Re: The 2019 Coaching Carousel
I think Michigan AD prefers Cooley over Howard. Howard has never been a HC and hasn’t coached in college.
Cooley made $2.2 million in 2018-19
Beilien made
2015-16 $2.84
2016-17
2017-18 $3.37
2018-19 $3.8
Ed could be getting a big raise from either Michigan or PC.

Re: The 2019 Coaching Carousel
The Dunk looks bad, worn out.
PC got the new practice facility and what did it get them on the recruiting trail? Pipkins? I wouldn’t take Pipkins at URI for a free scholarship. Pipkins will end up being addition by subtraction for UMASS.
The Big East has quickly slipped from 1st or 2nd Conference to 5th or 6th. AAC is moving up and over the NBE quickly.
Tough time for PC to look for a new HC too.
I hope Cooley stays because I don’t think he is so hot as most do but I really think he is off to Michigan with his family.
It’s time for Cooley to move on. Michigan job is far and away above PC
He’s tired at PC and it is showing in recruiting and in conference records

The carousel is getting interesting it seems. If Cooley goes, I could see Schmidt getting the job. He runs a pretty good offense.

Not sure I get Michigan's interest in Cooley.
However I can see Cooley's interest in Michigan. I think he realizes that he can only go so far at PC, same as Dan did here.

Re: The 2019 Coaching Carousel
Small time thinking in my opinion although I would agree it would take a lot of things to happen. It is not hard to imagine as PC went into overtime to eventual nation champion Arizona Also Uri was well on their way to a final four running Stanford out of the gym. Harrick got a brain cramp and decided to start playing stall ball. A very beatable Kentucky coached by Tubby Smith ended up winning that year.rambone 78 wrote: ↑5 years ago Not sure I get Michigan's interest in Cooley.

If teams like George Mason , Loyola of Chicago and Vcu can do it so can both PC and Uri. With one of their best teams and a lot of luck as most teams need to make it that far.

The national college basketball media (Rothstein, Goodman, Gottlieb, Zags, Detroit Press UM beat writer) are reporting that Michigan AD is meeting with Cooley early this week and KMac responds with no he isn’t he is golfing at BE Meetings. KMac out if touch.

Thanks for that knowledge. I think Howard was an obvious choice that was going to be included to pacify a certain section of alumni. Cooley wasn’t an obvious choice but is being interviewed and mentioned as one of the front runners. Decision expected by the end of the week.

Re: The 2019 Coaching Carousel
Its pretty late in the hiring cycle. Yeah, its Michigan and they have plenty of cash and a good amount of prestige, but all of the hot coaching candidates after the NCAA tournament have pretty much either made their move or renegotiated their existing deals. So, it isn't surprising to me that Cooley would be a candidate for that reason - Solid track record at PC, which isn't the easiest place to win.
The other serious candidate seems to be Howard, which strikes me as a way worse option, but I admit that might just be a knee-jerk reaction. The track record on "former college star, back to old stomping grounds with no head coaching experience" seems to be bad. (I would be interested in there was an article or study on whether those types do significantly better than other types, though - seems like it would have been done at some point, somewhere on the Internet.)
I am also fully on board with Pitino back to PC, because that would be full-on, crazy pants fun. I have no idea how legitimate that tweet is in this thread, but I would "like" it 500,000 times, if I could.

Off topic, but Michigan related. Pelinka versus Magic: Wolverine on Spartan crime. Magic felt like he was being backstabbed? Boo hoo. Paul Westhead must be laughing his ass off. Loved Magic as a player, but he has been less than competent as a coach/executive.

I think this kid is a joke. He states he is the lead color commentator on the PC Student radio station (WDOM) for PC Basketball.
He tweeted Michigan will be paying Cooley $6 million/year which is a complete joke.

Ok makes sense about DeFilipo being the lead on the head coaching search and knowing Cooley
I think if offered Cools has to accept though I feel he won’t be great there and there has to be better options
If he leaves Pitino to PC makes tons of sense from both sides and good mention of Mark Schmidt too

Re: The 2019 Coaching Carousel
That tweet sounds like someone taking a chance and making a rumor a certainty with the hopes that he’ll look like he knows more than he does if it comes true. It’s not an uncommon approach (see more than a few comments on this board). Someone may have very well told him that, but if it didn’t come directly from Cooley, it’s worthless.

Re: The 2019 Coaching Carousel
I didn’t have an opinion on Cooley to UM before I read that the worst and stupidest human being in sports, Gene DeFillippo, is running the search. That guy single handedly ruined BC athletics with his hubris and impetuousness, so I’m sure that his running this search will turn out great. Whether they end up hiring Cooley or someone else, almost guaranteed to flop with that guy’s fingerprints on it.

While I was never on board with us hiring Pitino last year, there would have been one positive side affect. That would be the mental gymnastics some PC fans would have had to perform in order to either root for or make excuses for Pitino coaching URI.NYGFan_Section208 wrote: ↑5 years agoThis...500,001 times...SGreenwell wrote: ↑5 years agoI am also fully on board with Pitino back to PC, because that would be full-on, crazy pants fun. Re: The 2019 Coaching Carousel
I don't think Cooley was ever offered the job...I have a feeling the AD/search firm wanted him, but I think there was some blow back from fans/boosters and they'll likely go with Howard. Seems similar to when St. Johns hired Mullin and some fans took it as Hurley turning it down instead of him never being offered the job.
PC can get excited about the fact Cooley will never leave, but I don't think it was because he turned down the job. The NCAA record blemish wouldn't sit down with Michigan fans used to winning in March.
This from the Michigan board:
In 8 seasons at Providence, Cooley has never finished higher than 3rd in the Big East. His team has finished 8th or lower three times, including last season.
In 13 seasons as a head coach, he has exactly one season with less than 11 losses (25-8 with no NCAA tournament appearance his last season at Fairfield).
He is 1-5 in the NCAA Tournament at Providence, the one win came on a first round buzzer beater to beat USC.
He has never fielded a team that started or finished the season ranked in the AP top 25.
He has more seasons in his career with 14 or more losses than he does seasons with 13 or less losses.
His career winning percentage is 58.7%, which would have been 9th best in the Big Ten last year (behind Izzo, Painter, Beilein, Holtmann, Miller, Turgeon, Gard and Underwood aka any coach with a pulse)
He signed two 5-star recruits (Kris Dunn and Ricky Ledo) his first offseason at Providence and per 247, has signed 0 top-40 recruits since.
He has helped three players (Dunn, Ledo, Ben Bentil) get drafted into the NBA in 8 years and only one first round pick (Dunn).
