Re: Women's basketball overseas trip
I'm all for equal opportunities for women but do we think that those resources could be better used with female teams that actually have success (rowing, volleyball, etc). When was the last time women bball had a winning season?

Don't know much about the women's BB program but isn't this the sort of thing that could help them with recruiting and thereby increase the relevancy of the program. Seems like the sports u mentioned are already doing ok.

Re: Women's basketball overseas trip
On top of what RKelly said, women's basketball does take in some money, more than the programs you mentioned, and it has the potential to bring in significantly more, so it makes sense to try and elevate them

Last year was disappointing but I think LaForce has the program going in the right direction.

Right direction?? 2016-17 (6-23), 15-16 (12-18), 14-15 (17-13) being that I believe she is the second or third highest paid coach besides Hurley and Flemming, should we at some point expect more. Just figure that if that money goes to other female programs that can attract walk ons who pay full tuition and bring in conference championships where women's basketball will always cost because we can never break even with the Ryan Center for home games or the money needed to support this program per Title IX.

Re: Women's basketball overseas trip
I think the Portugal and Spain Trip is great for the Team and for Recruiting. Read about incoming Freshman Marta Vargas who is from Amadora, Portugal.
GoRhody currently is running profiles on the players. Players talk about how they have never been out of the US and how much they are looking forward to this trip. They often talk about a desire to play Basketball Overseas one day so this trip is important in that respect.
Incoming Freshman, Marta Vargas, was selected for the Portuguese Women's European Championship Roster. After competing at the U-18 Women's European Championship, Vargas will meet her Rhode Island teammates in Lisbon, Portugal during the Rams' European trip. Rhode Island heads to Portugal Aug. 25 for one game before traveling on to Spain for two more contests against international competition.
We just had announced Davida Dale would be transferring from Syracuse to URI. Davida will have to sit out a year, but will be worth the wait. Dale was an outstanding player in Rhode Island in High School, ranked Top 75 Nationally when she selected Syracuse.

Here are the profiles to date on our new roster additions: Jessica Rogers, Maia Moffitt, Erin Jones (Transfer from Hartford will sit out a year) and Abby Streeter:

Re: Women's basketball overseas trip
Oregon State and Clemson's basketball teams checked in from Barcelona and said they're ok. Our women's team was scheduled to be there in about a week, no word if that's been cancelled now.
