Football signing day.
We are a few weeks away from signing day for football, anyone have an idea what kind of recruits coach Flemming is looking at or getting? Also any idea on early enrolled recruits?

Re: Football signing day.
Good info! This is a big year but so isnt every year for URI. I'm hoping for 5-6 wins but that's gonna be awful tough. This is his 2nd recruiting class so things have to look up or as we all know it could be the end.

Re: Football signing day.
Twisted, probable. Right now there are 3 signed with Desilva pending?
Am not being facetious, but Rhodys qb play has been so bad for past few years,6 would be the right # to sign!! That position is killing them.

Re: Football signing day.
I find it interesting most players signed are skill type players. I don't know the current roster makeup but it looks like a concerted effort to get faster and more athletic. Only one big O lineman signed from the list.

Based on what I've seen over the past couple of years, we need help in a lot of areas. Here's hoping one of the quarterbacks becomes a legit CAA player. Last year was not very pretty.

Re: Football signing day.
6 Qbs? 1 of them has to be good. At least 3 of them will be moved to another position. The one thing that stands out is the size of these kids. FINALY. Sad to see your D-line look so small against other teams O-line. Now coaches have to coach them up and we will see. Might seem like baby steps but I feel like at least they are steps going foreward and not backwards.

Re: Football signing day.
Not all 5 QBs will play QB obviously. WR/DB is the most likely landing place for those who don't make it onto the depth chart as a QB. My money would be on DeSilva and Paul Mroz being the two competing for the job.

Re: Football signing day.
At the press conference they mentioned for one of the guys (think it was an OL or DL) that they told him a month ago they didn't have a spot for him. Then a spot freed up and they signed the kid up. Maybe that was Favreau's spot?

Re: Football signing day.
How does URI assemble a 20 player class and Bryant assembles a 38 player class? What am I missing Bill Koch? Can you ask that question? Thanks

Re: Football signing day.
The NCAA rules establish scholarship limits for sports, including football. FBS football is limited to 85 scholarships; FCS to 63 scholarships. At either level, you can have no more than 30 "initial counters" (recruits, basically). Additionally, the NEC imposes its own scholarship limit (formerly 34 but I believe it is now 40). However, FCS is an "equivalency" sport, meaning that a program can distribute X scholarships among X+ athletes by giving partial scholarships (so two athletes on half-scholarships would count as one scholarship). Anyone receiving aid is a "counter."
So Bryant could not have "signed" 38 players yesterday, in the way that word is commonly understood. First, there is no way that it had 38 of its 40 scholarships available. Second, even if it was using equivalencies (giving players partial scholarships), they are still limited to 30 initial counters.
So, my guess is that URI actually signed a 20 (scholarship) player class, which is actually a pretty good sized class since you can only have 63 scholarships (4x20=80), and Bryant probably gave some scholarship money to 30 kids and another eight that have committed to play at Bryant will be non-scholarship athletes (non-counters).

Are there any any plans for upgrades this season I know that lockers were talked about. They are getting new jerseys this season. But what about an outdoor video board or upgrades to the stands and turf?

I would think an outdoor video board would be something they'd want because it will pay for itself with the ads they can run on it.

Re: Football signing day.
With all due respect, a new video board is pretty much the last thing we need in Meade Stadium. It certainly made sense to do that in the Ryan Center, both due to the volume of events in the facility and the fact that the facility is obviously in great condition. To add a video board at Meade doesn't make sense at this time, because the amount of time to recoup the investment when you're only holding 5-6 events there a year is prohibitive and there's far too many improvements that are far more urgent. Any penny spent on Meade that isn't spent on fixing the East stands is wasted money.

I agree. We need a respectable place to play and then we can worry about these other cosmetic things.RhowdyRam02 wrote:With all due respect, a new video board is pretty much the last thing we need in Meade Stadium. There was a rumor around this time last year that lights and turf were coming. I know a video board is not a must need but it could easily pay itself off. Is there a push from athletics to get the stands redone soon?

I totally agree about the earlier point about the east stands. Were re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic until there is a serious upgrade to those stands. By serious upgrade I mean bulldozing and rebuilding those stands.

Re: Football signing day.
I don't know of any real push to get them redone, it's more of a vague "we know we have to do it and we really want to do it, but don't have the money" kind of thing as best I can tell. That said, I think it's urgent, because I don't think the East stands have much of a life span left. They lasted for 31 years before they were condemned. They just finished their 5th season after patchwork repairs were done to keep them open. How much longer do they have left for those repairs to be effective? How much longer before other parts of the stands are no longer safe? I'm not a structural engineer, but I can tell you I didn't feel safe at all when sitting toward the top of the stands last season. It felt like an excessive amount of buckling as people would walk past me up the stairs. I'll never sit up there again and I would never recommend other people doing it either.Rhody4012016 wrote:Is there a push from athletics to get the stands redone soon?
