not going anywhere at all, would have been 3 straight NCAAs for him last year if it didn’t get cancelled.
And Cox isn’t going anywhere for at least a year.
So yes, this thread is way way too premature.

We messed up passing on Pitino.
My top choice would be John Becker. A fantastic coach that deserves a bigger opportunity.

Why would Bobby go down a level?
Not happening.
Pitino isn't walking thru that door either, unless you have 10 million for his buyout.

We’ll probably get called PC fans because we both have rational thoughts on this! Rational and logical takes aren’t allowed here, only thoughts allowed are those with Keaney Blue blinders on.

Fired after one bad year after two straight, and an assumed third straight, NCAA birth?

Re: Who’ Available- Who do we want (To replace DC)?
Becker is an interesting one. I think he’s one of the better in game coaches out there. I know he flirted with Duquesne a few years back, but have to believe that he’s been approached about bigger jobs since then. Seems like he’s just happy where he is. They pay him decently well for that level. Pretty sure he’s in the $350k range.steveystuds06 wrote: ↑3 years ago We messed up passing on Pitino.

Grasso's first winning season at Bryant is this season, his third. If he does it again next year, and we're looking to replace Cox, maybe I'd be more interested. But I kind of doubt we'd normally give a shit about Grasso, except that he happens to be coaching a school in Rhode Island.

Re: Who’ Available- Who do we want (To replace DC)?
Bryant was 3-28 the year before Grasso came on. To get them to 15 wins in his second season and now in 1st place in his 3rd is a big accomplishment, in my opinion. Cox has us going backward. I want to see a coach that gets better and better each season, and that's exactly what Grasso has done.SGreenwell wrote: ↑3 years ago Grasso's first winning season at Bryant is this season, his third. Re: Who’ Available- Who do we want (To replace DC)?
This is what I posted before we hired Cox:
"Top of the list:
David Cox: risky because he's never been a head coach, highest short term reward because he's most likely to keep the whole roster together. His experience says he's due for a head coach position.
Preston Murphy: risky because he's never been a head coach, highest long term reward because if anyone is going to view URI as a destination and not a stepping stone, it's him. Preston was exactly where David Cox is now a few years ago. Would have current members of the senior class able to vouch for him to the younger guys. Has a son already offered by Buffalo, so that could be a nice bonus if he ends up being an A10 level player who wants to play for his dad.
Nate Oats: Successful at Buffalo. EC could vouch for him. Not worried about his buyout, that's why you had a buyout in Dan's contract, just roll over UConn's cash to Buffalo. Probably already out of the running though unless things don't work out with Pitt.
Your next coach is almost definitely one of those three.
Other intriguing names:
Dane Fife: currently an assistant at Michigan State, has been there since 2011. Was linked to the Duquesne job last off-season. Previously the head coach at IPFW for six years, his teams got better every year. Downside is he's been strictly Midwest his whole life.
Patrick Beilein: John's son. His last two years he's earned number one seeds in the Division 2 tournament
Micah Shrewsbury: assistant to Brad Stevens at Butler and now with the Celtics
Name I'm worried about: Derek Kellogg: previous relationship with Thorr, had a make good year at LIU. I could see him getting an interview to help him out. Hopefully that's all it is, because he wasn't good at UMass.
Name I'm all the way out on: Cluess"
Oats is obviously off the table. Can't imagine Preston would be a serious candidate now. Patrick Beilein was hired by Niagara the offseason after Cox but never coached a game there, stepping down before the season started for personal reasons. It doesn't seem like he's in coaching at this point. Dane Fife is still an assistant at Michigan State. Micah Shrewsbury is currently the associate head coach at Purdue.
I think Fife and Shrewsbury are still intriguing options. Jared Grasso would definitely be worthy of a look, but I would have serious concerns if his style of play is like Tim Cluess'. There will obviously be noise about Rick Pitino, but I think that would be a huge mistake. Yeah, he's a proven winner, but he's also proven to be dirty as hell and a complete scumbag. We won't come out unscathed the way Louisville did. John Becker has been successful at Vermont. Bill Coen has been ok at Northeastern and has familiarity with the school as an assistant under Al Skinner. If you're not totally scarred by someone with no head coaching experience Antonio Reynolds Dean could be an option but you'd need a strong, experienced hand on his staff. Another intriguing name is Joe Mazzulla. Rhode Island native, was the head coach at Division 2 Fairmont State, going 35-9 in conference, making the Division 2 tournament one of the two years. He's been an assistant on the Celtics staff since 2019

This is very premature, no way do I think they fire Cox this year.
But in the the event it happens down the road, I will play along.
Matta - No, he will stay in the Midwest, probably back to Butler some time
John Beilien- At 68 not sure he would return to college coaching and doubtful it would be here
Bruce Pearl- Went to the final 4 in 2019, not going anywhere for now.
Grasso - No thanks
My favorite/top candidate would be John Becker
Current assistants that may be good head coaches in the future: Kyle Neptune, Brandin Knight, Luke Murray
I think any program in the Northeast looking for assistants should have Preston Murphy and Jim Christian on their short list, that should include us.

NO to hiring anyone with no HC experience.
And another big NO to anyone with a mediocre record.
I could see Preston as our top assistant sometime. He's not getting a HC gig for a while, if ever.
If Dooley weren't retiring, he wouldn't hire him though.
105, you beat me to it.

They won’t fire Cox now because of the money, pretty obvious to see.
So you’re just gonna throw out 3 ridiculous big time names we have 0 chance at getting, and say “big pass” to Becker who has won every season at Vermont?
Any reason why? Or do you expect to get the cream of the crop, big name coaches?
Bruce Pearl went to the FINAL FOUR two years ago in the SEC, and you actually put that as a name to go after.
Talk about unrealistic expectations.

Not sure if Becker applied when we hired Cox.
I think he had interest, though.
I think when the time comes, he'll be considered if he's interested. Vermont has generally punched above their weight since he's been their coach.
He's a guy that we wouldn't have to break the bank to get, but we would have to pay him and his staff more than this staff, for sure.
And I have to say this, I would LOVE to finally get a good X and O's coach in here!

Any reason why? Or do you expect to get the cream of the crop, big name coaches?
Bruce Pearl went to the FINAL FOUR two years ago in the SEC, and you actually put that as a name to go after.
Talk about unrealistic expectations.
I can't see them making a change now in this Covid year. IMO
We can all throw out out pie in the sky names, but Becker would be a good viable candidate
He isn't as sexy a name as others but is an excellent coach, has won over 20 games every year (229-95 record) at Vermont.
Also went to the NCAAT 3 times, would of been 4 if not cancelled last year.

Yeah no to Becker. You two clowns, You and 15, with your Becker. Just No. Not even happening.Jersey77 wrote: ↑3 years agoAgree with your take !5'Rhody15 wrote: ↑3 years agotheblueram wrote: ↑3 years ago
They won't fire Cox? Why not? Cause we are a sure fire lock for NCAAT next year? Yeah, not. This team is going to suck ass next year. We have seen the transfers play, hah.I don't even know if we have recruits. John Becker????? Yeah, I'll be a big pass.

Are you gonna be like Rhody72 and just throw shit against the wall with no explanation as to why?
And you act like we’re the only two people who think he would be a good coach here...
Vermont has the Conference POY for the 5th year in a row, one of only five schools to do that in history.
Guy wins all the time, and has multiple NCAAs.

Explain why no Becker.
As for paying Cox 600K, if the boosters want Cox out, they will pay the nut.
It's what they do.

Sorry 15, I have zero interest in Becker. It's not personal. Just my take.Rhody15 wrote: ↑3 years agotheblueram wrote: ↑3 years agoYeah no to Becker. You two clowns, You and 15, with your Becker. Just No. Not even happening.Jersey77 wrote: ↑3 years ago

Hell, if I won Powerball, I would call Thorr tomorrow, and tell him, if you want my LARGE donation....fire Cox today.
The practice facility would become reality right quick....and the East Stands would be no more.

As I said earlier Becker would be my top choice as well. Yes, we all would love Brad Stevens, Shaka Smart, or Bruce Pearl but that's not happening.steveystuds06 wrote: ↑3 years ago We messed up passing on Pitino.
My top choice would be John Becker. A fantastic coach that deserves a bigger opportunity.

This is a ridiculous topic. But since we are talking about it, let's try to get Coach K since Duke is having an off year.

Last time I checked, Bobby Knight doesn’t have a job.Rhody_NYCT wrote: ↑3 years ago This is a ridiculous topic. But since we are talking about it, let's try to get Coach K since Duke is having an off year.

Re: Who’ Available- Who do we want (To replace DC)?
Yes, this is ridiculous topic. A year from now, names...
Becker would be in the mix.
Bill Coen from Northeastern.
Matt Langel at Colgate has proven he has the X's and O's of coaching down.
If Pat Chambers can extricate himself from the stuff he left at Penn State, then he'll want to get back in the game. He can recruit Philly too.
Guys not walking thru that door...John Belein (he'll go big time), Slick Rick.
Old guys who have not shut the door on getting back into the game....Seth Greenberg, Fran Fraschilla.
You can forget about a guy with no head coaching experience.

Matta stepped away from coaching due to health reasons at age 50 thought he would be back by now

Yeah, as much as I want Cox gone, he'll be here another year.
Thorr's not blind though, I'm sure privately he sees the mess we're in.
He knows he will likely have to make a move after next season.

ASU is 7-8 in Conference Play. They have won 3 straight and play Washington State today, with two games remaining with Colorado and Utah.
Anything can happen in Conference Play.
I don't think he is near the chopping block and no way would he drop to A10 level for coaching. NET of 105 for ASU, PAC 12 is a strong conference with 5 teams in the Top 45 in NET
