I was hoping against hope that he'd be persuaded to stay.
Now we have to hear the bullshit about leaving a sinking ship,
we're a stepping stone, and all the other crapola we hear.
A tough loss, despite those who would tell us it's not.
To those people I would ask, name one good thing about this.

There are a few here that will say it's not a big deal. It is a big deal, another huge blow to the future of our program.rodfromcranston wrote:I was hoping against hope that he'd be persuaded to stay.

Let's see how many 4 star recruits we get now, or 3 star, for that matter.

I'm somewhere in the middle I think. It sucks, I hate it...love Preston, and I don't see anything "good" about it. But I also don't think it's impossible to recover from. All just kind of depends on what happens from here on...

good luck Preston.
Let's hope Dan has forged a good enough relationship with our recruits that he can seal the deal.

Will remain to be seen how everybody else steps up in the recruiting game.Billyboy78 wrote:Let's see how many 4 star recruits we get now, or 3 star, for that matter.
I think one thing we have to be careful of though, is if Preston and/or BC goes out and starts bringing a bunch of huge recruits in the next year or two, we can't all jump to conclusions and start saying "see we would have had that guy if Preston was still here."

Re: Reports: Preston Murphy to Join BC staff as Assistant Co
It is recoverable. It however VERY much hurts recruiting in the short term. May take another year or more to get back to where we were. A program just cannot keep losing their #1 assistant year after year without it hurting.adam914 wrote:I'm somewhere in the middle I think. Re: Reports: Preston Murphy to Join BC staff as Assistant Co
I see it this way... we're in the process of a slow rebuild here.
If Preston left after we climbed the mountain, at least we'd be able to be
in a position of strength to recover.
This does not impact on any of the spring signings that may happen. Those
were not Preston's recruits.
Where the impact will be felt is fall 2014. Look on the recruiting page, and 90%
of those guys are Preston's contacts.
So, if we get Sprewell, Gustys and Brown (for argument's sake)
the roster is stocked well enough to sustain his leaving.
If we sign a backup for Graham from Appalacian, and some juco
and don't get Gustys, I view it differently.
Another losing season and much of this becomes a moot point

Dan has got to be discouraged. He seems to have had more valleys than peaks since he came to Kingston. I cannot imagine that he ever envisioned what has happened since he came here. It is taking much longer to get things on track than what anyone would have thought.

Re: Reports: Preston Murphy to Join BC staff as Assistant Co
Can't begrudge Preston for doing what is best for his family and career. He will be making considerably more money and the ACC and Boston College have a higher profile than the A-10 and Rhode Island.
URI however owes Murphy nothing going forward. He was offered a job a few years back when he was out of work. He was promoted while on staff and it appears an effort was made to try to keep him. If the head coaching job at URI ever becomes available and Preston applies, he should be judged on his merits alone and URI should hire the best candidate available. If the best candidate is someone other than PM, so be it. Rhody needs to act in its best interests just as Preston is now doing. In my opinion, his leaving by his choice negates any special favors being due to him. URI has more than "repaid" him for his playing time.

One has to think how many more valleys until Dan says enough is enough and gets out if dodge. It's so frustrating I imagine. One step forward, one step back! Let's hope DH has a great plan!

Re: Reports: Preston Murphy to Join BC staff as Assistant Co
Agree with RF1. Nothing is owed to Preston.
It's time for Dan to step up and be who we thought he was.
Those deep connections we were always told he has, need to be
used.
I enjoyed Bobby and Preston. I'm less than impressed with the rest of the
hires. I'm sure they're all good people, with varying talents.
Now that Preston's gone, this puts the onus to perform, right on them.
It puts the onus on Hurley to hire someone not in his usual sphere, but someone
who can create new pipelines to bring in talent.
If, as has been told by a few people, that Leo Papile is trying to establish a
relationship with URI, then that interest should be explored thoroughly.
Another couple of seasons like the last one, and the posse will escort Dan out of Dodge.
Much as I like him and have supported him, yes, he's faced a lot of adversity.
However, like Ed Cooley has, he needs to step up and get past those pitfalls.

Re: Reports: Preston Murphy to Join BC staff as Assistant Co
Best of luck to a great player, great guy, great recruiter, great head assistant coach and great future D1 head coach.
Our loss is Boston College's gain.
Happy that URI made attempts to keep Preston with the promotion to Head assistant recently and then to provide a counter offer.
Good to see URI have bobby Hurley and now Preston get promotions.
This makes for a bad week got many of us who have followed and known Preston over his career........good for him, challenges ahead for our program. But Preston has certainly helped to lay the foundation for the years ahead so a big thankyou is well deserved.

We know what the URI offer was ... a Subway card. Well, big fish eat little fish. What else is new? I am surprised Murphy left for this job.
Never bought into the coach in waiting idea. Hurley might be here 10 more years or two. I wish Preston well. Have to say we've seen this kind of story before.
Also, how much did Preston lean on Skinner for counsel. Some, I bet.

They already are. They claim they don't recruit against us.
Gee, Terrell eliminated them and had us in his final two.
But, we don't recruit against them, because we are so inconsequential.
Unfortunately, nothing in the last three years has given us much
ammo to fire back with.
Why would Skinner, who got royally screwed over by BC, advise Preston
to go there?
I wish Preston all the best and thank him for his contributions to
the program. I will miss him.

Re: Reports: Preston Murphy to Join BC staff as Assistant Co
#1 thing to takeaway from this is to not name an associate head coach. Didn't he do that with Bobby?
Get the title and bolt.
BC has had a lack of security for its coaches over the past few years, strangely Preston was a casualty to that before....
Too bad cause Preston was a star among the fans, butttttt.... We still Have the best pieces we have had in some time now. I dont think it is unreasonable to expect a team that comes out and pushes for 20 wins this season.
All the transfers should have a sense of urgency they have not had before. We basically get our whole team back that showed flashes of top 6 A10 ball this past year. Loss of X hurts on the court but everyone gains another year.
Just TJ alone could be the best defender in the A10 this year if thats all he is asked to do. Another year for that kid in the gym is going to be a nightmare for any guard in the A10.
Im With Rod get on the BABC train!

As far as the BABC, Murray is the supposedly the one with New England connections, even though it was Preston who recruited Garrett. I've heard Murray on the radio, not the most personable guy. I think I'd rather have his father out talking to recruits.

I'm not getting the Koch criticism. One of the only local guys focused on covering us... And by the way doing a very good job of it... And you constantly rip him?rodfromcranston wrote:Bill Koch, who has turned into a house boy, says BC needs to "vet" Preston, thought HR,
before an announcement.
Really? Seems to me he's a former employee, so much of that is still in their HR records.
As for this board, I've been accused of trying to stifle opinions I disagree with.
That I've gotten into personal battles with a couple of people.(OK, more than a couple) Guilty, as charged.
However, calling people, "ignorant", "childish", "dumb", and telling them to "grow up", strikes me as
getting personal. Using those words to counter a poster's opinions, and never addmiting to being
wrong, strikes me as hypocritical, since others are accused of doing the same.
As for Rooke and Cordischi, they have no inside information on what Murphy is doing.
Remember the running Twitter battle I had with Rooke over Shaka Smart's "done deal"?
Another one who never admits to being wrong.

If that is in fact what we offered...I am satisfied with the effort, considering the financial shape of each schools athletic department . Is that the kind of money we now have available to go lure away a top recruiter from someone else...or is that only Preston money?

I agree, if that was URI's offer, it appears Preston
wanted out.
A hometown discount and other considerations didn't cut it.
I'm kind of shocked URI went as far as they did.
Looks like it all fell on deaf ears.
So, I don't see URI being at fault, and it seems like Preston is the
one who wanted out of dodge.
Good job by Bill Koch getting those specifics, which are very telling, indeed.

Maybe a lighter workload, a chance to see his family more?
City of Boston?
I know what he did this year, and other than Presidential candidates,
I can't imagine anyone travelling more and more often than Preston did.
Maybe with a horse like Spinelli, the load gets divided better,
and the pressure to perform will be less.
Besides, nobody cares about Boston College basketball in Boston.

Re: Reports: Preston Murphy to Join BC staff as Assistant Co
We don't actually know the salary structure. According to BK, URI offered a 3 year deal to bring his pay from 130-200. That could be 130, 160, 200. If it's 200 the first year, then I agree with BAR, but that does not sound like URI. My guess is it was graduated, and the difference in year one alone, would be significant.

I am not sure how to interpret this. Does this mean a three year deal at say 135k, 165k, 195k or 3 years at 195k? If it is the former I can see why he turned it down.Billyboy78 wrote:Are you surprised he turned this down?

Honestly surprised we made such an aggressive offer, and the coach in waiting thing seems so strange this early in Hurley's tenure. Can't blame him for leaving for more money, but the salaries were competitive enough, IMO. Can't say administration didn't try to keep him, that's for sure.
Best of luck to Preston. We'll rebound, despite the blow. Every other program does it. Xavier has been losing HEAD coaches for years, and they're still successful. Big programs get assistants poached constantly. Time to step up and make a good hire.

If Preston was worth $200,000 to the program then why wasn't he being paid that? It's too late to show the $ when an employee has other offers. I'd say Thorr and Hurley misread the situation when they didn't give Preston a better deal when they promoted him.
That said, I think this is a bump in the road that can be overcome.

I agree with Iggy .To those who are happy there was a counter offer, I do not agree. It has nothing to do with whether Preston should get more money, it has everything to do with the manner that you(in this case URI, Thorr etc) treat their people.
If the reports are correct, URI offered about 200k a year as a counter offer, but yet felt they could get away with $135k. before he was recruited by BC.
So, did Thorr et al know what the market was for someone like Preston; if not, shame on them, if they did and tried to get away with doing it on the cheap, shame on them.
From Preston's viewpoint, what do you think he was thinking when he got a "promotion" and was still that much under his market value- would that not effect everyone's attitude towards their former employer?
When the word was leaked this week, (I can only assume by BC,) Preston's options were limited. If he accepted URI counter offer, he could easily be perceived as using BC to get a raise. What would his stock be down the road when another school was considering him. eg. I don't want to get involved with this guy because he used BC before to get a raise. Nobody wants to be used to help someone else and I am sure Preston must have thought hard about this effect when he evaluated the URI counter offer.
Of course, if BC leaked it without Preston's permission, Preston is making a deal with the devil.
The loss of Preston is solely because we did not take care of him when we should have, coming in after the fact is simply "TOO LATE" in most cases. It is not anyway to run an athletic department or University.!!!!

Furthermore, what do they say to a desirable new Assistant, - we will pay you now because we have to, but if you do a good job, don't expect to be taken care of unless you go through the hassle of getting another and better offer.
If you were a desirable hire, why would you put yourself in that position.
This whole thing is minor league! Regardless of his record, if DH is who we think he is, do you think he will put up with this for very long.

That's usually how every job works, athletics or otherwise... You typically have to leave to get a significant raiseMcRam wrote:Furthermore, what do they say to a desirable new Assistant, - we will pay you now because we have to, but if you do a good job, don't expect to be taken care of unless you go through the hassle of getting another and better offer.
