Re: ARD To Join Hurley's Staff
The silver lining is that this is another step in program building - ARD is one of our own. A beloved player, an overachiever and an all time great. All great companies and programs grow from within, we don't have a ton of former players in the coaching fraternity so it is certainly a great moment to have one of those rare few come back to lead a new era in Rhody hoops. ARD can also be part of a succession plan, and while Grasso may have been a splashier hire in the short term, for true Rhody fans ARD was the better hire towards building a program that endures. Hassan hit the lottery today.

Re: ARD To Join Hurley's Staff
Great Hire!!!
This is what I'm talking about right here when I write about the program's arch. And why I trust DH to get the job done, like I've stated in the past, I get to make observations about the current state of the program without it being negative because I believe that DH is as smart as he is enthusiastic and ethical. My frustrations and/or observations in the past about lack of focus on post play were usually stated with the caveat that I see a greater arch for our program and I understand it is a..... yes wait for it........ a.... PROCESS.
I think until now it was fair to question what we have besides PT to lure the better of the post players to our program and that is not an indictment on any current or former staff's ability to coach up bigs. It's a comment about perceptions, how are recruits and casuals perceiving what could be gained as a power forward by coming to Rhody? I'm more than thrilled about this hire, but it doesn't change my expectations because I believe DH will continue to craft a top notch program. Count me among those who love ARD, for that reason I really hope this is a perfect fit and even setting that aside my more rational mind says it is will be a perfect fit.

Re: ARD To Join Hurley's Staff
ARD brings to this staff an ASST who won't take less than a full effort every time out, just like the head coach. I never noticed the asst's we had last year really getting into it. They were more like robots. He was a true warrior and probably got more out of his 6'5" body than any player who has ever played here. I love this move for two reasons. the first I already mentioned and the second is he is one of us and understands the love that we all have for this school. He knows you can be successful here and will bring that every day to practice with these kids.

He was more like 6'7" or 6'8", but I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments. ARD was my all-time favorite Ram not because of his overall talent level, but because he played with such tenacity and determination and hustle...fun player to watch. Adding a guy of his caliber to our coaching staff can only lead to good things in my opinion. Glad to have you back, ARD!Rhodyhooopz wrote:ARD brings to this staff an ASST who won't take less than a full effort every time out, just like the head coach. It was being mentioned on the Coaching Carousel thread. I wonder if his decision to make the move was an indictment of what the situation at BC is like or if he felt that this was a great opportunity that he couldn't pass upsteviep123 wrote:Anyone notice Preston is now an assistant at Creighton?

The only bad part of the hire is that every article that mentions it is also a reminder of just how long it's been since the last tournament appearance for this program. I'd say that changes this season, though.

Re: ARD To Join Hurley's Staff
Just the facts, ma'am.
Recruiting and tutoring the next frontcourt standout at URI will be Reynolds-Dean’s primary responsibilities.
“In recruiting I always tell parents, ‘It’s hard to send your 6-foot-9 kid to a place where he’s getting coached by a guy who’s 5-foot-10 who never played in the post,’” Reynolds-Dean said. “It’s a totally different dynamic.”

Re: ARD To Join Hurley's Staff
1) Rod, you are nuts but it has nothing to do with that line from ARD.
2) The height of the coach has nothing to do with the ability of the coach. Pete Newell (Pete Newell's Big Man Camp?) was 6'2" tall. At Wisconsin, Frank Kaminsky, Jon Leuer, Greg Stiemsma, Nigel Hayes, etc. have been primarily developed by an assistant named Gary Close. Rod...you could post him up.
http://www.uwbadgers.com/sports/m-baskb ... 82329.html
3) ARD is using that line as a recruiting hook/shtick. But it has no basis in reality.

Re: ARD To Join Hurley's Staff
Good, you go up to ARD and tell him he's full of shit.
How's that?
While you're at it, go tell John Thompson Sr. that Ewing, Mutombo and Morning
didn't play for him, because he could relate to big men.
Oh, and Close is mostly known as a shooting coach, not a big man coach.
Read the article you posted. Not one word about coaching bigs.

Re: ARD To Join Hurley's Staff
When Pete Newell developed his basketball skills 6'2" was a lot closer to the average post players height than it is now, IMO he was skilled at coaching post play because he identified with post players, in turn post players identified with him. In a way our coaches have been guard centric recently which I'm totally cool with, but we (I, not speaking for others) are happy to strike a better balance in what our staff can offer PFs coming in and how it should translate into better offense/balance to have a good coach that identifies with post players on staff.
Go Rhody!!!

This is the most insane argument ever, Elmer Fudd aka Bill B is the guru of all coaching right now. What the hell does he know about being 6'5 and 250 pounds yet he still manages to coach a fine defense.

Belichick has a great defensive mind. Not sure when that day will be.
Dan and family just moved into their new home,
and Andrea said she's never moving again.
Then again, Sally Harrick said the same thing........
As for Preston, he's told me that his number one career goal is
to become head coach at URI someday.
I know there are many people at URI who share his wish.
He could be our Ed Cooley. A guy who always wanted the job and
will not be looking to better deal himself.
Preston and ARD are very close, so I could see ARD becoming Associate Head Coach
under PMurph.
However, for the foreseeable future, we have a coach, whose job
is far from completed, and is building a program to be proud of.

Every assistant coach, worth his salt, has a dream to become a head coach, especially at his alma mater. Preston's and A R-D's first steps to that goal is to become a head coach elsewhere to prove that they can successfully do the job.
Here, with us, they have the cachet. Elsewhere and with "outsiders," they don't.

Re: ARD To Join Hurley's Staff
In college basketball, things seem to happen very quickly,
as any URI fan can attest.
We have been very fortunate to have had Bobby,
Preston and now ARD on staff.
Bobby seems born to greatness, Preston is moving upward
in his career, and is highly respected, and ARD is given his chance to shine, here.
When I think of CFL's staffs, I think of Skerry, and most everyone else
seems a blur.
Technically, Dan already has a Pac 10 and NEC head coach in his coaching tree.
Pretty good for a guy who hasn't been a head coach for very long.

Late to the party - but... YES. I love Antonio Reynolds-Dean. Suit him up and make bigs cover him & battle him in practice early on. Great addition to the staff. A team with a bunch of guys with his work ethic and common sense will do great things.
