Game #1: Norfolk State - PreGame
Here is what ESPN had to say about Norfolk State at the start of the season. Could be two teams that are looking to find their identity early on in the season. They lost 4 of 5 starters. I am expecting a somewhat sloppy game to start. If URI brings the D, this is a team they should be able to shut down once the game gets settled. Close in first half, URI wins by 10.
Per ESPN:
BACKCOURT: B-
BENCH/DEPTH: B
FRONTCOURT: C+
INTANGIBLES: A+
Pendarvis Williams (11.9 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.5 apg) This is their only returning starter or player who managed over 20 mins a game. He is a 6'6 point guard, which could provide matchup problems.
We should be able to compete down low. They dont have much experience there either. This will be a great barometer game for Hare as Norfolk State's Freshman Rashid Gaston (6'8" ) is the highest rated recruit in school history under head coach Anthony Evans as he was ranked the #42 Big man in the country.

Re: Game #1: Norfolk State - PreGame
I think we can win this game. I like how the Hurley's were holding back on some of their offensive sets during the scrimmage and exhibition so they can be sprung upon Norfolk St and others.
Having TJ available makes me feel more confident. It just feels like one of those games we can win, not because we necessarily have the better players, but we have a coaching staff that can make the difference.
Lastly, I hope that the fans all show up on Friday to give the team every chance to win.

I agree. I think having TJ back is only good news. I honestly think that a game this early in the season with teams that have had this much roster turnover comes down to coaching.

C- for depth? Rather modest.
What we lack in depth, our guys make up for in hustle, grit and the 'Hurley Factor.' I feel good about this one.

Play intense defense, rebound the basketball defensively, take care of the basketball offensively and get consistent scoring from M&M&M (new nickname?). Those are the keys not only for this game but every game this season.

Going of course; will be interesting to see how Jordan Hare works against a D1 opponent, TJ back is good to see him and the others dig-in on defense, looking forward to see more of the offense style and sets. Hopefully the crowd will be incresing is size and getting behind our boys...........go rhody!!

Re: Game #1: Norfolk State - PreGame
My wife and I will be in attendance. Curious to see the starting five, the various rotations and their defensive mindset. With a limited bench, I can't see this team being too aggresive on the defensive end. I dobut there will be too many players pressing from 27ft out. Will they play more zone to keep players out of foul trouble? Especially, against poor outside shooting teams. As long as they play smart and good team defense, I think they can avoid the foul trouble that has plauged this team under Baron as the plan was there was no plan, playing an out of control full-court press. Then they could not play solid half-court D when the opposition broke it. I think this new sense of overall structure will keep this team in most games, but I think they're too thin this year to capitalize in wins.

Re: Game #1: Norfolk State - PreGame
Short bench or not, the defense will be aggressive. We know Powell, Munford, Malesevic, and Malone will start, but I'm very interested in seeing whether it's Hare or Aaman. I'm hopeful that it's Hare, as that will mean some of those practice things that were alluded to earlier have been resolved.

No martial arts background, just a fan of Johnny Lawrence from the Karate Kid. The true champ.
With a bench that literally goes 9 deep, unless they have walk-ons, they would play man-to-man defense even if multiple players are in serious foul trouble? I'm not saying it's not in their philosophy, but it may have to be a necessity unless they want to play with four players on the court and a chair a-la Frank Keaney.

Johnny was totally misunderstood. He just wanted to talk it out with Elisabeth Shue; and some cheese ball from Jersey horns in. Daniel kept asking for it. He had to dump water all over Johnny when he was getting high. Deserved to get his ass kicked

Can't wait to be there for this one...probably be the only noisy one in 207.
Shocked that intangibles only gets us a B - we have the disciples of one of the most holy names in college basketball actually coaching us now. Oh well, typical URI...we'll have to earn some respect.

Daniel was a punk. And, what kind of under 17 tournament only requires the defending champion (at 26 years old) only have to compete in the finals to retain his title? Good thing the A-10 doesn't have that rule...

BTW, this is only going to be the second time I've ever seen a game at the Ryan Center (1st was that USC game on opening night as well, my brother had to remind me that we actually went because I hardly remember any of it except the last shot by Hellenga, I must have been shitfaced or something, lol).

I was thankful the game was televised because without the TV coverage Rhody would have lost that game. Thr refs were able to review the last shot which I thought was a little late, but called a good three on the court.

Should be a fun atmosphere tomorrow, hopefully! I will be there live blogging - I'll share the link in this thread when I make the story on Patch, and I should be able to link back to this board from the story as well. I know Gandy and a couple others would follow along last year despite the misery, so if you can't make it to the game for some reason, feel free to use the chat in addition to the other ways you watch the game. (There is also an iPhone app for Cover It Live, if you want to follow along while you're actually at the game - You know, make it real meta.)
