Re: 2017-2018 Rotation
I think Dre has it - except I would expect either Preston or Tertsea to be higher on the sub list to spell Cyril.
For those who will disagree about the 4 guard starting lineup - it is what Rothstein proposed a few weeks back and we know his knowledge of our program is strong. Unless one of the bigs really steps up over the summer, this should be the lineup.

Pretty much agree here....Preston will be higher if he's going to be any help.....rhodylaw wrote:I think Dre has it - except I would expect either Preston or Tertsea to be higher on the sub list to spell Cyril.

BUT.....4 guards will be OK against some teams....but where is the rebounding going to come from, especially when Cyril gets in foul trouble?
We'll know very soon with the NIT tournament being so early.....we are going to have problems if MT and ML aren't good enough.....
And wait until the season after.....

Re: 2017-2018 Rotation
I'm not sure I see how Layssard is going to make the jump to starter this season, at least to start. Would have to see an awful lot of improvement to get to that point. Stan will be starting as the 4th guard in my opinion, at least to start the year.
I think Dowtin/Garrett is a real toss up for starter at this point, but no doubt both will be getting plenty of minutes. If Garrett is fully healthy again and back to his old self, I don't hate the idea of Dowtin coming off the bench. I think he could be a real asset in that role.

Re: 2017-2018 Rotation
I just think Dowtin only started half the season and has more meaningful wins than Jarvis has his whole career. And that's not a knock on Jarvis but more just how special Dowtin is. Leading the A-10 in assist to turnover ratio is no small feat!

Re: 2017-2018 Rotation
I'm thinking that Preston is going to be part of the starting 5. As a JUCO with only 2 years of eligibility left, I'd assume that the staff wouldn't have signed him if they didn't think that he could come in and help right away.
I think a healthy Jarvis starts at point guard, and I think Stan sees minutes at the 4 in a small ball line-up.
Ultimately, I think we are going to see a pretty large rotation, since I think foul concerns in the front court, there will be minutes available guys coming off the bench.
Starting Lineup
1 - Jarvis Garrett
2 - Jared Terrell
3 - EC Matthews
4 - Ryan Preston
5 - Cyril Langevine
Guys Coming Off the Bench
Jeff Dowtin
Stan Robinson
Nicola Akele
Fatts Russell
Mike Tertsea
Mike Layssard
Christion Thompson
Andre Berry

I hope Preston is good enough to be starting from day one, I just don't know enough about him to really say either way I guess. I do also still think Stan has a ton of value as a spark off the bench to.

Total Minutes (PG-SG-SF-PF-C)
Starters
Terrell 31 (0-25-6-0-0)
Matthews 31 (0-0-25-6-0)
Langevine 28 (0-0-0-0-28)
Dowtin 24 (17-7-0-0-0)
Robinson 21 (1-0-4-16-0)
Bench
Russell 15 (12-3-0-0-0)
Garrett 15 (10-5-0-0-0)
Preston 11 (0-0-0-7-4)
Akele 11 (0-0-0-11-0)
Tertsea or Layssard or Berry 8 (0-0-0-0-8)
Thompson 5 (0-0-5-0-0)
Unknowns
1. Who will win the backup center job? There's at least 8 minutes up for grabs there.
2. How good is Russell? By the way the coaching staff has talked about him, it sounds like he'll get his minutes.
3. Does Thompson have a role? I think he brings defensive value so I got him pegged at 5 minutes a game for defensive purposes. He's a hard player to figure out, I could see him breaking out to a point where we pencil him in as a starter next year or being completely left out of the rotation by conference play.
4. Assuming Garrett is healthy, does he regain some of the minutes he lost? He was between 14 and 16 minutes down the stretch last year and that had positive results. Hard to see an increase unless Russell adjusts slowly. Good problem to have if Garrett is healthy, Dowtin improves, and Russell is ready.
5. What type of player will work out best at the 4 spot? My thoughts on the 4 spot are below.
Robinson - We'll have some issues down low against a strong PF but I think this lineup puts the most talented lineup on the floor.
EC - opens up the backcourt so that we can play Garrett, Dowtin, Terrell at the same time. Will cause mismatches for opposing defenses but can EC defend a PF. Might be our best option if we're able to exploit the mismatches on offense but that will require improvement in the transition game.
Preston - I'm assuming he will bring athleticism on defense and rebounding which is what we want but who knows if he can play at the A-10 level especially right away. It took Iverson a year and half to learn how to play defense at that spot without fouling.
Akele - I think he's one of the smartest players we have which means he won't be a liability out there. He showed signs of being a solid passer last year. He made a nice high low pass to Langevine vs Oregon. Thought I was watching iverson and Martin. Plus he always looks to pass out for a 3 after getting an offensive rebound which I like. But he's not going score like a 4th guard and I don't see him being a big rebounder which Preston could potentially be.

Ten players will be in the rotation. I think that leaves Tertsea and Thompson on the outs. Layssard and Berry fighting for last spot in rotation.

Re: 2017-2018 Rotation
A four guard lineup will get killed in OOC.
Same if they make the NCAAs.
You can get away with it in the smallish A-10,
and pile up wins.
This isn't 1965 with 6'3" forwards.
There's no Martin or Iverson to balance the floor
on offense.
Two rim protectors gone.
An able but foul prone Langevine won't make up for
Martin, let alone both Martin and Iverson.

Re: 2017-2018 Rotation
Among Preston, Layssard, Tertsea and Berry, two of them have to play a good amount of minutes, imo....let's say, 15-18 each. The question is, which two will it be? Since I have never seen two of them play and hardly have seen the other two play, I have no idea. And there ya go, there's an out on a limb prediction...

Re: 2017-2018 Rotation
Someone from Laysard, Tertsea, Berry, and Akele, has
to emerge and play major minutes, in addition to Langevine.
Beyond the PF, you need to develop a backup center.

That's fair but the second part of that equation is getting all the guards their minutes. Who would you take the minutes away from? Robinson? Garrett? Dowtin? I would imagine EC and Terrell are locked in for 30 like last year.

Re: 2017-2018 Rotation
Getting anyone minutes should take a back seat to
winning as a team.
Floor balance and interior defense is important to that end.
The guard rotation worked last year, using Robinson
in certain situations, playing who was hot and less time for who
was not.
Defense was also an important point, with EC coming out
when defense was needed.

If we had only landed Juiston, this conversation would be much simpler. A good defender, a rebounding machine and a servicable offensive game. Boy, that was a blown opportunity.

Re: 2017-2018 Rotation
Yes, but what is Carr's status?
Is he staying in a non recruiting position? Did he leave? Was he fired?
Will he blame me if the latter is true?
A source told me a former head coach was in
the process of being hired on staff in some capacity.
That, with Boswell's promotion, would seem to
complete the staff, unless they're adding yet
another assistant.

No, much younger(52) and not that successful as a head coach as Blaney was.
Had a winning record as head coach, but last 3 years in the
job were a disaster.
Did go to 4 post season tournaments and was winless.

I don't understand how it was a "blown opportunity." That makes it sound like he wanted to come here, but when he called to commit nobody was around to answer the phone. For anyone out there wondering, that's not what happened. They wanted him, he wanted to go somewhere else. It's true Carr was the lead recruiter. If Juiston was going to come here, the situation with Carr wouldn't have mattered. It's a convenient coincidence that people who love to complain about everything can point to.
I don't believe that if nothing happened with Carr or if someone else had recruited Juiston or if Dan had blown off Fatts to go watch him, that he'd be at URI. The kid wound up at UNLV. Some kids are just UNLV type kids.

I was really hoping going to the tournament would improve the Fellowship of the Miserable thing this board has had for years. I'm not even sure how much the edge was taken off. It's depressing.

Re: 2017-2018 Rotation
Nope.
As for the fellowship of the miserable thing, nobody here is even remotely miserable.
However, there is some concern about recruiting. That would change if the staff nails it for the 2018 class.
We are waiting to see some evidence of that. There is still a lot of time, but you would hope there would be tangible evidence by now, of us being on a few recruits' short lists.
And there isn't yet.

Re: 2017-2018 Rotation
No way a four guard rotation will work, but if you wanted too, you could start 3 guards then for certain stretches of the game, switch to 4 guard.
1.Jarvis (to start season)
2. JT
3.EC

I disagree with every single word of this.rambone 78 wrote:Nope.

So Moore replaces Carr and someone replaces Boswell. So on this board Boswell went from being promoted to being demoted or let go? Interesting.rambone 78 wrote:By way of "contract not renewed".........
And someone familiar will be named the new DBO......and it's not Boswell.
Everyone will know soon.

Re: 2017-2018 Rotation
I think Moore is coming on in an advisory role and wouldn't be taking one of the assistant coaching roles. That would move Boswell into Carr's spot on the bench and leave the DBO position open, for whoever is being hired to fill it.Iggy1979 wrote:So Moore replaces Carr and someone replaces Boswell. Re: 2017-2018 Rotation
Going from a walk-on player to Director of Basketball Operations in a short period of time would be impressive. Not saying that's what's happening. Just saying it would be impressive.

More or less impressive than graduating in three years while being a walk on athlete?
Take down the Robert Carothers banner and fix the concession stand lines
