Week #14 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

Week #14 begins. The A-10 has no teams in the rankings. Davidson, despite a road win at St. Bonaventure, got no votes in either poll, inexplicably losing the six votes it got last week in the AP poll.

Tennessee and Duke hold the #1 and #2 positions in both polls. URI OOC opponents continue to get no votes in the top ranking or in the others category.

With the win over Saint Louis, the URI position in the key measurements improves versus last week:

NET - 116, up 12
BPI - 107, up 4
Sagarin - 107, up 9
Pomeroy - 119, up 6

The cumulative record to date for URI OOC opponents now stands at 141-119, .542, no change from previous week.

No Monday games in the A-10.

The only game involving URI OOC opponents is:

West Virginia at #8 Texas Tech, 9 PM. On ESPN.

They seem to currently be losing 74-38.

I’m sure Huggins is handling this season in a calm, relaxing manner.

Last night West Virginia got whacked at #8 Texas Tech 80-51. What a sad comedown for a team that was a preseason #16 pick.

Tuesday night action in the A-10:

Saint Joseph's at La Salle, 7 PM. On ESPN+.

Dayton at Saint Louis, 9 PM. On CBSSN.

No games involving URI OOC opponents tonight.

Other:

In Durham, Boston College versus #2 Duke and the Zion Williamson show, 7 PM. On ESPN.

I think it even sadder that WVU was voted #16 preseason. They obviously did not have anywhere near the talent for such a rating. The voters were lazy and did not do their homework. They merely voted for a high profile P5 school with a reputation and a legendary coach. Unfortunately, this is how the voting in the polls often goes.

St. Louis is in trouble....they are down to only 6 or 7 scholarship players...injuries piling up.....Bess might not play tonight.

I expect Dayton to win that game.

The top 4 A10 teams are separating themselves from the rest.....I don't expect Duquesne to keep up.

How about if we wait for the results of the next three weeks before we concede the top four to the current top four? We have 4 games against them in that time frame... as RJ likes to say, those games are opportunities...go and win them!

My reference to WVU preseason pick as #16 was not taken from the national polls, but from the Blue Ribbon Basketball yearbook whose correspondents can hardly be called "lazy" or unknowledgeable. Ask Chris Di Sano about that.

WVU was ranked based on having Sagobo Konate in the lineup, at full strength he is a shot blocking, dunking, physical specimen. And would be a major difference maker for them, not saying he catapults them from worst to first but they were ranked based on him being in the lineup and he hasn't played since November.

Syracuse with a matchup against the Noles tonite at home. Win, and they're still no more than a game out of 1st in the ACC.

The lost by 18. Why does Boeheim’s kid play so much. He sucked. 3-10 FG, 0-6 3P & 3 TOs. He couldn’t keep up.
He stood out as a D2 player playing with & against D1 players.

Dayton struggles on the road, like most in this conference.

Saturday is a must win...if you can call anything that.

St. Louis was due to play well....they didn't for 4 straight before last night. I though Bess was going to be limited....he wasn't.

They will still drop a few more games.

For sure. I meant specifically from a URI perspective... this was the first full Dayton game I saw this year but I think Rhody matches up well with them.

True, but the entire A10 is extremely average. Any team has seemingly lost to what the league rankings consider lesser competition. No one team, including URI, is really impressive this year. Not even Davidson. GMU just caught us on a extremely bad day. I want to play them again, BAD.

LaSalle won its 4th straight A10 game. Granted its been against the bottom of the league but Howard has them moving quickly in the right direction. Wouldn't be surprised to see them in the top 4/5 of the conference in 2 years. There are also plans for an upgrade of their on-campus gym to make it less high-school-esque.

I will only believe the LaSalle gym upgrade rumors once actual construction is started. There have been lots of rumors over the years about something being done there. The fact however that the school is so cash strapped that it recently proposed having its art museum sell off pieces doesn't give me a lot of confidence. The recent commission on athletics there which included the possibility of leaving the A-10 or even dropping down from D1 also makes me skeptical.

Until then, it reminds me of the situation at Fordham. They have a fan on their forum that has been saying that a new arena had been approved and would soon have construction started. This fan has continually been stating this for over a decade and nothing has ever happened.

Richmond's win over GMU, Fordham trashing UMass at Amherst, and the Bonnies winning at Duquesne are just more signs that this Ram team has badly underachieved this season. Forget the excuses about being a young team and giving the freshmen time to gel because given the resources, Cox and his staff have so far produced lemonade.

Obie, for returnees this year we have one solid big {Cyril}, one good PG [Dowtin]….and 2 players, one who played part time last season and one who didn't play due to injury....and neither one can throw the ball into the ocean from the beach. And this isn't anything we didn't know already.

Plus we have 4 freshmen, one who will be big star here and has already made a big impact [Martin] and 3 others who have had varying degrees of success so far....but 2 of them [Harris and Omar] very limited.

And we have a rookie coach who obviously has had his issues putting things together....not totally unexpected but some things are head scratching to say the least.

Put it all together and what have we got? A big mess so far....some flashes of good play mixed with the bad kind...and god awful shooting nights that are worse than CYO games.

I guess we expected too much out of this season, bottom line. What's worrisome is what can we expect next season? Are guys going to all of all sudden learn how to shoot 3's and FT's? Are the incoming recruits plus Walker going to help, and how much?

I think we may have to tone down our expectations until this coach and players prove otherwise, if they do.

Unless you are only counting games between New England teams, the game we blew against Duquesne is pretty damn close.

Being away isn't as bad, plus the Dukes started the half on an 11-2 run or something, so the 19 point lead lasted minutes into the second half.

True...still that game bothers me more than any other this season. 19 point half time lead with the ball starting the 2nd half. Instead of scoring and putting the lead into the 20s, we had a travel, travel, offensive foul let to 7 points in the first couple of minutes bringing the game to 12 points and letting them back in it. Those first 3 or 4 minutes were critical.

Here is a rather sobering thought - if the A-10 Tournament were to be held today, URI would be the #9 seed. They would be ranked right behind St Bonaventure and LaSalle.
