Hassan just doesn't get the big hype.

Rod: There's something to say for that argument. I think if he was higher in the conference in rebounding (he's 7th) he'd have a better chance. To go from nothing in pre-season vote to second team would be quite an accomplishment.

100%. If you had to bet your house on a game and had to take five A-10 players, you'd be insane not to take Martin. It drove me crazy last night that the color guy kept saying EC was Rhody's best player. EC has the highest usage rate in the A-10. Doesn't make him the best player.rodfromcranston wrote:Martin is a better more impactful player on both ends

I'd love to see EC and Hassan on the 1st and 2nd teams, but I think it will be EC-2nd, and Hassan-3rd.
Terrell will get on the all rookie team.
URI still doesn't get the respect that others get.
That will all change next season.

Iggy,
I think you might consider Junior Shevon Thompson on one of these teams, my guess is 2nd team.
Consider he is the only A10 player averaging a double - double on the season, plus a high FG%
1st Rebounding with a dominating 11.7 rpg and 1.9 rpg ahead of 2nd place Ndoye
3rd FG% 58%
10th Blocks 1.1 bpg
15th Scoring 13.1 ppg

Would be awesome. He may go NBA after just this one year, especially if Hewitt gets canned as expected.rambone 78 wrote:Ramster, imagine if we had Thompson on our team this year...we'd be making Dance plans without a doubt....
Thompson is probably the biggest surprise new addition to the A10 this year - heck of a player with legit NBA potential

If Hassan averaged say, 14.5-16 ppg, he'd have a better chance.
11.7 ppg. is not going to grab the attention of voters who seem to
pay attention to points more than any other factor.

Weber needs to be there somewhere since he would've set the NCAA steals record. First team? I think that's too high since he only played 2/3rds of the season. You could make an argument for second team.

I think Bembry had the best year, but St. Joe's didn't so that hurts him a lot. VCU's fade could hurt Graham. Maybe Siebert.

Re: All Atlantic 10
I love EC, he's going to be a much better player next year. I think he needed to learn how to play with great expectations that were placed on him. He was being rumored as a first round NBA pick before the season started. That had to be an immense amount of pressure to play under. He also was expected to replace X as the go to option and he has struggled with that throughout the course of the season.
As for first team A10, I'm not sure he is deserving. His turnovers were alarming and at times his defense was very suspect. It all depends on the voters and how much they just look at stats, as well noted in this thread, Hassan Martin was far and away our best and most consistent player this season.

X was older, played for Hurley at St. Benedict's, went
through the juco meat grinder.
He was top gun from day one. Accepted his role, and
nothing bothered him.
I think the burden of being first option has not sat well
with EC. I think his idea of what that means has messed him
up and now, his injury only makes things worse.
I don't think he's had a good year overall.
All the hype, such as we heard Tuesday, is over the top.
He needs to get healthy next year, work on his right hand,
and relax a bit. Maybe enjoy the game with less pressure.
He'll have others who can take shots. Terrell and Garrett will be a year older,
Iverson and Thompson will be added firepower.
Forget the point guard stuff and just play the game.

How about All Freshman Team and All Defense Team and Player of the Year?
For Freshman I'll guess:
Terrell URI
Paschal Fordham
Larrier VCU
Sengfelder Fordham
Watanabe St Bonaventure
POY is between Bembry and Kalinowski but I go with Kalinowski since Davidson looks like they will win the A10 - I like the POY coming from the Conference Champion

Excellent Job,
Freshmen
I agree with not including Paschall on any of the 3 teams or on the All Freshman Team. I am not sure the A10 Coaches will go that way but I agree.
I also agree on Sengfelder being Freshman of the Year. I would not call it Rookie because if that was the case then I would have to give it to Shevon Thompson - but think you are right with this pick.
Do you think Terrell has a shot at Freshman of the Year? Fact that URI exceeded expectations from being picked preseason 6th and will end up likely 3rd should say something for Terrell.
- Terrell is ranked 4th in FT% at 83.3% hitting 35 of 42
- Terrell ranks 7th in Steals with 1.9 spg
- Not bad for a Freshman - performance of his team, just the fact that he could grap a starting spot from Day 1 on the #3 team says a lot
- Unfortunately Paschall could sneak onto this team, and they might even be dumb enough to give him Freshman of the year - hope not
POY and 1st Team
I think you are right on Bembry, however Sibert could sneak in and grab it since Dayton will likely come in 2nd
My pick for POY is Kalinoski, my case:
- 5th in PPG 16.4
- 20th in Rebounding 5.6
- 1st in Assists 4.2
- 2nd in FT 83.7%
- 9th in Steals1.5
- 10th in 3FG 38.7%
- 4th in 3FG made 2.4
- 2nd Assists/Turnover Ratio 2.5
But biggest reason for Kalinoski is he has been the best, most consistent player for Davidson. Davidson was picked 12th by A10 Coaches and 13th or 14th by many publications. They will likely win the A10 today. I would say that Kalinoski has done it all for Davidson and even stepped up further and carried the team when their PG got injured and was out for 7 games.
For sure I would have Kalinoski on 1st team
EC Mathews and Martin both on 2nd team
I might also have Graham on 2nd team, Martin or EC on 1st team
I also like your pick of Sullivan on 3rd team - another guy who really stepped up when Gibbs went out for Davidson. In addition to Kalinoski on 1st team I might even move Sullivan up to 2nd team.
Agree with:
- Defensive team
- COY
- 6th Man
- Most improved
We will soon if the A10 Coaches are as capable in picking. My fear is that they are not - and will go more with the "name" guys versus the actual performances

Re: All Atlantic 10
Davidson with an impressive dismantling of Duquesne on the road no less to show why they are the Champs of the A10.
IMHO Kalinoski took another step towards being selected 1st team and quite possibly A10 POY.
12-14 FG
8-10 on 3 point FG
5 Rebounds
9 assists
Jack Gibbs also a perfect 7-7 FG including 5-5 on 3 point FGs. He would be an All A10 selection if he had not missed 7 A10 games with a knee injury.

Re: All Atlantic 10
Kalinoski was an unrated recruit by most services coming out of Kansas in 2011 and had only one scholarship offer in addition to Davidson (Jacksonville). Great job scouting by Davidson's staff to find a guy in the middle of nowhere that would fit perfectly with their system. Incredible that he will be the A10 player of the year (and I believe he should be).

Re: All Atlantic 10
From K Mac this morning. Have to respect Martelli for his comments about Bembry for POY. But obviously he would disagree with Bembry being left off the 1st Team.
K Mac had it: Bembry, Mathews, Kalinoski, Sibert and Graham. Difference being that Pierre of Dayton is not on 1st team and Bembry is.
of course, A10 could go the way of the NBE and have 7 guys on 1st team (due to a tie). Dunn and Henton both made it from PC.
http://www.providencejournal.com/articl ... 1612882843
A-10 selections to come
One coach who clearly "gets it" is Saint Joseph’s Phil Martelli. He may have the best player in the Atlantic 10 in DeAndre Bembry (17.9 ppg, 7.8 rebs.) but the coach deflected any thoughts that the sophomore should be considered for any Player of the Year mention.
“He’s had a brilliant year,” Martelli said, “and I’m his coach and I love that kid. But the player of the year plays on the best team. Whatever they vote, you’re not going to hear a peep from me. I’ve told my team that. If we’re having a normal year, he’s an All-American, not just all-league.”
The A-10 selections don’t come out until later this week. Look for Bembry, Dayton’s Jordan Sibert, Davidson’s Tyler Kalinoski, VCU’s Treveon Graham and URI’s E.C. Matthews. We’d go with Sibert over the red-hot Kalinoski in a close call.

Bembry is terrific and is a no-brainer for first team. I don't think he is POY, though, for the same reason I didn't think ARod was the MVP on a last place Rangers team.

Re: All Atlantic 10
if not Bembry, then who?
the eye test has him as the best of the bunch. St Joe's is a middle of the pack A10 team that would just be lousy without him. Believing the team has to get to a certain level for an individual player of the team to be regarded as the best is illogical (channeling my inner volcan)
At least for me the query is who do I think is the best of the best in the A10, not who do I believe will be selected, which of course is a very different conversation.

I think Kalinoski gets it. Davidson wins the A10 when most predicted Davidson to finish 12th, 13th or dead last at 14 in their first year in the A10.
Kalinoski was the best player on the team and carried them when Gibbs went out for 7 games with the meniscus knee injury.
Best player on the best team in the A10

Re: All Atlantic 10
Getting Gibbs back when they did, saved Davidson, in terms of an NCAA bid.
On one hand, if he doesn't get hurt, they're even more impressive than they were.
However, if he doesn't come back in time, they lose a couple more, especially to us.
Gotta get the breaks. They did, VCU didn't.
Also winning the conference and being an NCAA lock now helps Kalinoski get the POY.
Without that happening, he probably doesn't.

Re: All Atlantic 10
the way VCU hit the skids shows that Weber is the POY to me. Havoc has disappeared without him.

Re: All Atlantic 10
This viewpoint drives me nuts. Where do you draw the line? 7th place, 8th place? Only taking teams that win the league? Or make NCAAs? The valuable in MVP is a semantics discussion that blowhard sportswriters use in look at me columns. Every person on every team has value. And this is Player of the Year. Not MVP. It should be the best player in the league. In my mind, it's the first guy you would take in a game of 5 on 5 if you lined every A10 player up. It's not always the best player on a winner.TruePoint wrote:Bembry is terrific and is a no-brainer for first team. I don't think he is POY, though, for the same reason I didn't think ARod was the MVP on a last place Rangers team.

Eric paschal as rookie of the year? I'd take his teammate on Fordham over him. Sorry but I don't even see Paschal as first team all rookie. Speaking offense only possibly but throw in the defense and no.

I had the same first team as Nolan and KMac.

Bleacher Report has put out their regular season awards. E.C. Matthews was named first team A-10.

Re: All Atlantic 10
If it was Most VALUABLE Player, it would have to be
Briante Webber, hands down.
VCU collapsed after he went out, and HVOC became
a passe term.
The best player is Bembry, and should be POY.
Is there confusion as to the criteria on this award?
