For perspective, St Louis has been recruiting at the highest levels of the A-10 recently and they just landed their third recruit for 2019. Long is higher rated than all three to date. Obviously doesn’t mean much until we see on court production but wanted to throw that out there for people obsessed with website ranking systems.

oof, 1 name jumps out there....Jon Lucky

top 100 recruit by some trackers, billed as having All American potential and beat out ACC/Big East teams for him.

has an underwhelming freshman season and flames out hard from there....and unfortunately even more so in his personal life post college.

Ratings aren’t these kids ceiling, just a place marker for where they were subjectively ranked.

With our size, man, we will be a tough out. Imagine adding a 7 footer. We could potentially field a line up of 5 guys 6’5 and up.

To be somewhat fair to Lucky, I think he had a severe knee injury early in his career - can't remember if it was before, during or after his freshman year. I always view injuries as kind of an 'other' factor on a recruit's development.

Mading seems more like a 3 than a 4, but it really doesn't matter in the world of position-less basketball

I doubt the staff would accept this verbal unless 1. it doesn't impact Walker or 2. Walker gave them the heads up he was looking elsewhere. I think Walker is a reach, but DC_URI seems to think Walker had a lean so who knows. Hammond, IMO, is more of a short-term support, but has a lower ceiling than Mading. Based on where we are with our classes I feel we're in the position to take a longer-term ROI player like Mading over Hammond since immediate playing time isn't necessarily available unless it's for a stud (Walker).

The ideal 4 man recruiting class at this point is:
Long (Verbal)
Mading (Verbal)
Walker (Pitt, Illinois, VCU, Miami)
McLeod (FSU, LaSalle)

Excerpt from Bill Koch's article today: The 6-foot-9 Mading is a Sudanese national by way of Australia. He’s currently completing his prep career at Springfield Commonwealth (Mass.) and played his grassroots basketball with the unaffiliated, Pennsylvania-based L&L Running Rebels. He joins wing forward Mekhi Long in a Rams’ class that could eventually reach four players.

Looks like 4 recruits could be a possibility.

interesting, also has walker 165 and McLeod 194. basically once you get outside the top 25-30 it gets screwy.

Prep Hoops is clueless. There isn’t one real evaluator that would rank Long ahead of Walker and Bishop. This is there “updated” report and they show recruits who committed two weeks ago as uncomitted.

This was a question asked to Corey Evans on the A-10 today.

@coreyevans_10
We've seen the success of little used BCS school guys transferring down to conferences like the A-10 to be "THE GUY." How can the A-10 market themselves to attract those guys in the first place?

Great question. It just comes down to success when it matters the most: during the NCAA Tournament. The Atlantic 10 needs to not only receive multiple bids but also see more than one of its teams reach the Sweet 16 or further. That has become the norm for leagues such as the ACC, Big Ten or Big 12.

Also, the Atlantic 10 needs to see facility upgrades, higher salaries for the coaches, charter flights to away contests and a number of teams to make a mark in recruiting the Rivals150. It is difficult that those among the top of the league can buy non-conference games while the lower-rung programs can't.

If the proper buy-in can be made by the powers that be at some of the consistently unsuccessful programs and if wins are had in March, we could see the Atlantic 10 as more of a destination league rather than a fallback conference.

I agree with that take also....however there are several schools in our league that can't or won't spend the money to upgrade their programs.

Just like what's going on with the rest of the country....the gap between the haves and the have nots just keeps growing.

for the albatross of the league, Fordham, it is purely a "wont" situation...after all, they are sitting on a $738 million endowment (and growing).

for comparison, our endowment is $146 million

Yeah, the powers that be at Fordham have zero interest in building a new arena...of course being in the city, where would they put it?

If the A10 is serious about upgrading, some tough decisions need to be made going forward....with the current lineup of schools, there's no way toward getting a much better TV deal.

We keep talking about not accepting commitments from some recruits, while waiting on top targets. I'm sure you have to be skilled in your delivery to keep a lower level recruit interested. How do you think that discussion actually goes?

This happens all the time at every school. The recruits, their parents & advisors are aware of the situation. There is typically a reasonable timeframe that a recruit will wait for a decision from a school before moving on. An example in URI’s case right now is they can explain to a recruit that they are trying to determine if they will have three or four scholarships available for next year and expect to know by (plug in the date for a decision). The URI coaching staff has a combined 35+ years experience in college recruiting. They have seen and handled any possible situation that could arise.

They will have a scholarship for Walker when he makes his decision.

Preston Murphy was named in the article of offering $100k from and other benefits. I think he was one of the few assistants still coaching with his team that was named in the allegations.

Remember the source of that speculation. Bowen Sr is not credible. There is a reason no action was taken against Creighton or Miami.

I think he’s probably credible. This stuff does happen. It’s a tough look for Preston, but he’s hardly the only coach in the country that has been in the position of communicating these offers. Assistants aren’t going rogue and offering a year’s salary to a recruit’s family on their own; they’re just cogs in the machine.

Dawkins (sleeze) told Bowen Sr that these schools and/or Adidas where going to pay. Dawkins goal was to be the kid’s agent when he went to the NBA. It is possible that Dawkins exaggerated the dollar amounts and the schools. It seems the money came from Adidas reps. It could have also come from the sleezy financial advisor looking for clients. Adidas wanted these player signing Adidas sneaker deals when they went pro. He was told he would get $80,000 from Louisville but only got $19,000 after 4 months had gone by.

There is a reason the FBI hasn’t pursued Miami or Creighton.

Whether the amounts are exaggerated or not, though, there is no denying that this market has existed for a long time, definitely existed at the time of this probe, continues to exist now, and almost surely will exist well into the future - for as long as college sports’ amateur rules are around.

I don’t think it does, at all. I can’t speak for what he did at Creighton, or even BC (although I think it is highly unlikely that BC was doing this stuff). But as far as URI is concerned, there is 0.0% chance that any kind of shenanigans were going on here. And it’s not because I don’t think Hurley ran that kind of program (which, for the record, I don’t), but because even if we wanted to pay for players we don’t have access to that kind of cash. Maybe the only context in which I’m glad we can’t throw around money like some other programs in the country.

But anyways, even if Preston did convey a $100k offer to the parent of a recruit, it’s not like he was offering his money. If an assistant delivers the message, he’s just a messenger. The decision of whether or not to do that comes from the top, so I don’t really think less of assistants whose names get dragged into this stuff - it’s a reflection on the programs they work for, not them.
