Week #6 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

Week #6 of the season begins. No A-10 teams are ranked in the Top 25. In the AP Poll, Davidson gets one vote. No A-10 team gets any votes in the USA Today Coaches' Poll. No URI OOC opponent gets votes in either poll other than potential opponent, TCU, which gets votes in both polls. Kansas takes over the top[spot in both polls, dislodging Gonzaga in the face of the Zags loss to Tennessee. In a first, NJIT gets its first vote in a national poll, the AP one.

URI got a boost in the rankings with the Holy Cross win with added points because it was a road win. Current URI rankings versus those of previous week:

NET - 120, up 20
BPI - 119, up 19
Sagarin - 96, up 26
Pomeroy - 115, up 10

The cumulative record to date for URI OOC opponents stands at 55-39, .585, down 25 basis points from previous week.

Many schools are in their exam period, so game activity will be down during the week, though picking up on the weekend. As a consequence there are no games in the A-10 on Monday night nor are there any games involving URI OOC opponents.

Another slow night in college basketball. One game in the A-10:

NJIT at Fordham, 8 PM. On ESPN+.

No games involving URI OOC opponents.

On ESPN2, a Big Five match-up at the Palestra between Penn and #17 Villanova, 7 PM.

Not sure where to put this, but:

Hoping the PC game doesn't turn into a bad loss for Rhody.

Swider also: 1 pt, 1 reb, 4 fouls in 12 minutes. “Against an Ivy League team.”

It’s a tougher transition than people think.

Quinerly was ranked #26 ESPN and a 5 star. Swider was ranked #34 ESPN and a high 4 star.
- Quinerly plays 1 minute
- Swider plays 12 minutes: 0-3 FG, 0-2 on 3FG, 1-3 FT, 1 rebound, 4 fouls

Collin Gillespie, also a Freshman in the starting line up, who was lightly recruited until late in his state playoffs: played 24 minutes, 4-5 FG, 3-4 on 3FG, 10-11 FT, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 TO, 21 to be the game high scorer. Fouled out or would have had more points.

Saddiq Bey, also a Freshman in the starting line up, played 34 minutes, 5-10 FG, 1-4 on 3FG, 2-4 FT, 3 rebounds 2 steals 13 points

Plus Penn is a good team. The Ivy League is a 1 bid league but Harvard, Penn, and Yale are all capable of winning a game in the Tourney.

I was making a joke with the Ivy League team thing, but there is some truth to the idea that, as good of an Ivy team as Penn is, in terms of athletes a top recruit for a program with national championship pedigree should fair well against the type of athletes playing in the Ivy - even its top teams.

They beat Rutgers at home. Sandwiched around that win was a previous loss at then win-less Maine followed by the loss in the Bronx to NJIT.

Fordham may be 7-3 at this point but they have really played an extremely weak schedule:

City College of NY
@ Houston Baptist (L)
Florida Int
Youngstown St
Columbia
Alabama A&M
@Manhattan
@ Maine (L)
Rutgers
NJIT (L)

Their remaining OOC does not get much better:
Howard
James Madison
LIU-Brooklyn

https://fordhamsports.com/schedule.aspx?schedule=1272

Duquesne is another A-10 school that has really loaded up mostly on cupcakes. Dukes losses have however only been ACC teams Notre Dame and Pitt. The game at the Irish will be their lone true road game of the OOC schedule.

https://goduquesne.com/schedule.aspx?schedule=1372

It will be interesting to see how both these teams do once A-10 league play starts. Their schedules may net many wins but not have them well prepared and full battle tested.

No A-10 school is worse than Fordham on weakness of their OOC schedule. While Duquesne has also played a weak schedule, it is significantly better especially since two - Howard and UIC - have had better performance than expected. Add to that nice wins over Radford and William & Mary and their OOC resume is better. Richmond's schedule is the next worse after those two.

Wednesday is another slow night in college ball.

In the A-10:

Former conference rival, Temple hosts UMass, 7 PM. On ESPN3.

In games involving URI OOC opponents:

LIU - Brooklyn at Stony Brook, 7 PM. On ESPN3.

Hartford at Bryant, 7 PM.

Just curious if UMass @ Temple is a home and home? I'd love for URI to get a home and home with Temple going and some other former A10 foes. Glad West VA is one of them (albeit neutral/road).

Along these same lines as Quinerly, former 5 star recruit out of PA Quade Green has announced he is transferring from Kentucky.

This is what I mean- this story is not just about a freshman struggling with the transition to the college game. He’s a 5 star recruit, and Wright is just not playing him. Both refuse to give in or adapt, and I don’t see how this ends in any way but Quinerly leaving.

UMass up at Temple 37-27 at half.
The amazing thing is UMass had 6 points with 12:00 left in the half!
They scored 31 points in 12 minutes.

The cold to start the second half. They had 9 turnovers in the first 9 minutes.
With 7:47 left they have scored 11 points.
Holloway went out with an injury 1 minute into the game and is out for the game. That is hurting them offensively.
Whenever I watch Pipkins I am unimpressed. He is 2-11. Box score shows 2 turnovers. I have seen him turn it over 4 times while I was watching.

UMass turns it over twice just after 2:00 mark both lead to breakaway dunks for Temple to give Temple 5 point lead. Up to 12 turnovers in second half and 19 for the game.

Fittingly Temple misses a FT with 4.5 seconds left. UMass just had a full timeout to draw up play. Pipkins gets the ball in the backcourt and turns it over at half court. UMass loses by 2. UMass had more turnovers than made baskets in the second half.
They finish with 19 turnovers but it was more like 23. Pipkins 3-15 and 6 turnovers.

In other games, Stony Brook came back from a 10 point deficit with 5 minutes left in game to beat LIU-Brooklyn, 83-79. Rough going of late for Stony Brook.

Hartford took a road win as the Hawks routed Bryant, 91-74.

Another night of little action on Thursday. In the A-10 only one game:

Duquesne hosts Maryland - Eastern Shore, who sports a 1-8 record, with their only win coming against a D2 team.

No games involving URI OOC opponents.
