Can they please not backout?
I hope we made the buyout more expensive at least.

This is a bad take. Like him or not, it’s not Bill Koch’s job to be the PR director of URI (or for the Red Sox). It’s his job to report the facts. And I’m sure Koch wants URI to succeed. His job is better for him it it does. But he’s a reporter, not a fan boy. And he reports well.Rhody15 wrote: ↑5 years agoBecause he wants to see the program suffer and will bring up anything negative about the team at any given time.Rhody Sody wrote: ↑5 years ago Why is Koch speculating about bama backing out? Answer me this.
Over the last 3 years, using your best guess, has Koch has more positive or negative tweets about the program?

URI is likely to be facing several teams with new coaches next season:
Alabama
GW
St Joe's
LSU (assuming we meet in Jamaica)

Re: The 2019 Coaching Carousel
I agree with you, and also don’t really get the issue with Bill’s tweet about the impact of Avery Johnson being out at Bama. But, I would just point out that it isn’t Bill’s job to take veiled shots at the fan base and the program, either, which he has done on occasion. Overall, I like Bill’s coverage and I like Bill personally. Just worth noting that a lot of college sports media that are assigned to covering specific schools and programs are not exactly traditional journalists who commit to unequivocal objectivity, and do tend to take on a supportive voice; I’m not necessarily expecting that from Bill.steviep123 wrote: ↑5 years agoThe question is irrelevant. Good points TP. That said all he mentioned is that Alabama was coming to Kingston next season then someone asked if he thought Bama would bail and he responded.

Re: The 2019 Coaching Carousel
Ron Hunter leaving GA St to Tulane makes no sense.
He probably could've ended up at Bama!
3 NIT's and 1 tournament not enough for Bama people.
I feel like avery should've gotten more time.
Now they'll start from scratch and suck worse for a little while again.
Down years or not, cant imagine us getting someone better than LSU or Bama.
Wins over them are good by default for the most part.

Tyson would love to coach at URI. He's interviewed before. Might be hard with TJ in line but imagine him working with Fatts and Sheppard.

Wow- was not expecting this. Maybe some of those would-be transfers return to Alabama.
I always thought he would end up back “home” in Wisconsin or Michigan. Contract extensions really don’t mean much.

Re: The 2019 Coaching Carousel
Not impressed. Went 93-113 as head coach at Navy for seven years. Just two winning seasons. I get that Navy is a tough gig but what leads anyone to think he can succeed at St Joe's in the A-10?
2004–05 Navy 10–18 5–9 T–6th
2005–06 Navy 10–18 3–11 7th
2006–07 Navy 14–16 4–10 T–6th
2007–08 Navy 16–14 9–5 2nd
2008–09 Navy 19–11 8–6 3rd
2009–10 Navy 13–17 7–7 T–4th
2010–11 Navy 11-19 6-8 T-4th

Re: The 2019 Coaching Carousel
With the success he has had at Buffalo, it was only a matter of time. It seemed however that he was aiming only for a P5 job. The SEC, after a few down years, has really upped its hoops. It is not just UK and Florida anymore. SEC schools make so much money off football and tv deals that they can pay big bucks even for a basketball coach. He had been making a base of $600K which was to rise to $837K with his recent extension. His buyout clause should he leave has been decreasing. It was 1M a year ago but drops by $250k annually for this year and next with each subsequent season after dropping $100k. Alabama will only have to pay a buyout to Buffalo of $750K which is peanuts for them when they pay their football coach 8.3M/yr.

Same here, surprised by this move. I thought that Oats would've ultimately moved on to more of a basketball school.

Re: The 2019 Coaching Carousel
Not the same.
Alabama has appeared in the NCAA Tournament 21 times. It has reached the Sweet Sixteen eight times and the Elite Eight once in 2004. Alabama has an overall NCAA Tournament record of 21–20. It has sixteen NIT appearances with a record of 24–19. In the SEC, it trails only long-time basketball powerhouse Kentucky in basketball wins and SEC tournament titles.
Their basketball arena, Coleman Coliseum, is also to soon undergo an extensive $115 million renovation beginning after the 2021-22 season.

Re: The 2019 Coaching Carousel
Very good move by Alabama. And a solid addition to the SEC.
good also for the visit to the Ryan Center this year
Interesting I had seen a lot of names mentioned for Alabama but not Oats.
I know his family was happy with a Buffalo but he had mentioned a year ago that things could change in one more year, seeming to indicate that this could be the year he moves.
Going out at the top too. Buffalo had a very good year!

Good for Nate, I guess. Secure the bag and all that. But yuck, in general I don’t think much of Alabama as a basketball program. Plus it has the misfortune of being in Alabama. For whatever reason, I think it makes it less likely that they don’t play the game in Kingston next year which would be kind of cool, I guess.
