I'm sure the Pistons had more bigs that we do.
Carmelo. The Arod of the NBA. Great stats in the regular season.
Never won anything, no matter where he plays.
At least Arod won one World Series.

What concerns me the most is when the PA announcer screams FOUR, do we all have to duck?

Four needs to break the record for four point plays in a season for us.

That piece makes an interesting point in that while some have worried that the step up from the CAA to the A10 might be difficult for him, he is going to go from being the primary weapon that defenses focused on to be a complimentary piece that they could forget about.

So now that the guys leaving is known, it's almost like maybe the staff knew what they were doing when they brought in McGlynn! Funny how that works out, there are all of a sudden more minutes to be had for a backup guard.

How about that, Adam? They were also clearly looking to keep the name game elevated, knowing they were going to lose guys named Jarelle Reischel and Biggie.

It's easy to forget, I suppose, that the staff may not always immediately tip all their cards.

That's a very solid point on the name game, it's an important aspect that can't be overlooked. I'm already tired of all the Steve McDonald Four jokes though...ace wrote:How about that, Adam? we've been seriously lacking in the name game lately. I will miss Jarelle Reischel and the ability to reference "Rochelle, Rochelle."

Re: Four McGlynn Tranfers to URI from Towson
Agree TP. I was the biggest supporter of _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ since his last year in HS, through all his years here at URI. But this ship has sailed. Very surprised this name is coming up as even I have moved on after his having not stuck it out 2 days before the season started. Too bad because he would have seen a lot of playing time at the 5, Biruta could have played his normal position and Martin would have been able to play his normal position. To me _ _ _ _ was a significant loss to this team but it's over people. Does not matter any more.TruePoint wrote:I admittedly have not seen a lot of Four, but if he is not considerably better than Matthew Butler, why the hell would we use a scholarship on him? There is not one cell in my body that believes Matt Butler is a 12 ppg game in the CAA. I think this guy is a far better player that Butler or we wouldn't have brought him in.DeanDome88 wrote:I look at this guy as a Matt Butler type who will pull the trigger when he is open. His free throw shooting is also a big plus for the end of games. We need a good guard off the bench.rodfromcranston wrote:If this guy came from a solid D-1 conference and faced
solid competition every night, I'd have felt better.
Playing against Elon, Delaware, Charleston, Wm & Mary and the
UNC Wilmington's of the world, is a far cry from what he'll
be facing in the A-10, or the OOC schedule.
To think competition level is meaningless, and he can do pretty much
the same at a higher level, seems short sighted, to me.
Jordan Hare is not walking through that door. He will never play for URI again.

Re: Four McGlynn Tranfers to URI from Towson
Many of the complaints here have been about URI needed to go after a big, and this signing does not adress that.Billyboy78 wrote:From Chris...

Towson transfer Four McGlynn to @RhodyMBB. 12ppg, 39% 3pt. 91.7% from stripe. Talked 2 a CAA Coach about him...next tweets are what he said:
Chris DiSano @CDiSano44
CAA coach on McGlynn "He can really shoot it. Will provide good punch for URI off bench. He doesn't create, but doesn't turn it over either"
CAA coach on McGlynn (2) - "Find him in transition spotting up or he'll burn u. His adjustment will be getting in sync on D, way URI plays."
Not that Jarelle, Biggie and Matt have been announced this can be looked at a bit differently simply because of the timing of events.
Have to believe that Hurley and Co, knew there would be at least 3 additional spots open for next year when they recruited Four.
Why I like addition of Four:
- 91.7% FT shooting http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketb ... asontype/2
122-133 FT Shooting makes him basically automatic
- 55 for 147 for 37.4% on 3FG, while shooting 71 for 174 for 40.8% previous year. Towson was not a good team last year (Skerry not on the upward spiral he once was) so Four would have more pressure on him - they did not have a good point guard to get him the ball
- Brings maturity to the team. Losing Biruta and TJ will hurt as both were captains. Four being a Grad Student 5th year adds some experience
- Watching the Iona game we moved the ball as well as I have seen all year. Passed inside and back out again beautifully. Put Four on the court with that kind of passing and Garrett, Jarad, EC and others will find him open - probably more so than the guys at Towson would have
- Gives us a threat late in the game. We all know the players are looking for EC late to take the shot, and EC is looking too. With 4 they will have to cover him because of his deadly shooting eye - will help to space the floor better. EC, Jared and Garrett can all shoot the 3 and they will as expected continue to improve from 3, but add Four and we now have guys who would be legit threats to hit a 3 at teh end of the half or at the end of the game.
Four is simply an upgrade to the roster.
What were some of the biggest issues from the past year?
1. Free throw shooting - certainly Four is an improvement here. Could it be that he even helps others on the team to improve as well?
2. 3FG shooting - his 37% last year, 40% as a Junior exceed anyone we currently have. His dealy FT accuracy says he may even shoot better on 3FG if our guys can get him the ball in better shooting position than the Towson guys did
3. Experience - Starting 2 Freshmen and 2 Sophomores (2 very young Sophs). Four can come in and be a steadying influence.
Not making him out to be All A10 or even have a starting role at URI, not at all, but simply from a Roster upgrade I like it, especially with how it addresses some of our weak areas from last year.

Re: Four McGlynn Tranfers to URI from Towson
In a general reply to those who did not like that I compared him to Matthew Butler, I will just point out that I compared him favorably to Mr. Butler. I do however, see them similar in stature, projected role and athleticism. Four has shown that he can fill the shooter role for the past 3 years and is really strong from the line which will help immensely in close games against teams trying to extend the game by fouling.

I agree, ramster. I was also always very positive about He Who Shalt Not Be Named. But that all disappeared rather quickly for me when he left the program again last fall.

Re: Four McGlynn Tranfers to URI from Towson
Look at the kids first year at Towson and you will see how i suspect Hurley would like to sue him.
85% of shots attempted from 3 point range where he made over 40%. Far less turnovers because hes not trying to do stuff with the ball offsetting a mild drop in assist/reb/ppg.
Based on that year we know he can handle and excel in that role.

Four McGlynn signed his financial aid agreement today, so he's officially part of the program. The following write up from gorhody.com has a profile on him and some quotes from Hurley.

Re: Four McGlynn Tranfers to URI from Towson
I think Four could have a big impact off the bench. This is why he'll being play a lot at the end of close games:
Connected on all 13 of his free throw attempts, scoring 22 points versus UMBC
Sealed a victory over Morgan State, connecting on 6-of-6 from the charity stripe over the final 3:48 of play
