Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
The prediction from the media that covers recruiting is that most of the top 200 players aren’t going to attend the four regional NCAA Development camps (July 23-28). This is the last Evaluation Period for this recruiting class. The players are being encouraged by their AAU programs/coaches to not attend. The players are planning not to go to show loyalty to their AAU coaches.
The next Recruiting Period starts Sept 9. Recruits can visit campus in August but that is very rare because the current players aren’t on campus in August. Coaches vacation time. Official Visits usually start up the first week in Sept when players get back.

Interesting this kid didn’t have any high level offers. Davidson offered him yesterday at UAA in Atlanta and he accepted today. Other offers Vermont, Elon, James Madison & BGSU?

I missed Xavier - that was over a year ago. He didn’t receive an offer from ND. Checked back over two years. He did also receive an offer from Duquesne.
Davidson has a knack for finding these unrated players who can shoot.

McKillop recruits to a system and philosophy, puts high emphasis on shooting, passing, ball skills and less so on athleticism, rebounding and measurables.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Look at Davidson’s recruiting traditionally. Aside from the occasional guy that seeks out and wants Davidson (i.e., Grady), they hardly ever recruit guys that anyone else is recruiting. Their entire classes are often made up guys who are all not even profiled or ranked by recruiting services. There is more than one way to skin a cat, and McKillop’s system requires a fairly specific type of player and he has the market almost entirely to himself for those guys.

Does losing Carroll and Boswell strengthen chances of landing future Mass Rivals players now that these “rivals” are gone or is the damage done?

Scott lacks the experience to be the #2 assistant though.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Not any new offers for ‘20s coming out of this last AAU weekend. I don’t even think URI offered any ‘21s this week.
Cox explained his process last year - at this time they are narrowing down their list to approximately 10 players.
It would seem they spent this Evaluation Period on identifying the ten ‘20s on their list that they will pursue for OVs.
We all know that Leggett and Darius Miles are on that list. Any other thoughts/ideas on other players that are a high priority?
I would expect there to be at least four bigs on the list.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Kaden Metheny was a new offer this weekend
Making the top 8 for Taj Thweatt would also seemingly indicate Coaches are still recruiting him hard (not sure if he is a true “big” though)
Hard to find videos of Noel Brown but considering the DC connections I imagine he is a top priority but doesn’t look like there is much competition now

Starting to see several of these final list announcements each day. With AAU ending the many recruits will narrow their list in late July/Aug to schedule their OVs for Sept & Oct.

I haven’t seen a list. In general I have heard the recruits that play on the sponsored AAU circuits (Nike, Adidas & UA) will not be attending.

Article by Dave Borges
There are expected to be about 400 players at the sessions in Storrs, including a bevy of local products. However, if you’re expecting some of the top recruits in the nation to be there (or at any of the other three sites) … well, you might be a bit disappointed.
For one, the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team will hold a mini-camp next week in Colorado Springs, Colorado. About 75 of the nation’s top recruits from the Classes of 2020-2022 will be out there, including UConn 2020 targets Cam Thomas, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, and Justin Lewis, a 6-7 power forward from Baltimore. UConn’s staff will be among the many attending the event.
There is also a FIBA event for international prospects in Greece around the same time.
Also, as the NCAA tries to usurp some of the summer recruiting influence from AAU programs, the response from AAU coaches seems to be to steer their kids away from the NCAA College Basketball Academy. As a result, most of the players at the academies next week figure to be low-to-mid-major prospects.
In fact, the three players UConn is most interested in that were slated to be at the event - 2020 Noah Collier, a 6-7 power forward from Westtown School in Pennsylvania and Niels Lane, a 6-5 shooting guard from New Jersey, and 2021u Trey Patterson, a 6-7 small forward from New Jersey - aren’t expected to attend (although Lane’s name still appears on the roster for Session I).
Still, UConn’s staff will likely be in attendance at some point next week, along with head coaches from low-and-mid-major programs and probably some high-major assistants.
Among the state players expected to be participating include: Jackson Benigni from East Hampton (Hamden Hall Country Day), Jahkai Pettway from New Haven (Hamden Hall), Josh Menard from Higganum (Loomis Chaffee), Mikey West from Waterbury (Lee Academy), Chuck Clemons of Trumbull (St. Luke’s), Ras Fisher of Stamford (Trinity Catholic), Zach Laput from Beacon Falls (Notre Dame-West Haven), Matt Knowling from Ellington (East Catholic), Joey Reilly from Cromwell (Phillips Exeter, East Catholic) and Aidan Carpenter from Hamden (Hyde School).

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
It looks like the schedules don’t show anything the first day. It shows four game sessions Tues & Weds from 3:15-4:45, 4:50-6:20, 7:30-9:00 & 9:05-10:35. It looks like at least three games going on in each session (it could be more). There are also game sessions Thurs morning at 9:15-10:45 & 10:50-12:20.
It starts all over again for Session 2 Friday with the same schedule thru noon on Sunday.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Like a lot of things with the NCAA, the new recruiting schedule was change for the sake of change without improving anything. This article gives a pretty thorough breakdown of the hits and (mostly) misses. I can’t see how this benefits teams outside of the top conferences or the players who haven’t, deserved or not, already cracked the rankings.
Regarding the camps, from the article:
The camps will have drills and sessions that emphasize life skills in addition to games scouted by college coaches. To participate in those camps, players had to be nominated by coaches and then register themselves on the NCAA website to be certified eligible. Blackmon Sr. says there was some confusion about the process and his grassroots program received the information late and missed the deadline to register...
Another potential hiccup comes from the coaches doing the nominating. “This might be an awful thing to say,” Capel says. “But when I was at VCU, there’s no way I would have nominated guys that I’m watching.” Capel recalls recruiting Eric Maynor, who was playing in a national tournament, but his team hadn’t advanced to play in the main gymnasium. Capel, as many mid-major coaches do, says he was “praying for Maynor’s team to lose” so he wouldn’t play in front of a bigger crowd at the main site where “these high-majors would be swooping in” to sign him.

Typical NCAA, the general public can get into Gampel but can’t get into the two other facilities to watch. There are five games at a time and only one is in Gampel. Their reasoning is that they don’t have as many restrooms etc in the Werth Center. There are less than 200 people here in total. What a joke.

Poorly run event. Leave it to the NCAA. There are more people working in the stands then there are people watching in the stands. Less than 20 coaches watching at Gampel.

Did u ask Al if he is opposed to recruiting undersized guards? I’m guessing Tyrese Rice and Tyson Wheeler are 2 of the better guards he has ever had, both sub 6’0.
