Conference Tournaments

Unread post by Obadiah »

The conference tournaments that lead to the 32 automatic bids to the NCAAT has already begun and this thread is the place to park your thoughts on play in those conferences not called the Atlantic 10 which has its own thread.

So far seven teams teams have made it. First one in was Murray State from the Ohio Valley and they were followed by Gardner-Webb, winner of the Big South, Bradley, winner from the Missouri Valley, and Liberty of the Atlantic Sun.

In tonight's action, three more teams were crowned - Fairleigh Dickinson of the NEC, Northern Kentucky of the Horizon, and Northeastern, CAA king. Northeastern upset Hofstra to get the crown. Northeastern proved that fast starts can propel an underdog to surprising outcomes as Huskies built a lead that maxed at 18 in the first half. Northeastern saw that lead evaporate when Hofstra tied the game with 9 minutes left, but the Huskies re-grouped to pull back into the lead which they held to conclusion. Vasa Pusica put in seven 3-ponters to lead the team

Saint Mary’s upsets Gonzaga to take an automatic bid and probably knock out a 15-14 team like Ohio state or Clemson off the bubble

Gonzaga was a 15 point favorite over St Mary’s!!!!
Northeastern was favored by 2.5 over Hofstra. Nice win to get an automatic birth for a New England team!

In addition to the bid stealing win by St. Mary's, North Dakota State got the auto bid as they won the Summit League championship by beating Omaha, 73-63.

A lot of league one seeds falling. Many of these are in the minor conferences and will get the consolation prize of an automatic NIT bid. A quarter of the 32 NIT bids are likely already accounted for. Probably a few more conference one seeds will take more. Will likely only be about 20 at large NIT bids given out.

WCC: Gonzaga - NCAA
CAA: Hofstra - NIT
Horizon: Wright State - NIT
OVC: Belmont - NIT (outside shot at NCAA)
Big South: Campbell - NIT
ASUN: Liscomb - NIT
MVC: Loyola - NIT
NEC: St Francis - NIT
Summit: S Dakota St - NIT

I don't understand. If there are 68 teams and there are 32 automatic bids, wouldn't there have to be 36 at large bids ?

But the first 30 are reserved for The Cartel. Obvious Nepotism Hire Dan Gavitt has one job: don't piss off The Cartel.

Kinda a bummer that Daum from SDSU and Chris Clemons from Campbell didnt make it since they're 3000 plus scorers. Wouldve made the tournament more interesting.

Dont think there's a path to the NIT for us after all those auto bids.

URI has an NET ranking of #137. That is somewhere near some 60 spots from the NIT cut line. The NIT this season has not been a real possibility for many weeks.

I don’t understand the love affair the announcers on Fox Sports 1 have with Cooley. What gives?

Having to play Villanova in less than a 15 hour turnaround is PC's reward for sucking most of the season.

Still, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a close game at the end, but I don't think they will win it.

KenPom is giving URI a 20% chance to win tomorrow.

KenPom gave West Virginia a 9% chance to win tonight.

Good for WVU - keep it going

I don't expect them to win tonight, but despite regular-Zion, the Orange hanging tough.

Houston is a dangerous team. Hurley will right UConn's ship.. but it will take 3 or 4 seasons. UConn fell as much as URI had under the end of CFL. Now if we could convince Hurley we are a good H&H

Really ugly game in the Big East at MSG between Seton Hall and Marquette. Three players ejected. Eight technical fouls called. 85 combined free throw attempts. 57 personal fouls. Four players fouled out. Just 45 combined made fg's.

Good news from the MWC - Nevada gets knocked out of the tourney by SDSU. Should hurt their seed. I hope they are sent the furthest distance possible. Would love them to have to go to Hartford after refusing to come to RI.

And if you thought it was ugly on TV, imagine being there. The refs called an extremely tight game after a near brawl and that was it. There were 33 free throws in the first 26 minutes. 52 in the next 14. Really hurt an otherwise exciting night at MSG.

As for interesting potential rule changes, Myles Powell picked up a Flagrant 1 in the first half, an unsportsmanlike T in the 2nd, remains in the game. To me, any two combination should be grounds for ejection. There’s been some discussion, it’ll be interesting to see if it goes anywhere.

Bad take, he isn’t going to dance next year and his seat won’t be boiling when he doesn’t. He will have an almost entirely new roster next year, it will be the bridge year for him to a team full of his own guys. He’ll get 4-5 years to get them back to where they once were.
