Second Semester Begins With Two New MBB Members
URI's second semester classes begin Wednesday January 23rd. As mentioned in the recruiting sub forum, URI basketball will have two new faces as part of the program. They will not play in games this season but will participate in other program activities. One is a transfer and the other is a previously committed recruit that was initially expected on campus next September.

As far as I’m concerned, this year has been all about prepping for a run next year. This news undoubtedly helps that.

Re: Second Semester Begins With Two New MBB Members
Many benefits:
Learning the offense & defense
Spreading their class workload out (required to take 9 credits to be a full time student)
Nutrition and strength & conditioning - especially for Mading he needs to gain around 15 lbs
On campus an additional two+ months of practice (Jan 22 - Mar)

Re: Second Semester Begins With Two New MBB Members
I’m stating the obvious by repeating that this is great news for next season.
I am always about now and having Walker on the practice squad is massive for game prep this year. Assuming he has stayed in close to game shape. Will definitely help the staff in replicating game situations.
Huge right now IMHO!

Great to have Mading in early and to have Walker back in a program. Not sure I’m completely clear on the scholarship situation and how I feel about that. Regardless, Cox seems to have a good plan for working them in.

Re: Second Semester Begins With Two New MBB Members
Edit: you could be correct with 12 credits in season. Some of the players take independent study courses for 3 credits.
They tske 6 credits over the summer.

Not sure what you mean about the scholarship situation Ace.
Prior to Walker and Mading arriving there were 11 scholarship players. Now there are 13.
Will and Preston graduate which opens two scholarships for Long and Hammond.
Do you mean Aris leaving after the first semester? I think that was mutual. He wanted to go back home.

I’m happy about this as I stated above but I’m unclear as well.
Can somebody link to an legit athletic department source where it’s been spelled out.....of course likely I missed it but clarity on our scholarship situation from an official source would be nice!

Re: Second Semester Begins With Two New MBB Members
Current Scholarships
Walker
Mading
Silverio
Harris
Martin
Tate
Russell
Tertsea
Langevine
Downtin
Thomspon
Preston (SR)
Leviton (SR)
We lost seven scholarship guys from last year (Matthews/Terrell/Garrett/Berry/Robinson/Akele/Layssard). We only brought in four new guys (Silverio/Harris/Martin/Tate) and gave Will a scholly which left two open for Walker and Mading.

Madding looked taller than Harris when Harris walked by him in the opening line up of the VCU game. Just my opinion. Someone break out the tape measure.

At the season ticket holder event, I was joking with Cyril that Harris said he was taller. Cyril responded “only by one inch”. Harris is definitely taller yet the Rhody roster has them both at 6’8”.

I kind of get his point- most trainers hate that work with cones and chairs and those masks, but also? Maybe bring it down a notch with that communication style. It reminds me of those super-charged, loud trainers at the gym. Look, buddy, I’m just here to go about 75% on this elliptical, mainly so no one in my house can bother me for the next hour or so. We good.

If he's the ultimate expert, shouldn't he be training Lebron, Steph, KD, etc.?

Re: Second Semester Begins With Two New MBB Members
Looking at the new guys in relation to our current guys, Walker is a little shorter than Dana, so I think he's closer to 6'6". But Mading is a little taller than Tertsea, so he could be a legit 6'11"(and still growing?)

Re: Second Semester Begins With Two New MBB Members
That's one of the things that aggravates the crap out of me about H.S./college basketball . How is it 6'6" 200+ becomes 6'9" 230. Absolute bull-shit! They should stand them up inFront of that grid-wall like we saw of Telstra and offer proof!! If that's the case he's a three/ undersized 4 ,not a legit 4 and not what we really needed. We already have Dana and Martin for that slot and Marial unless he gets a lot stronger.

I think Mekhi Long is listed as 6’7” and it don’t see him playing the 4. He’s a 3 as well.

Re: Second Semester Begins With Two New MBB Members
From his tapes, I see Walker as a true 3 with grit. Similar to Long but a little thicker. My preferred line would be to have Dowtin, Fatts and Martin soak up your 1-2 guard minutes (with Martin at the 3 sometimes) and then Walker, Tate, Harris and CL with the majority of the 3-4-5 minutes next year. Sprinkle in CT, Silverio and the frosh were needed.
You can’t have enough bangers like Walker. We have plenty of shoot first guys (which is fine) but you need guys to do the dirty work when CL is on the bench.
Cox and co obviously recognize that they’ll have to go after a legit pg and big man next year after Dowtin and CL graduate. But Walker may very well be the missing piece of hustle, muscle and rebounding they need for a good run next year. Seems like the kid plays with a chip on his shoulder.

I am not sure how close you were to make this evaluation but I respectfully disagree. There is no way Walker is 6’6”.Billyboy78 wrote: ↑5 years ago Looking at the new guys in relation to our current guys, Walker is a little shorter than Dana, so I think he's closer to 6'6". I also think Mading is 6’10”. I talked to him for a few seconds at UMass game when Rhody was warming up and the current Rhody bigmen walked by going to the lockerroom

Martin isn’t going to play the 2. He hasn’t played it this year. Thompson plays the 2 when Jeff is out.

Re: Second Semester Begins With Two New MBB Members
you Jeff played 39 minutes last game and when he was out for the 1 minute Thompson was not in his spot.
Martin played 37 minutes
I’d prefer Martin over Thompson in the 1,2,3,4 or 5
Seriously Martin is more capable at the 2 or 3 than Thompson as you want shooting capability from the 2 or 3. Thompson is a below average 3 point and FT shooter.
I hope his playing time decrease continues to go to Harris, Tate and/or Silverio.

If Tyrese wanted to play at the next level it would be at the 2. That said, right now he is a natural 3. His ball handling will need to improve for him to slide over to the 2G.

Re: Second Semester Begins With Two New MBB Members
Regarding the SLU game, Omar played 5 minutes at the 2. So Jeff, Fatts & Omar played 77 of the 80 minutes for the two G spots.ramster wrote: ↑5 years ago you Jeff played 39 minutes last game and when he was out for the 1 minute Thompson was not in his spot.

Thompson’s minutes since he has been coming off the bench - 25, 22, 24, 30, 30, 23 for an avg of 25.7. Season avg is 27.1
Not much of a decrease.
I would like to see Thompson’s minutes decline but I understand Coach Cox feels there is a benefit to Thompson’s experience and defense. The minutes aren’t going to decline much.
