Buzz Williams to Virginia Tech
Apparently Buzz hates the direction of the new Big East and thought it was basically a mid-major conference post realignment. Interesting coming from a coach like Buzz.

Some clown on Scout thinks Marshall of Wichita should go to Marquette.
These NBE people just don't get it! This isn't the Big East anymore, except in name only.
Learn it. Accept it. It will only get worse.
Wichita State is now a far better program than ANY NBE program. Period.

Early name is Ben Howland, although it's ridiculous how early such rumors get started.
I don't care where he coaches, I love Buzz Williams. He's a big supporter of the Brayden Carr foundation and has spoken at their coaches clinic. A really good guy.
Someone said Williams already changed his background and bio on his Twitter profile to VT. I guess this is how things are confirmed these days?

BE schools for the next 12 years will have far more $$$ to pay coaches than a lot of other mid major schools. i expect that marquette can and will make a good hire. who heard of buzz williams when he was on crean's staff?rodfromcranston wrote:Some clown on Scout thinks Marshall of Wichita should go to Marquette.

Yeah - but he built his rep beating Boehiem, Calhoun and Pitino. Legendary coaches. There are no more legendary coaches in the big east. There are a few very good ones in Jay Wright and JT3 but no superstar HC. Shaka is as big if not bigger of a star than these guys.

I think Cooley has a chance to be a great coach, given how he's turned around PC's recruiting when others couldn't.

I don't disagree that Cooley can be really good - I doubt he is ever Jim Boheim, Calhoun, John Thompson, Rick Pitino, etc.

I love that from our friends to the north, last week Buzz and Marquette were John Wooden and UCLA. now it's who the hell is buzz williams, and next it will be dont worry if marquette is down for a couple years Seton Hall has a great recruiting class next year, they are gonna be good. They call that spin. You do that when you have no good answers.

Give us more credit than that. Go read the PC board and then comment. Most are very sad to see Buzz go. Only spin would be if they get a great coach. Howland and Smart are both on their radar.bigappleram wrote:I love that from our friends to the north, last week Buzz and Marquette were John Wooden and UCLA. now it's who the hell is buzz williams, and next it will be dont worry if marquette is down for a couple years Seton Hall has a great recruiting class next year, they are gonna be good. Shaka isn't going there. Lateral move.
He turned down a boatload of money from UCLA and Illinois. He'll do the same with them, if offered.

it seems that he was not a fan of the direction that the new Big East was heading in
Wow. There are even some reports that the new Catholic Big East tv deal was part of the reason. While the Fox deal pays out very handsomely, the viewership is tiny. The regular season FS1 games averaged under 95,000/game. While the Providence/Creighton Championship game game set a FS1 college hoops record with 702,000, it earned just a 0.5 overnight rating, according to Sports Business Daily — down 76% from Louisville/Syracuse on ESPN last year (2.1), and down 69% from Louisville/Notre Dame in 2012 (1.6).

The BE could lose this deal if ratings don't improve. Is FS1 here to stay?
That would not be good for them, in just a slight understatement.

ratings are a two way street in this venture. product needs to be good and fox needs to do a better job drawing eyes. no way in hell the money is not guaranteed.rambone 78 wrote:The BE could lose this deal if ratings don't improve. Is FS1 here to stay?

Smart's turned down every major job that's opened for the last three years.
BCS schools like UCLA with giant checkbooks.
Why would he go to mid major Marquette?
Not happening. Ben Howland? Maybe. He was good at Pitt, but
less so at UCLA.

Of course, with what happened tonight, maybe a few VCU fans might want to run Shaka out of town in spite of all his success there.
Just kidding, I hope.

Watch for Steve Masiello from Manhattan to garner interest for the Marquette job. He is a great young coach with Pitino blood lines. We could have had him, but Thor went in a different direction.

Re: Buzz Williams to Virginia Tech
The NBE needs a hero, in both a coach and a star 1-and-done, which would work on a team coming off like a sweet sixteen. THEN if the league had other formidable opponents for this heroic team to play people would watch. It is hard to have good ratings when your game isn't ever the best game on.
Espn rolls out a better game, if not 2 every night.
I think the future looks bleak for the conference, needs more teams. A10 has top teams and then so many teams that there is a cycle of teams getting experience and seniors that propel them to the top, which creates depth. NBE will have similar top teams but they won't have the luxury of 2-3 teams breaking through from the bottom to create that depth.
Also A10 is used to fighting this battle, NBE is not.

UNLESS, he's aware of some type of sanctions coming down the road. Remember, Buzzie-Boy, ridiculed Marquette becoming a member of the proposed SUPER A-10.
In retrospect, the NBE's worst move was the one it didn't make.
THE SUPER A-10.

Re: Buzz Williams to Virginia Tech
its ESPN and then everyone else for college hoops
all the Fox money in the world cant propel PC, Depaul, SHU, St Johns and Marquette to be programs the regular Joe hoops fan cares a whole lot about. they will need years of competing for national championships to become household names like uconn, syracuse, etc. that is not going to happen.

But Shaka also turned down Illinois and UCLA. If Shaka finally takes another college job (which would have to be a really premo job), it will be in a power conference and not a lateral move from the A-10.

Superfly,
How can you say Masiello is not ready. This guy did a masterful job at Manhattan, which is a breeding ground for D1 coaches and he went toe to toe with Pitino Thursday night. He is more ready than most coaches and will be in the mix for many good jobs.

It's interesting that PC fans are giving us some love on their board. We are just simple restating what media outlets are reporting that Buzz doesn't like the direction of the league and thinks it's essentially a mid-major conf now. Who knew restating the media reports makes us delusional! For the record since we know they read this board so much, nobody is taking shots at big Ed, I think he is perfect for PC, great recruiter and local guy.

could this be bad news in terms of garrett? he wanted to play at marquette not because buzz was the coach, but because he grew up a huge marquette fan. if some of marquette's recruits leave because buzz isn't there, that could open the door...

Re: Buzz Williams to Virginia Tech
It is the PC fans that are delusional. They still think they are in a power conference. New flash to them. Five other conferences placed more teams in the NCAA this past year, the first season for their new league. While the payout for their new tv deal is great, no one is watching. The coach of one of their high profile jobs just left for a bottom tier ACC program indicating he didn't like the direction of the new league. It is an entirely new reality for new Catholic Big East members than what it once was.CT Rhody wrote:It's interesting that PC fans are giving us some love on their board. The hate on the Scout board is coming from the same piece of shit, who
claimed (as Brutus, which he admited on their board) he always rooted for URI when they weren't playing PC.
while saying,"God bless you all" and "Merry Christmas to all of you and your
families."
Same one who used to spam the Projo board.
Yeah, whatever.
You should read the venom aimed at Roy Williams. Way over the top.
Then you have a supposed URI fan, who says he hates our board, because all we do is complain about
refs. Guess this hypocrite doesn't read the board he prefers, because that's all they do.

Imagine what it would have been if the two conferences combined to form a "super" conference. For the first time in history URI and PC fans would be cheering for the same teams in the tournament.

If I'm a pc fan, I want the NBE to stay at 10 teams. Bringing in teams like Dayton and St Louis would automatically put them ahead of pc in the pecking order making it more difficult to pc to get to the ncaa's. They are in a perfect spot right now and have a promising future in the conference as it exists right now.

Sean admitted it a long time back - the NBE was the best thing err for PC because they have an opportunity to be near the top of the league every year. But along with that has not come the revelation that the league they are near the top of is a high mid-major league on par with the A10.

Re: Buzz Williams to Virginia Tech
Why would Dayton and SLU automatically be ahead of PC? Neither have had sustained success in recent years. SLU is at least close but have to go into complete rebuild after losing big chunks of their roster. If the Big East gets 4 out of 10 in, or 5 out of 12, nearly the same in regards to PC. What we don't want is empty numbers. So it returns to the old argument, quality over quantity. 6 bids looks pretty on the surface, but means nothing in the scope if you struggle to advance those teams.
