Re: Game #7: George Mason
Of course they work on free throws in practice and under different scenarios (fresh, tired at the end of practice, etc.), but it's also the easiest thing to work on on your own. Very uncharacteristic of a Hurley team to be this poor at free throw shooting, has to be killing him. GM is an impressive defensive team, and it's showing.

Hell, Bo Kimble hit them left-handed in the NCAAs in tribute to Hank Gathers.

This ft shooting is just horrendous. Now 8-20. It may well be the difference in this game.

Only followed on gamecenter since the feed wasn't working. Seemed like a tough loss.
But, you can't shoot 13-26 from the line.
Hare with 6 blocks is obviously a positive. So it forcing 15 turnovers while only turning it over 6 times.

Should have won by close to 10. They have lost at least 2 games due to beyond bad foul shooting. Bad would be an improvement.

Sad but you don't deserve to win when you shoot only 13-26 from the line.
They play hard but can't close the deal.

Re: Game #7: George Mason
Lot of positives about this game - a few minor tweaks and this one's ours (sound familiar?)
Obviously horrible free throw shooting. Nik couldn't hit anything, ice cold all night. Not much from Malone. Munford continues to be our main source of offense. Powell played well tonight, made good decisions.
Tough loss against a good George Mason team. Looking at the percentages, surprised we were even in it.

Re: Game #7: George Mason
Not much to add, these guys work there ass off on each defensive possession. The effort they put forth as a Hurley team is quite impressive, and closing out the game still haunts these guys. Hare is coming along, as Bob Hurley said in the post game, he erases some of the defensive breakdowns, more practice time setting him up to receive a pass down low will help his growth. The poor free throw shooting killed this one period. Hare is blocking or changing opponents shots w/o major fouling.

A great showing from X, as expected.
I really want to know what Hurley said to them at the half. He must've lit them up.
Oh, breaking news, the refs were pretty damn bad.

Re: Game #7: George Mason
Wagner averaged around 60% FT or lower in the 3 yrs BEFORE Dan Hurley. When Dan was at the helm, they averaged 75% each year.ace wrote:Of course they work on free throws in practice and under different scenarios (fresh, tired at the end of practice, etc.), but it's also the easiest thing to work on on your own. Re: Game #7: George Mason
After everyone had left the floor to head into locker rooms at the half, where was Dan Hurley? Standing looking up into the Ryan Center upper deck with his hand on his head, thinking of what he can do to turn the game around. He gets so worked up, but it's great to see him center himself to deliver a positive, motivational message to his team.Ryan Rowdy wrote:I really want to know what Hurley said to them at the half. Loved it when he took off the jacket! He almost did that in the Loyola game, but tonight it had to come off. Can't play D with a suit jacket on!

Re: Game #7: George Mason
Back from the game.
Very frustrating again,
Munford and Powell were great (minus Munford's FT shooting), but they got no help on offense.
Nick had 3 points and 3 fouls. Malone was 1-7.
We got slaughtered on the offensive boards.
22 points on second chances.
This team never quits. They were awful in the 1st half,
and fought back.
Free throws killed us, once again.
One bad call, could have meant the difference.
Munford was crusing in for a breakaway. He glanced over his shoulder, waiting for the foul call, that never came.
He missed the shot, and GM made a three. Possible six point turnaround.
The defense was great.
Just couldn't get over the hump.
GM is a very good team. Possibly the second or third best team we've played.
Saturday's another tough game with UVM.
Not a great crowd, again. Students out in force, though.

Re: Game #7: George Mason
I'll say this - No one can ever accuse Cox of catering to just the big schools. Then again, at times it looks like they pick their broadcast schedule via a monkey throwing darts at a board. Ponaganset didn't even qualify for the D-III playoffs, so I'm not sure why one of their games was on tonight, if that was the case.hrstrat57 wrote:I just got home, cox 1005 has Ponaganset football on???????????????

Re: Game #7: George Mason
We all saw Xavier light the net on fire tonight, but there were two other players that looked really good as well.
Mike Powell was clutch tonight with a couple key 3 point shots, limited turnovers and great defense. He had one hell of a steal as well. Mike is really starting to become a solid leader...especially when it counts.
TJ played great on defense. If I recall correctly, that was his M.O. when coming here. It showed tonight. He really helped turn the momentum in Rhody's favor.
Nik seem to have a bad night. It's like the team went flat every time he was substituted onto the floor. I really think he should've stayed on the bench. He had some bad turnovers. One happened at a crucial point towards the end of the game. Our only saving grace was that the George Mason player screwed up on his own.
Oh and one more thing....FREE THROWS, FREE THROWS....oh and...FREE THROWS...WTF! I don't care if they all have to bank it in off of the glass. There is a reason they have that white square on the backboard...it's to help put the ball in the basket. It was a horror show at the foul line tonight.

Re: Game #7: George Mason
I will say this, if this team can get their FT percentage up to about 65%, they will win quite a few games going forward.
If not, what happened tonight will keep happening.
Hurley has GOT to have them practicing FT's until their hands bleed.

Look, we can keep almost any game close.
We need to shoot free throws. Those are freebies.
It's a shame we've lost three games because of
free throw shooting. Technically one of the easiest
things in basketball.

I like the inspired defense still, though. I also like controlling the ball so well with few turnovers. Shooting is tough, we have no offensive inside presence, and of course the free throws are brutal.rodfromcranston wrote:Look, we can keep almost any game close.

I watched the whole game and it was my 1st time seeing this team
Really impressed with X's scoring ability
Love Hares ability to block shots
This team is fun to watch play defense and the offense moves the ball

I agree their defensive effort is awesome! Why was Hurley blowing his lid and I think even grabbed Malone and X yelling at them? Just curious if someone missed an assignment or something.reef wrote:I watched the whole game and it was my 1st time seeing this team
