I didnt see anything posted on this kid yet when doing a search...St. Anthony PG. We must have come in late on him. Sounds like alot of people are.

"Smith is being recruited by Providence, Creighton, Rhode Island, Lehigh, Delaware, Boston University, Boston College, Fordham and Florida International."

Something tells me Bob Sr. would have some input on this.

If he says URI would be a better fit for him, he's probably listen. He did say that Smith needs more development.

If we don't get him, oh well, it happens. We are not going to land every St. Ant's recruit

But if he goes to PC, now that would be a slap across the face.

PC has been involved wit this kid for some time.
We haven't gotten any St. Anthony's kids.
Brown went to Temple last fall, when it was between us and the Owls.
Halice Cooke went to Oregon State.
While it's not a banner year for St. Anthony's, I'm not so sure that pipeline
will ever be a reality.

Recruiting really isn't personal like that. Who cares if he goes to Providence? And, any idea that Rhode Island should automatically get or be a favorite for a St. Anthony kid doesn't, and never has, made sense. Just not how it works. The one they did miss out on worked out for the best anyway.

Finklestein put the ranking of available point guards in this order: 1. Devonte Graham (not really available yet) 2. Jarvis Garrett 3. Tarin Smith. Obviously just one man's opinion but its worth noting. I'd be surprised if PC took Smith's commitment before the Graham thing plays out.

if St Anthony's sends kids to PC and we are 0/2 in terms of years. Slap across the face.

I like getting kids that are grouped togethr in terms of these 3-5 guys are similar in potential or ability. Noway to tell who will be the best. Hope we get him or the Garret kid

i have to think a 5th year guy who can play immediately is gonna be part of the mix in some way. whether that's a proven PG who can come in and give us 1 great year while we work on a prime prospect for '15, a shooter to replace some of X's points, or another big.

I know last year, they took a shot at getting Jordan Morgan, a PG
6'8" 260lb. from Michigan, out of Detroit.
Since Michigan's center is out for the season, I'm sure Morgan and Michigan are
happy he stayed.
Lots of good successful post grads playing in the last couple of years.

On the one hand, PC hasn't offered so maybe Cooley and Hurley agree that he's not good enough.
On the other hand, 4 A10 teams have offered and under the circumstances ....

Some speculation on Smith from the PC angle:

He made some comments to Zagoria last month that basically made it seem like if Providence were to offer, he would love to be a Friar. While some seem to question whether or not he is good enough, others seem to think that PC "fears" offering him due to the fact they seem to be in great position with Jaquan Lyle (ESPN #41, Rivals #22) and are of significant interest to Devonte Graham (recent comments from Graham). Smith seems to project at best as a career backup at the Big East level, which can work at PC given Dunn if healthy has 3 more years and they are recruiting several guards for 2015. However, he has no where near the potential of the other two players, and therefore seems like a worst-case safety option. Seems other teams and coaches like Hurley and URI are also trying to exhaust other options before landing on him.

We don't need another Marquis Jones type, a 2 star recruit that took the better part of 4 years, to get halfway decent.

That's not going to get it done, as in NCAA bids.

Hey WAKE UP!
This kid plays for one of the top programs in America.
He's THEIR POINT GUARD.
If he's good enough to be Bob Hurley's point guard,
then he should be good enough to play here.
He's going to be fundamentally sound, play defense and be able to
run an offense.
He's a really smart kid., too.
We don't need Chris Paul to make this team run better. We need
someone to do what point guards are supposed to do.
Run the offense, distribute the ball, and make enough shots to keep
the defense honest.
Think Carlos Easterling in his senior year.

We need to find out what the staff really thinks of him, Rod.

We haven't offered. We've offered about 1,500 others. That should tell us something.

Yes, we don't need a Magic Johnson running the show, but Dan Hurley's opinion of him is what counts, not ours.

Maybe we need an incredibly late bloomer. When are the RI state playoffs?? Offer the MVP of the tournament, steal him away from RIC. That will get us over the hump.

If Bob Sr. loves him, he's good enough for us, then. I know he said he needs more development. Don't they all, at their age?

The key is his upside. If people in the know think he has great upside, then we need to be on him, like now.

Comments have been made that he will never be as good as Graham or Ju'quan. Any truth to this?

This kid is a more than acceptable backup plan for those looking for one. We still have TJ next year who can help this kid transition. Throw in a a good big and a good wing player and we still have a better team than we do now.

So why haven't we offered this kid?

Are we going to pull what Ok St did to us, swoop in at the last minute and steal him?

That would be something.

Not exactly an glowing review at the end there by Hurley Sr....
----------------------------------------------------------------------

“He’s a late developer,” Hall of Fame St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley told SNY.tv. of his point guard after Smith went for 11 points Tuesday in St. Anthony’s 56-41 victory over Camden.

“I think he would be intriguing for coaches because I think of the unsigned kids, he’s probably someone that people should look at.”

Asked if he believes he can play at the Big East level, Smith said, “Oh, yeah, for sure. I think I’m considered a late-bloomer as far as my growth and how my game has come along. I think now I’m definitely ready to play at the next level, Big East.”

When Hurley was asked the same question, he said, “If there’s more development coming.”

According to A.K.,
Ole Miss has offered 2014 PG Tarin Smith of St. Anthony (NJ).
By the way, as far as Smith playing in the Big East, Hurley Sr. was challenging Smith. Hurley knows that Smith knows how to read…..

Went back and watched the video of him again.

We could use him. He's got a good handle, passes well, and can shoot the 3.

He might take a year or two to get really good, but why not?

Offer him, Dan......

I don't know, something is off about this situation. We desperately, desperately, DESPERATELY need a PG. We haven't signed any incoming freshman for 2014. This kid is available and oh yeah, his current head coach who knows about this kids ability better than anyone just happens to be the father of our head coach. And yet we still haven't offered. Something's not right here but I'm going to trust that the coaches know something that we don't.

Stealth recruiting. Don't let anybody know we're after him, then sign him out of the blue.

possibilities
1. Staff doesn't think he's good enough
2. Senior Hurley has given Dan a more negative assessment than what he's saying publicly
3. Both of the above

I think that's a good idea. I don't think you can assume something is "not right here." Not every kid is a fit for every school, and vice versa. That doesn't necessarily change based on who the kid's high school coach is.
