We will be lucky to finish in the top 6... This wasn't the year for being encouraged about a comeback we shouldn't of put ourselves in a hole. I'm not buying the hype next year either I need to see actual results for once.

I think this will be what the remainder of the season is. The rams will play tough each game, will win some and lose some, we just don't have all the pieces right now. We arguably did before the EC injury but we don't have that go to guy just yet. Maybe that will be develop as the season nears the end but it is what it is. Still, the effort was there especially in that second half and that can be appreciated.

I'm not one to question Hass's toughness but he didn't look to be in much pain on the bench in the second half. You would think he would have tried to play through it...or at least try???

Neither are we...hopefully they wax them, but who knows.
I hope they learn from tonight they can do some full court pressure back to zone...was a nice comeback, but they just had two guys that couldn't miss.

Hey they didn't quit.....just not enough.

Where was the FT shooting when we needed it in our other games?

Terrell woke up, finally.

Need to have Hassan back by league play, to even have hope of a top half finish.

Still putrid shooting.

Beaten by a 2 man team. The defense is lacking something, unfortunately. Opponents' guards are feasting on us. They can't miss, we can't make.

Man, if we only had a couple guys who were consistently good shooters.

Gotta say, that was one hell of a trapping defense.
Too bad we don't have the depth to do it more often.
Terrell had a great second half.
Iverson had 13 rebounds.
He was all over the place, and his fouling out hurt.
The double T hurt.
Thompson's steal could have been huge, but he fouled.
Just not our night.
Garrett still playing hero ball and doing his best
Mike Powell imitation.
I so wanted Earl to show Hurley he was wrong. He didn't, unfortunately.
Not to sound like our koolaide drinkers, but this team did show heart
and never quit.
I'm going to the Brown game with the crew.

I agree, that was one hell of a trapping defense. Was actually one of the most positive things I've seen them do this year. You know they had to have been practicing it to be that effective at it. Let's see more of that...earlier...why get behind first? Looks like offense is limited...go with that tenacious full court D....

That's the spirit, RFC! Where is the pre-gamer?

We might have to if Hassan is out for a while.

We'll be behind more often.

Maybe playing that will spark them into pushing the ball more often.

It seemed to wake Terrell up. He doesn't play when he's standing around.

The faster we play, the better he plays.

Maybe we'll revert to the "scrappy but crappy" style that kept us in games a couple years back, although with more talent.

Have to find something that makes up for our shooting issues.

And Rod is on to something. We shot FT's much better tonight. Is that due to playing on the road, with more friendly rims?

What are you drinking? I want some of that!
Our three starting guards shoot 33% again. We are a poor shooting team.
Our Jr leader does nothing again in a key road game (sat with fouls against Neb and tonight with injury)
Our transfer forward is very inconsistent offensively.
Our defense gave up another 50+%. We are not a good defensive team.

This team will not come close to last year's team.

It's hard to watch a loss like this and still feel like complimenting the play of the team in this game.

There were definitely highlights, especially without Martin. Keep on Keepin' On...what else is there to do?

Akele, Thompson, and Iverson were very disruptive on defense. Play Akele more, press a little more (if Hassan is OK). Probably not enough depth but it created offensive opportunities. Gutty comeback. Good effort but still a loss. Probably should rest Hassan for A10 play.

It seems like every time we leave someone open, they nail the shot.

It's a bad streak. These guys that are beating us aren't as good as some of the guards we'll face in the A10.

They just can't miss.

We on the other hand can't make an open shot, or if we do, we can hardly ever make 2 in a row.....

That in a nutshell is the difference. Our defense isn't terrible, just that our opponents are shooting better from distance than inside.

We keep saying we have more talent than most of the teams that are beating us. How can that be? They can shoot, and we can't.

Other than the ONE game that Four made 6 threes, how many times have we had a guy get hot from the field?

Our guards, as someone just pointed out, consistently shoot in the low/mid 30's every game. With not much of an inside game, that will get you beat way more often than not.

Our press got us back in tonight's game, and if we could shoot, we would have won it. Have to take advantage of every opportunity when you're down, but we can't finish.

Hard to have a lot of faith after that game.
Others have said many things I am thinking -- Garrett doing the Mike Powell. Terrell and Iverson too up and down. Earl is what he is, a good role player.
Losing Hassan obviously hurt, but Iona just took us to the brink with their second string. We played from behind 6-12 points for 35 minutes against an average mid major team. I dont care how many home wins over East Carolina and UAB they have.
I agree with others, a pressing style defense that forces turnover and uptempo seems more suited to the skill sets of the guys we have.
Something has to change and quick or this is going to go from one of the most anticipated seasons since 99 to one of the biggest bust seasons.

Also, at this point this season can only be special by catching fire in the A10 or Brooklyn, so I would start giving some of Four's minutes to Thompson and Akele pronto and have half an eye towards next year. Four is 0 for the season with that runner, and if he isn't hitting 3's at above 40% his deficiencies in other parts of the game make him a liability.

I might be wrong, but if he did that and they won the title, then we have too many players.
What does duke do if they get guys hurt?
2 injuries and a dq aren't really that rare.
Duke would just go with 5 players?
I mean, it's year 4. There aren't any sanctions.

We may have better decathlete type athletes...but every team played so far...seems to have at least two guys that can shoot it better than anyone on this team? ...which, actually makes this team's competitiveness even more remarkable.

Didn't read this whole thread, so no idea what the general feeling is. I had a bunch of stuff going on tonight, so I followed the game on the ESPN app on my phone. In the first half, we gave up 50% fg shooting, at a point late in the half were being outrebounded 2:1, and they had attempted twice as many FTs as we did. It seemed like the game was careening toward blowout city, but I was at least happy we fought them to the end, which is what I hoped for at halftime - to make a game of it.

Against my expectations coming into the season, this was another disappointing loss in a so-far disappointing campaign. I didn't think we would win this game before it tipped, though, so maybe my expectations have finally recalibrated themselves without me knowing. Maybe this season will be more enjoyable (or at least tolerable) if I flush my preseason expectations and just view this team as what they are: an undermanned unit that is not the most skilled but generally fights hard. They are good kids worth rooting for. Selfishly, I wanted more than that this season, but it looks like that is going to have to wait.

We simply lack true scorers....all the heart in th world but offensively just not good enough. No post game and can't shoot makes it difficult to best good teams. We need transition buckets and for our defense to trigger offense....not easy to do. We are all heart with a lot of good athletes.

I should say we are on an alright arc. I think it takes experience. Most URI good teams have that. Next year they will be very experienced. Freshmen class I love this year in Akele and CT. Next year continues that and eventually the Rams will be a mature team.

Mature teams win. They are consistent.

Maturity would help, but a real "shooter" would help, too. Someone you can count on to knock down a mid-range jump shot or even a three. They could have all seniors, but you have to have someone that can shoot.

Am just hoping they can extend their already really good man to man D full court for more of the game, create some easy opportunities...and make it really interesting in Brooklyn.

As for the scholarship count,
you're allowed 13.
Stanley Robinson is sitting out. Oneykaba is gone, but
still on scholarship. EC is out.
I think they were counting Hassan not being able to
play, so there's your four scholarship players
not playing for various reasons.
Leaves nine.

Oh, we actually played a zone for a minute or so.
That's when ODU hit a couple of deep shots, and that
was it.
Zones need work to perfect.

Agree with most of the sentiments here. I was hot right after the game, but cooled off a bit quicker than I expected. I think my expectations are finally cooling off and the reality is setting in. Someone said it in an earlier post, but we just are who we are right now. I genuinely like these players...they showed a lot of guts tonight and fought like hell in the second half, but unfortunately it wasn't enough. Just sucks to always feel like we're on the cusp of something, but can never quite put it all together. The endless c*ck tease with this program. Martin tweaking the ankle and sitting tonight is just another kick to the balls.

I agree the press looked good, and it would be nice to see more of it, but at what cost? While it may net us a few more baskets (which we all know are a hot commodity for us these days), I feel like you may see our offense drag even worse down the stretch. It takes a lot of stamina to press with the intensity needed to produce turnovers, and if you're not prepared to go deeper than 8 guys, I can all but guarantee your guys will run out of gas by the end of the game. Not to mention every one of those 8 guys need to be able to play that style, and I would argue Earl and Four are not fit for it. Maybe pick a few more spots to use it, but not consistently throughout the game.

Was upset Earl didn't step up a bit more tonight. Four disappointing once again. More missed FTs from him, especially on a night when everyone else was knocking them down. Infuriating, and unacceptable for his role. JT answered the call, saw at least a few offensive boards from him. But yeah, it is really uncanny how his leaping ability off one foot is almost impaired. My god, if he could finish better he'd drop 20 a game easy. Even JG looks to have limited spring on his drives. Anyhoo, that's all I got for now. Could this team make a run? Certainly possible, but not likely in my opinion. Would love to be proved wrong tho.

ps. I am a Met fan as well, so used to the heartache. I was still a bit too young to fully enjoy '86, and been tortured ever since. F just being happy to be in the series this year. Had our opps to win the whole shebang, but couldn't shut the door when needed. Eerily similar to another program I follow closely! A few Giant SB's is all I have to hang my hat on, and those are quickly becoming a distant memory. Another team full of late game collapses this year! Ugh! I digress. Time for bed.

Yeah, I think everybody's eyes are wide open as to what we have with this team, shorthanded or not.

Good kids, play hard, but missing some of the things needed to be really good.

I think Dan realizes that more shooters are needed. Thompson and Akele may turn out to be the best on the team in that regard, so that's a step in the right direction.

Maybe Dowtin can help.

Some of the kids we are chasing for '17 seem like they can light it up also.....

At least with EC back next year we'll have someone who can finish at the rim.

Only thing that matters now is the medical report on Hass. Probably win that game if he could have played as he was getting ball down low early and seemed to score easily.

I am forcing myself, and it is not easy, to accept that season will come down to a few unexpected wins where Four gets in a zone and shoots lights out. Maybe a game or two where the defense, trapping from the locker room, will create some offense. But lacking the bench depth to sustain that style for 40 minutes. Coaches, coach to win, and having not even started the conference schedule, I don't see Dan going to a lineup where the freshmen get major minutes to develop them further anytime soon. If Hass is out for some games, those games, regardless of who we play, we be difficult. With all that said, I will hang in there, support the players who do work hard, cheer the successful moments in the freshmen growth. If we settle into a middle of the conference pack, upset someone along the way, get to Brooklyn, pray for lightning in a bottle, I will find comfort there.....Next Year(cha-ching) I will guard against any lofty expectations/predictions, with EC back, freshmen that become sophs, maybe more shooters on board, and continued unknowns, etc; to a show me first...... Did I ever think I would have been reduced to this approach, especially before any league games were played, when Dan Hurley walked into Keaney for his introduction.....no.

105, correct. What other choice do we have?

Besides the unfortunate injuries, what we were led to believe coming into this season was simply not real. The talent level simply doesn't match that, and that's the biggest disappointment to me.

Rather have lower expectations and surprise, than the other way around.

Going forward, that's what will happen from this viewpoint.

If there are torn ligaments, he's done for the season. Those are worse than a break. I know, I tore everything playing hoops a long time ago, and I'm still paying for it.

What really sucks is that if he's done, he can't redshirt at this point.

Going to just have to play out the season, take our lumps, and hope that everything goes right next season.

For once.
