Coach K couldn't turn Duquesne around. It's been widely publicized how poor the investment and dedication to that program are. The same things that had to change at URI that Thorr has done, they will never do there.
It's not a priority for them and I feel for the coach who takes that job. It's an absolute career killer for them.
All of that said they shouldn't be in our conference. Find another school to hold the midwestern footprint down to keep Dayton happy, but Duquesne makes us all worse.

Re: Duquesne fires Ferry
Per my understanding, not all of that construction money is slated for basketball. Much of it is for other sport athletics operations. Furthermore, the renovation to the Palumbo Center opened in 1988 will be to add more creature comforts which will result in a further reduction of capacity. The building originally opened with nearly all bleacher seating with a capacity of 6,200. With each renovation and upgrade since then, it has reduced capacity to the present day number of 4,390 which is a 30% decrease. Demand for tickets has never really been high at Duquesne so this has not mattered. The Dukes for instance drew a grand total of 21,915 to 18 home games this past season for an average of 1,218.RhowdyRam02 wrote:I'm kind of surprised by this. There's talk that Duquesne is looking to spend $40 million to upgrade the Palumbo Center and associated facilities. If they do that they will have to play in an alternate venue next season. Seems like you'd be better off riding with Ferry for one more season so your next coach doesn't have to deal with the renovation inconveniences and bringing in a new coach and renovated arena at the same time should lead to maximum excitement and optimism in the fan base.
The ever shrinking AJ Palumbo Center Capacity
1988 Capacity 6,200
Sometime pre-2010 Capacity 5,358
2010 Capacity 4,406
2016 Capacity 4,390

We thought we had it bad. Duquesne has not been to the NCAA since 1977. That is 40 years. During that time the best they have done is four NIT appearances (1980, 1981, 1994, 2009).reef wrote:Bye bye Ferry bye bye

As a point of reference for younger Ram fans, URI since 1977 has appeared in seven NCAA tournaments (1978, 1988, 1993, 1997, 1998, 1999, & 2017) and eleven NIT Tournaments (1979, 1981, 1987, 1992, 1996, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2015).

Duquesne Message Board Thread for Current Head Coach Hiring
They had two players make the A10 All Conference Freshmen Team but losing 14 of their last 15 games was rough. Their only win in the last 15 games was when they beat UMASS by 30 points

You might want to check your facts regarding Pat Skerry. Look at where Towson was before he got there and look at Towson now. That's outstanding work by Pat Skerry.bigappleram wrote:They sure did. Ferry, Patsos and Skerry were all wanted by some here. None of them have done jack shit.

They were irrelevant before he got there and they are a shred less irrelevant now. So 6 years and 1 CIT bid and that's outstanding? I disagree.
In a conference where 1-2 recruits can catapult you to the top that is hardly outstanding. He brought 3 Big East transfers to the CAA and earned a CIT bid. If he is so outstanding why hasn't he gotten a whiff from a bigger school? It's hilarious you nitpick Dan and consider Skerry's resume outstanding...tells me all i need to know. You loco.

Funny, back in the 60's and earlier, Duquesne was an
Eastern power.
They had some significant players.
The Iron Dukes were an original Eastern 8 team. Around 1990 Duquesne and La Salle made the inexplicable decision to join the Midwestern Cities Conference (which today is either the Horizon or the Summit), which was an express ticket to anonymity. La Salle eventually recovered, with the help of our own Pappy Owens, but it basically killed Duquesne.

If he took that job that is not a good look for the A-10, and it's a big loss for the league he is a great coach. He should get a bigger opp, gets a lot out of a little.

Lorenzo Romar is fired at Washington.
Martin hires former Washington assistant Michael Porter Sr as an assistant.
Porter's sons (2017 Michael Jr and 2018 Jontay) are expected to follow along/commit to Missouri.

To those who ask why a coach would take ______ job: I've known quite a few coaches over the years, and one thing they have in common is ego. Some hide it better than others, but they all have it. Every one of them thinks he could turn _______ around if he got the chance. Within three weeks, Duquesne will have someone who believes he will succeed where others failed.

Romar been at Washington for a long time I wonder where he lands ??
I heard on radio today Eric Mussleman who done great job at Nevada Reno will get a better job next year

The curse of Bob Knight.
Indiana has gone to a couple of Sweet 16s.
Great by any standard, but after Knight's 24
NCAAs and 3 National Championships, and five
Final Fours, it's weak.
Fanbases at Indiana and UCLA still feel entitled
to be a top program and reclaim their glory days.
Anything less is unacceptable.
This regardless of reality.

Would expect they will see how the NCAA Tournament Progresses and see how Teams and their Coaches perform.
The bad side for fans whose teams become Cinderellas. There's a lot of money out there as Missouri just showed
Glass said that he has been charged to find a new coach. He will not create a search committee but said that he will consult with basketball experts around the country, including former Indiana players.
"The expectations for Indiana University basketball are to perennially contend for and win multiple Big Ten championships, regularly go deep in the NCAA tournament, and win our next national championship -- and more after that," Glass said in the statement. "We will identify and recruit a coach who will meet these expectations."

There you go! How unrealistic is this?
Is Jesus available to coach Indiana?
Just insane expectations on whoever takes this job.
Fourth coach after Knight.
At UCLA, other than Jim Harrick, every one of the seven
coaches who succeeded John Wooden failed to
win a championship.

I never wrote anything about Hurley with regard to his players. They seem to love him. Hurley however does have a fiery demeanor on the sidelines during games which irritates refs, opposing coaches (speak to Turgeon at UMD), and opposing fans. That is undeniable and it is what the general public sees and what forms its perception.
Knight's legacy with his players was mixed but was likely a big cause for his dismissal as it included verbal and physical abuse of some players. I however do not think the school liked and condoned his behavior on the sidelines which included berating refs, banging on the scorers table, hurling obscenities at fans in the stands, and throwing chairs onto the court.

ummm, they've had six total, 4 if you count non interim and non application lying coaches. They never should've booted Willingham out the door, he was building something. Ironically Charlie only won games early on when he had Ty's players
Bob Davie for 5
George O'Leary for 0
Ty Willingham for 3
Kent Baer as interim
Weis for 5
Kelly for 7
