Re: '18 NY PG - Jalen Carey (Offer)
Highlights from last season as a freshman. Low level of competition, looks like he transferred to probably get to a better league. Good looking shot and handle. Sits in passing lanes and got lots of easy steals, but like I said, low level of competition.

Well, 2018's would be the time to bring in a new PG. Jarvis will be done, and Dowtin would be a junior.

Wow, former top 50ish player. He might have 3 years left with a medical redshirt.

So, if we got both Carey and Nelson, who would be the next to decommit?

I would rather have both Berry and Leggett over either of these two guys. They get everyone’s attention because former rankings or teams they transferred from. Two overrated guys that can’t shoot in my opinion. I like some of the players we are chasing better.

This is crazy talk. What, are we going to operate with just two guards on the roster next year?
Berry and Leggett are going to be great players, but neither is a PG.
Show me a PG that we are chasing that you like better, please.
These are two high level guys. Not perfect, but is there a perfect PG that we are in the lead for?

Re: '18 NY PG - Jalen Carey (Syracuse Transfer)
Well, perhaps not "crazy" talk, per se. Maybe just a little short sighted.
Put it this way: what are the chances of Fatts returning? What are the odds of Sheppard ever playing a game in a Keaney Blue uniform (yes, I said it, but this is an attempt to see the reality here)?
Fatts may not be in the equation. And until Sheppard actually plays his first non exhibition game for us, and I would say I wouldn't even call it 100% until he plays a small handful of games and then you can say the coast is 100% clear, I'm not completely buying into that one.
That is not to disparage Sheppard, I'm sure he reads this site. But, he came from East Carolina, which is always on the NCAAs radar, he was ineligible last year, I'm sure he has done a ton of good academic work since, but this is the same NCAA that will randomly say that summer Ceramics 110 course that has always qualified for a general ed elective for the last 20 players, doesn't qualify.
I think Sheppard will give us a significant punch if he is eligible in the end, and could even be the starter for his one year here. However, if you have the opportunity to get one or both of the mentioned guards listed in this thread, you do it, no questions asked.

Re: '18 NY PG - Jalen Carey (Syracuse Transfer)
What’s crazy about it? I’m betting you have never seen Nelson or Carey play? Why do we want two point guards that can’t shoot both coming here because they are friends? They accomplished zero between them. If they want to lock down one of them that is fine, but there will be plenty of other options. I like the guys we are going after at shooting guard, but not so much at point guard. Nelson already had some disciplinary issues at Seton Hall.rhodyblue12 wrote: ↑4 years agoThis is crazy talk. Carey was the starting point guard for Syracuse for the first 2 games before he had to have surgery on his thumb last season. To me, that is an accomplishment.RamStock wrote: ↑4 years agoWhat’s crazy about it? I’m betting you have never seen Nelson or Carey play? Jalen carey also scored 26 points against dan hurley's defense at uconn last prior year. And backed that up with 16 a night later against an Oregon team that made the sweet 16 in a holiday tourney. He was a freshman. Idk how you could say you wouldn't be excited to get him just baffling.

If we can get both of them - f’in do it. Screw next year, maybe grab a grad transfer to round it out because we will still have a more than decent team. The next year would be insanity level, Mitchells, JH, Berry, Leggett, Martin and these two guys would be unreal.

2 things stopping us from getting Carey or Nelson, or both. 1. We don't know what the transfer rule is. 2. We don't know what Fatts is going to do.

Since UConn has used all their scholarships, can they add him even if he has to sit a year? I thought no.

No one is definitively saying what his list is as this point, just listing the interest he received a month ago. JUCO could also be an option.

Haven't seen any.
4 out of 7 chance of it being a Big East school. With URI, Alabama, and BYU the outliers.
Absolute coin toss. Only Jalen knows, and he probably doesn't even know at this moment.

Zags is sneaky because he won't make a prediction unless he's pretty sure, which is why his track record is so good. In any event, good news for Rhody. Fingers crossed.

Re: '18 NY PG - Jalen Carey (Syracuse Transfer)
This is why Cox has been very smart to keep Roster Spots open - for opportunities like this
Carey was ranked #38 in ESPN Class of 2018
Would be fan awesome addition to URI's Roster
Carey only played 2 games in his Sophomore Season for Syracuse when he hurt his finger. He should get that whole season back and have 3 years of eligibility. He should be able to get a waiver for last season due to injury and be eligible to play this 2020-2021 Season.

Strengths:
Carey is a highly talented young playmaking guard. He's both smooth and athletic with an extra gear to his attacking game off the bounce. He's good with the ball and a high level finisher at a young age who is bouncy, able to use both hands and even be crafty by jumping off both feet. He has a solid build, is capable of playing on or off the ball and has the tools to be a good defender down the road.
Weaknesses:
The consistency of Carey's jumper is the biggest question mark in his game right now. His mechanics aren't necessarily totally broken but there's a definite glitch in his release as the ball comes off his hand. His mindset is that of a scorer and so while he often plays with the ball in his hands, he isn't yet a distributor or someone who makes those around him better.
Bottom Line:
Carey is a high level scoring guard with great attacking tools and the potential to be an equally impactful defender down the road but he'll either need to evolve into more of a true point guard or become a more consistent shooting threat from off the ball.

That syracuse.com article mentions he's going to apply for a waiver wherever he lands. He missed basically all of last season (but was still enrolled at Cuse, obviously) so I wonder how the NCAA will handle it.

I think the NCAA gives him 3 years of eligibility due to having played only the first 2 games of last season and he gets to immediately play this coming season 2020-2021.

So he's really a 2 guard who wants the ball in his hands , not a true point who distributes the ball well but can still score.Carey is a high level scoring guard with great attacking tools and the potential to be an equally impactful defender down the road but he'll either need to evolve into more of a true point guard or become a more consistent shooting threat from off the ball.
"combo" guard. With Fatts and Sheppard both leaving he will help to solidify the back court in 21 and give ish and Tres
some help and time to develop. Wonder what they sill think of this if he signs.

Re: '18 NY PG - Jalen Carey (Syracuse Transfer)
The Syracuse board seem to think of him as a more of a scorer and not known for outside shooting. I think his value for us would be at the point, but from listening to others this might not be his strongest position. Has anyone seen him enough or know if he can stick at the point? With Fatts and Sheppard gone after this year we are very thin at the point, but already strong at the shooting guard and small forward spots when all the transfers are eligible and the two freshman

Re: '18 NY PG - Jalen Carey (Syracuse Transfer)
Best off-season coup and a pretty darn good in-season coup! This would be a fantastic pick up for David Cox. I'd guess he gets the waiver for the injury after just 2 games last season and gets to play in November this year.
In just his 3rd game as a Freshman for 15th Ranked Syracuse vs Dan Hurley's UCONN Squad, Carey started and had:
38 minutes
9-14 FG
1-4 3FG
7-8 FT
7 rebounds
0 assists
6 TOs
3 steals
26 points
In just his 4th game as a Freshman for 15th Ranked Syracuse vs 13th Ranked Oregon Carey started and had:
36 minutes
4-8 FG
1-2 3FG
5-6 FT
3 rebounds
1 assist
2 TOs
3 steals
14 points
After those 2 games Carey did not start another game the rest of the season
Being ESPN #38 Ranked and his previous levels of recruitment Carey is a perfect guy for David Cox to offer one of his remaining scholarships to imho
I really hope we land Carey tomorrow (Friday). Would make for a great weekend for URI Coaching Staff, Players and Fans.
