That's funny. Does the Dayton board know he was wearing a URI shirt during a pick up game ??

There's a sign-in sheet at the place, so he knows it's him. Interesting that he's repping Rhody ...
I just thought it was funny considering that he's going to a school in our conference and is still repping our free t-shirt in public. Good branding for us.
My brother in law thought he was really really good, but one would think that most D1 college athletes look really really good compared to other guys at a rec center.

I still feel that if we had had 2 openings, we would have signed him in April.

Hurley is an educator, and molds boys into men.
.....I was told on two separate occasions [by two asst. coaches] that not all recruits want to buy into the discipline and academic effort to be successful here. You do not always know that when offering, but it can come up later, resulting in us backing off. You try to avoid that scenario, but sometimes it happens.

For the record, Toppin wasn't offered here not just due to his academics but because it wasn't believed he'd be good enough to play here this year or next. Likely won't contribute much until his RS Soph year.

Re: '17 NY PF - Obadiah Toppin (Dayton)
Toppin has been instrumental in all of Dayton's wins including today . Boy did we miss on him as you said 83. I have seen all of Dayton's games
and he is becoming Dayton's biggest offensive weapon . He is amazingly polished and athletic . We can only hope that Harris can reach his level
by the end of the season or sometime next season. As far as the Flyers, they are a very mistake prone team, giving the ball away far too often .
However, they do have a load of talent and will be tough if they ever learn to take better care of the ball.

Makes sense I think we as fans do not realize what goes on behind the scene in regards to recruiting. It is ironic though that Hurley took Akok at Uconn I have heard some not so good things about him as far as buying in but maybe they are not true. I guess we will find out. Or is Hurley maybe more willing to take risks there to deliver faster.CTRamfan wrote: ↑6 years ago Hurley is an educator, and molds boys into men.

I think Akok is 19 years old and he hadn’t taken the SATs until earlier this month when he decided to leave PSA. That might be a sign of his academic strength.

If DH wants five star guys he will have to loosen his archetype - he will have to swim with the sharks and probably take some high risk kids.

Idk, this one may be worse. And FWIW, this tracks closer to what I heard at the time. I don’t think they loved Toppin when they had him in for a look, if I am remembering that correctly.

They didn’t love him then and they also assumed he may go the JUCO route. His grades were POOR. I don’t think DH thought he was worth the risk.

We couldn't get Toppin, he can make his free throws. Any true Ram fan knows we only recruit players who can't make their foul shots.

Since we've been talking about Obi lately, I thought I'd bump this. Always interesting to read our old comments.

Pretty cool that Obi drove a Jacob back to URI during Xmas break and he met with some of the URI players

Hurt his ankle against UMass. There's blood in the water and I see sharks circling....

Usually I don’t care if an opponent’s star player gets hurt. But Obi is special and his brother plays for us. Beating an Obi-less Dayton would be a hollow victory.

Yeah, would be nice to go toe to toe with him healthy. Just referencing how other teams like VCU must be feeling. I'm sure to plenty of opponents it would be a relief to not have to face him and could have a shot at a victory with a high ranking.
