Mike Powell
This tweet exchange sounds to me like he's still at URI, just not on the team. This could be good for APR?

Yeah if No Limit G Farro is in Chicago that is good for us. I think. I'm not great at translating twitter.

Re: Mike Powell
he had no choice, he had to stay in school....no one was going to take him with only a half semester to play. the dumbest part was why he didnt stick with the team for 2nd semester and stay in shape and stay sharp.

This was his tweet a couple days ago to Chris Herren:
@MikeP__: @c_herren what's up chris this mike Powell. I need your help. Do u have the same number?
It didn't work out here but he's still a kid and hope it works out for him elsewhere/in life.

If MikeP is still at URI, then he will be sitting out all of next season and not just first semester.
Also, MikeP must be paying his own way since he quit the team, or is his scholarship guaranteed for the year even if he quits?
If MikeP was still on the team with his head not in his a$$, then he would be back starting, injury or not to Biggie. A life lesson in never quitting.

I hate that Mike quit. I always liked Mike, and we could use him now for sure. Too bad. Just the way it goes sometimes.

Re: Mike Powell
This all is very ironic.
Powell let his disdain for losing his job lead him to
quitting the team.
Now with Minnis down, at the very least, he'd be getting
more playing time.
All he had to do was hang in. If he wanted out, do it after
the season.
Life is strange.

Re: Mike Powell
The weirdest thing is he gained nothing by leaving the team midseason. He's not going to be able to play at all next year if he hasn't enrolled somewhere for this semester. Makes no sense.

Re: Mike Powell
I'm hearing that he was asked to leave the team and will keep the scholarship this year with the understanding he fixes his academics if he wants a recommendation for anywhere else. No one wants him now because he was in such a funk losing his starting job that he screwed up in practice and in the classroom. Remember he is a kid and didn't handle disappointment well.

the only option that ever made sense was to sit out all of next year and come back for a final full year with a new school. due to that he had no choice but to stay i guess.

I guess, but then why walk from the team instead of seeing what happens? rhodyrob may have answered that, but that was my question.bigappleram wrote:the only option that ever made sense was to sit out all of next year and come back for a final full year with a new school. due to that he had no choice but to stay i guess.

Re: Mike Powell
It's this stuff that drives one crazy. did he leave? was he asked to leave? violation of "team rules?" and the violation was bad enough that mike would be asked to leave? that doesn't seem right or at least based on what is known it doesn't seem fair to MP. If it's true was the "violation" really egregious enough to ask a junior with two years of hard work to move on? seems a bit nose bitey to spite the face to me. perhaps it was one of those cancer in the clubhouse kinda situations. guess I'll just believe that everyone is better off this way.rhodyrob wrote:I'm hearing that he was asked to leave the team and will keep the scholarship this year with the understanding he fixes his academics if he wants a recommendation for anywhere else. Re: Mike Powell
A coach telling a kid to get lost happens more than you think. If Hurley needed Powell's scholarship, he probably told him to find another school. Baron did it with Chris Holm, although it was never reported publicly that's how it went down.

Re: Mike Powell
I'm not sure what a "good recommendation" does for MikeP. Any D1 program would do enough research on him to know in general what the story was. The minute details matter little. All you would need to see were the games immediately after he lost his starting job. It really doesn't matter much whether he quit or was asked to leave the team.
However, if he was asked to leave the team, he would keep his scholarship. In either case, he should have only one year of eligibility left and has self-identified as a head case. A medical red-shirt to restore this season is highly unlikely. Coaches can always tell a kid to "get lost and find another school" and not renew their scholarship for future seasons.

I was under the impression Chris Holm is the player Baron told, "you're not a Final Four player, and we're trying to be a Final Four team."URIGONZO wrote:A coach telling a kid to get lost happens more than you think. Yup, it was, although that quote came from Beherens, who was a walk-on that was upset that he wasn't playing. So, it does need to be taken with a bit of a grain of salt.URI96 wrote:I always thought it was Tommy Beherens (sp?)

I agree and I wish he had stuck around this past year, we could have used him. The kid seemed like a hard worker and could have continued to develop his game.STC wrote:I'm glad to see Mike Powell back with the team! Really good kid, will be nice to see him finish career on the court.
Keeping things in perspective...

Miller (22-?):

I think I missed a few beats here TP.... Maybe I'm in the dark. What's his current situation? Is he on an academic scholarship? Basketball? Is he on the team or in some kind of transition that involves his leaving the team and now he is wanting to come back? #lost

Re: Mike Powell
Update time.
Hare and Powell both on campus and reinstated to team.
Both have been practicing in the RC yesterday and today.
Some confusion on powell but from everybody ive talked to, DH wanted him back strictly for the APR as mike is a phenomenal student. Mike didnt have any D1 transfer offers and understands that hes most likely going to be a body in practice and thats all.
The route that DH is attempting to go is to get Mike on a full academic scholarship; and DH believes that will be granted, hence the reason we are out looking for other additions. BTW there was a visit to campus today but somebody big time.

Transferring as a junior- and taking up two years for one year of play- is always going to be rough, but that's kind of a tough reality check.SlyWilliamsCaddy wrote: Some confusion on powell but from everybody ive talked to, DH wanted him back strictly for the APR as mike is a phenomenal student. Mike was always one of our better students. I didn't realize his grades were good enough to get an academic scholarship, though. If that's the case, kudos to him.
It would surely help the team as far as another scholarship.

Not that his twitter thoughts mean anything, but mike just WENT OFF this morning, must have literally tweeted over 100 times within an hour. My first reaction was he wasn't on the team anymore as he mentioned something about "the old mike", so i came over to this board and apparently Hurley wants him to stay. IDK?
