Week #1 - Games of Interest
The college basketball season opens on Tuesday, November 6, as 351 D1 teams begin their march to the NCAA tournament. A new metric will help define the 2019 participants in the NCAA Big Dance and the NIT. Replacing the RPI will be a new measurement called the NET. Its ability to differentiate the 351 D1 basketball teams will be tested as the season moves along. We will see.
Including URI hosting Bryant, there are 9 openers in the A-10. The others are:
Gardner Webb at VCU, 7 PM. On ESPN+.
Cleveland State at Davidson, 7 PM. On ESPN+
D3 CCNY at Fordham, 7 PM. On ESPN+
Penn at George Mason, 7 PM. On ESPN+
Stony Brook at George Washington, 7 PM. A campus game in the Hall of Fame Tip - Off. On ESPN+

A disgrace is putting it mildly.
Playing your entire OOC schedule against RPI 200's and 300's.
Their best players transfer out every season. Paschall might be an All American this season.
Never wanted to play when he was at Fordham, never stayed in shape. Now look at him.
Neubauer was supposed to turn that program around. He's had enough time to do that. Not happening.
Get rid of them.
Hell, even their fan board got so toxic, they shut it down.

Fordham's scheduling (for the past several years) runs 100% contrary to what the Commissioner of the A 10 has been preaching to its member teams. One would hope that this behavior may be reason enough to get them tossed from the League. Between their scheduling, their facility and continuous awful performances on the court discussions about their exit should be taking place.

No one is ever getting tossed. they would have to chose to leave. if we didn't toss SBU when they were giving welding certificates, we aren't tossing people because they play like crudeeli#10 wrote: ↑5 years ago Fordham's scheduling (for the past several years) runs 100% contrary to what the Commissioner of the A 10 has been preaching to its member teams. They could be voted out....my guess is they have been talked to about having to upgrade from this pathetic excuse for an OOC schedule.
There has been talk of them moving to the Patriot League where they have football.
Imo that's where they belong.

Tbh I don’t know what’s to gain from our last place team playing a competitive schedule and entering conference play 2-10 or something like that. Their RPI is gonna suck whether they play good teams and lose by 20-40 or play shit teams and win some games. They are beyond repair and need to downgrade for the betterment of all.

Re: Week #1 - Games of Interest
It’s why the RPI was a broken metric that needed to be changed. Teams could have mediocre records against elite OOC schedules and start conference play with artificially high RPIs which plummeted once conference play started. The goals of scheduling should be to beat the best teams possible on your schedule, not just play them. The new system will favor results so at this point doesn’t really matter what Fordham does. But you’d rather lose to great teams because it means you have the chance at the marquee victory versus playing teams you should beat but risk the bad loss.bigappleram wrote: ↑5 years ago Tbh I don’t know what’s to gain from our last place team playing a competitive schedule and entering conference play 2-10 or something like that. If the new system rewards results over SoS, wouldn’t you want to schedule and beat cream puffs? I’m no Fordham apologist, I’m just asking what the strategy should be.

Re: Week #1 - Games of Interest
It’s about quality, not quantity. You are better off losing to team 15 by 15 than beating team 250 by 25.You can’t beat quality opponents if you don’t play them. And it hurts the rest of the conference as a result, because Fordham either builds up their record with hollow wins or they suffer some bad losses which destroys their rating even more. You need as many cracks at quality opponents as possible as a conference. You don’t lose much in a loss, but can boost conference/team resume with win, and while it’s unlikely Fordham is competitive in that environment, it’s impossible without playing any of those games.

The home losses by GMU and GW don't help the league. The Patriots were supposed to be good and a possible NCAA bubble team. A home loss to Penn will hurt their at large resume.

Re: Week #1 - Games of Interest
Some results not mentioned so far:
Davidson beats Cleveland State, 83-63. Grady had 24 points.
VCU holds off Gardner-Webb, 69-57.
UMass Lowell gives UMass a tussle before falling, 83-65.
La Salle gave Temple all it could handle, losing 75-67.
With a big first half lead, Saint Louis took it easy in the second to beat SE Missouri State, 75-65.
Charleston pressed by Presbyterian before pulling away for a 85-73 win.
PC over Siena own the strength of 13 3 pointers, 77-67.
Also, Northeastern, considered one of the top teams in NE, was stunned on its home court by BU, 77-74.

What you’re saying sounds like SoS is the most important factor. So how is it different than RPI? Margin of victory?rjsuperfly66 wrote: ↑5 years agoIt’s about quality, not quantity. Re: Week #1 - Games of Interest
George Mason has a lot returning, and that tends to bode well for conference play. We’ll see, but I still like their roster.
GW led 22-0 at one point... and then lost. Stony Brook got it to 34-24 at halftime and then won in OT. Great job of coaching to keep your team in it mentally after that start.

If we make the Dance.....don't be an 8 or 9 seed....they will stick us in Duke's bracket again like they always do when we are seeded there.
Billyboy, they may even have the top THREE in the draft.
Just like anti-Pats fans hoping that Brady and Belicheck retire soon, so should we hope that coach K hangs it up and quick.
They were ranked no. 4 due to having 4 freshman starters. Those "freshmen" should go straight to the NBA....hell Zion is ready now.

If we make the tournament this year they can give us whatever seed they want. The eight seed is fine with me. It would mean we had a great season and won the first round of the tournament. I get your point, but sign me up!rambone 78 wrote: ↑5 years ago If we make the Dance.....don't be an 8 or 9 seed....they will stick us in Duke's bracket again like they always do when we are seeded there.

Two other A-10 openers occur tonight:
North Florida at Dayton, 7 PM. On ESPN+.
First round Diamond Head Classic opponent Bucknell visits St. Bonaventure, 7 PM. On ESPN+.
Only other action of interest is potential Diamond Head Classic opponent, #20 TCU hosting Cal State Bakersfield, 9 PM.

Re: Week #1 - Games of Interest
The self-described goal of the NET system is to reward teams for beating other good teams. It makes it different from simply rewarding SOS in this regard. Take this example: You have 100 team league. Team A faces an average opponent of 50, but those teams all rate as 46-55. Team B faces an average opponent of 50, but faces 4 Top 20 opponents. The committee would rather see 8-2 from Team B over 10-0 from Team A.Ramrod wrote: ↑5 years agoWhat you’re saying sounds like SoS is the most important factor. So how is it different than RPI? The NET system, or whatever systems they use...are just like the Coca Cola recipe.
We'll never be privy to how it all really works, because it really doesn't work.
At the end of the day, it's totally subjective, otherwise, there wouldn't need to be a 'committee.'

SLU shot 15 percent from 3 and 58 percent on FTs. That won't land in you in first place.

Shooting, floor spacing and a bad head coach will be what SLU has to overcome. The talent is there but certainly no sure thing.

Bona seems to really be missing Stockard tonight.
Dayton, on the other hand, did fine without Cunningham. Toppin seems to have made good use of his (non-optional) redshirt year.

Not much action on Thursday evening.
One game in A-10:
Siena travels to play George Washington in camps round of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off, 7 PM. On ESPN+. Game will provide interesting contrast to how PC handled the Saints.
Also as a campus round game in the 2K Classic, Morehead State is at UConn, in the kick-off to the Hurley era in Storrs. 7 PM. On ESPN3.

This is sort of a rebuilding year for Rhody, if the league is gonna stink, then it allows the Freshman to ease into conference play more easily while they develope and gives this team a better chance at another Conference/tourney championship.
