Kelly Dobbins - URI Commit
ESPNBoston.com felt compelled enough to type up a brief write-up on 2013 URI commit Kelly Dobbins, so I figured I'd post it here.

Re: Kelly Dobbins - URI Commit
They had a whole bunch of recruits on campus today. Several highly recruited kids too and they were hoping to get at least 3-4 of them committed today. I wonder if he was one of them.

For Rhody football fans (all three of you), the network I blog for is doing a big push for National Signing Day, so expect to see a lot of info/bios/etc. on the site on Wednesday. I'll try to bring as much info as I can gather.

Re: Kelly Dobbins - URI Commit
We need recruits to play right away - red shirting will only continue our downward slide. One would hope that there are some players who can play immediately knowing that the competition right now is not there.

Re: Kelly Dobbins - URI Commit
Neil-yes,that is one thing Rhody can sell=chance to play right away.
But,I doubt most frosh can play right away (size/strength/skills).
I bet you see a lot of JUCO's and prep schoolers because of this.
Not an easy answer. Will be seeing the president and Coach Rizzi tonight, let you know what I glean.

President Dooley.
Pres. said school is studying UNH model closely as they are very successful in FB under trying circumstances.
Said asst. coaches salaries can be increased by guarantee games. Says URI has very attractive slate in the works.
Feels SADC will be big boost and the $2.2M needed for field turf and lights @ Meade is doable within 2 years.
Wants to hold all HS state championships there.
Coach Rizzi said URI an easy sell so long as all things equal.
Big plans for baseball facilities under way in conjunction with a summer league of some sort.
Pres. said basketball can pay for itself for 8 years with one run to elite 8.

Re: Kelly Dobbins - URI Commit
It's encouraging to know that there are at least people thinking about this stuff other than on this board. I'm not convinced that was always the case. I think Dooley was a great hire, and that is only a little bit because of how important athletics are to him.
Hopefully NSD will be as good to Rhody football as it will be to my Domers (relatively speaking, of course).

Re: Kelly Dobbins - URI Commit
That is really encouraging news. Thank you for the report. It good to see they are putting effort towards the football team. One question though...Who is Coach Rizzi? I am relatively new to URI sports and am just curious who that is and what his position is?Hal Kopp wrote:President Dooley.

Well, if Maine and UNH are successful in football, we should be able to be.

Was wondering the same. I think maybe it was a brain fart and he meant Trainer?RAM67 wrote:Coach Rizzi?

Coach: one who instructs or trains <an acting coach>; especially: one who instructs players in the fundamentals of a sport and directs team strategy <a football coach>.
I'll give a pass to Frenchy, hope the rest of you are kidding when you say don't know who Coach Rizzi is.
Think as in terms of Coach Harrick,Coach Penders,Coach Griffin,Coach Kopp,etc.. A gold star for the first one who gets it!

Re: Kelly Dobbins - URI Commit
Rizzi was the coach before trainer that the Dolphins grabbed from us after 1 season to be their special teams coordinator, Trainer is the current coach. I would assume he meant Trainer since he is the current coach and I'm not sure why Rizzi would be back here since he was only here for 1 year

Re: Kelly Dobbins - URI Commit
Dooley and Thorr were in Miami recently for some event where Rizzi was also invited. They talked.
You never know, maybe Rizzi would come back if the situation was right? How much more could he be making there instead of here? He's a lower level coach, special teams.
Maybe if these improvements are made to the program, and Trainor moves on for whatever reason, then the job becomes attractive enough to lure him back? I'm sure they'd love to have him back. Good to keep your options open, just in case?

Re: Kelly Dobbins - URI Commit
If BB can pay for itself for 8 years with ONE run to the Elite 8, just think what several trips to the big Dance would do! As long as we advance at least a round or two in some of them.
Are they counting on this to happen? Then Hurley needs to stay for a while at least!
After Dan and co. leave, who knows what will happen here? Hopefully the foundation will be laid, to keep good coaches coming here like Temple, X, etc.
We want short term success of course, but long term is just as important, if not more so. I think now, that as long as Dooley stays, we'll be OK. It does look like he's committed to building and maintaining something here. Let's really hope so.
It's all going to depend on money. Win, the money will come, and URI will be able to pay for good coaches and facilities. And winning needs to start happening next year, for BB at least, and then FB soon after. And that will benefit all the other sports here.

At least it's beginning to look like more talented recruits are coming here.
Going to take at least 2-3 years to get back to where they were 2 years ago, competitive again.

That's unfortunate. Speaking of QB's... Do you think there will be a lot of competition at QB this year? Or will it be Bob's offense?

Adam Parker, Taft, LB, 5-11, 220: Rhode Island
Here is another commit.
Bentsen needs some competition. Kid from Md. looks good, but a frosh..
Bob had a rough year in '12.

Yes I agree. Maybe Danny Fenyak can give him some competition in the spring. I was just checking out the 2013 Spring Roster, and it looks like we only have 2 RB's currently. What happened to Assani Mudimbi? Anyone know?

Re: Kelly Dobbins - URI Commit
Rizzi is a URI alum, so it's not outside the realm of possibility that he might be at an event with Dooley and Thorr.
