It does look like we are trying to add guys who can stretch the defense. Between adding Four and some of the early offers out, they definitely ID'd that as a key ingredient they were missing. I'm not arguing that we don't need bigs, but I said very early on last season that the lack of a perimeter scoring threat was going to set the ceiling for that team. I am glad they are at least addressing that.

It doesn't matter. It's not as if they're going to
have three new players signing today.
This isn't the NBA draft.
People seem to think that just because it's the 15th, that
all hell will break loose. Doesn't work that way.
This is a very long signing period.

Correct, at the earliest, schools can't announce any signees until the signed LOI is received by the school.

But, the longer into the period we go without getting anybody, the more concern there will be.

Guys who have verbaled since the fall signing day will fax in their LOIs today, but uncommitted players won't decide today just because they are now allowed to sign. Where you would see URI get a fax is if we had one of the mythologized "silent verbals" where a player is committed but only he and the coaches know about it. You hear people talk about that happening, but I don't know that I've ever really seen it.

Well, if we get a good big man this period, it will have to be a surprise, because we've heard nothing about them from either the staff or the players themselves.

I'm still hoping for Kyle Alexander. He was hurt and missed most of the latter part of the season. He's the talented big kid from Canada who pretty much went under the radar until Duke showed some interest. 6'10" with a 7'4" wingspan. Very quiet recruitment. I wonder what he's up to?

Any idea on the level or name of the Greek kid Rod?
Just throwing this out there... I haven't heard our name involved with this kid at all but...There was a big Greek kid who played for Team Takeover last summer named something like "Georgio Papagino". He was at Westtown High School in PA before heading back to Greece. A legit 7'0 originally a 2015 prospect, and was considered a high major recruit. I'm not sure what happened to him

Zags also mentioned that Papagiannis signed a multi-year deal over in Greece, but had the option to return to the states. I wonder if this will impact his NCAA eligibility at all

Apparently he has been on a Greek team. Assume that means it is professional and i guess that it means he can come back to the states to play college ball but has used up his amateur status.

from the numbers below, does not seem to be tearing it up. did not play in their first playoff game.

I really don't think Giorgios is the guy. He's considered to be a 4 star and even a 5 star (ESPN), who has been linked to teams like Kansas and Kentucky.

He'll likely go "big time"

I think the situation looks bleak. Without any smoke anywhere, they probably don't have an "in" with anybody we would want to hear about. If they take somebody, then they will probably not hold the scholarship for 4 years.

Got to admit it does appear we're pitching a shutout so far this recruiting period.

I assumed that when we gave releases to Butler, Minnis & JR that we knew we were close with more talented newcomers and needed the scholarships.

With the additions of McGlynn, Thompson & Butts its likely that Butler & JR wouldn't have played much next season anyway. But Minnis would have still seen minutes as a back-up to Garrett. So that's a puzzle.

At this point I'd even take the 6'9 big man from Brown. He's a fundamentally soind player who could help. Unfotunately, I hear he's headed for Rice.

Yes, the signing period may have just started today, but there's nothing out there in big men that match up with mid-major schools for the class of 2015. There are some unsigned top 25 players, but they ain't coming to URI.

The best of the juco big men are pretty much gone.

That leaves 5th year transfers, and there are very few quality bigs in that group so far and we haven't been mentioned in connection with any of them.

I find it interesting that this is Hurley's most successful season on the court at URI, but on paper, this appears to be his weakest performance on the recruiting trail. But all of that can change with 1-2 impact signings...

I feel as though we can get away with someone 6-8 to 6-9 who can play 20-25 min, score 6-8 PPG and grab 5-7 boards. Those are not stud numbers, but they would do the trick.

From what I've seen lately, it does look like the staff is focusing more on 2016's. 4 year players.

There are quite a few good big men and PG's available. I could see us locking up a couple during the fall signing period.

So we may not see much in the way of more help for next season.

Which imo does not bode well for next season. Rod mentioned no visits lately. I would think he's right, seeing that some info would have to leak out during any visits.

Anyway, I expect a couple of 5th years to be added soon, or maybe a transfer or juco. One of those 5th years would have to be a big, even if he's not that good. We need front line depth desperately.

We could end up with 1 open scholly, which would leave us with 4 for 2016.

And then they just sign up for summer school. No LOI No need for one. Just sign the grant in aid.

Not sure of this, but, I think that Terrell never signed a LOI.

It looked like the type of dynamic move that
many big time programs do.
Clear out players who won't be playing much and upgrading the roster.
So far, only the former has happened.
We're all waiting for the other shoe to drop.
The lack of information lately to connect us to anyone but 2016 guards,
is worrisome.

We now have 3 slots open with Reischel, Minnis and Butler gone - These are important slots to fill
The most important recruiting time of year and events are upcoming
We know Dan was at Virginia
URI will be represented at all of the EYBL Events and then some
For sure Dan will be at Peach Jam in July
It's a good thing to have openings at this point in time for flexibility - gives Dan and the Coaching staff room to recruit for current slots and also save 1 or 2 for future. Nice to be able to be selective versus desperate.
It's unsettling to have 3 openings for us fans but it's nice to have the open slots moving through the upcoming months
Still hearing a big man is a priority for this year's team
Not sure if the starting line up changes - depending on who is brought in - not sure who would sit
Next year 4 guys are Seniors so this is good for moving into the recruiting season
Dan has great selling points at EYBL this year - we should be among the preseason favorites for the A10 title
Just read where Tillman decided to remain at VCU instead of tranferring

2015 Nike EYBL Schedule:
April 10-12 – EYBL Session #1 – Hampton, VA
April 24-26 – EYBL Session #2 – Lexington, KY
May 8-10 – EYBL Session #3 – Houston, TX
May 22-25 – EYBL Session #4 – Minneapolis, MN
July 15-19 – EYBL Peach Jam – North Augusta, SC

1 Thompson Freshman
2 Butts Freshman
3 Iverson Soph or Junior? - Starter
4 Garrett Soph - Starter
5 Terrell Soph - Starter
6 Mathews Junior - Starter
7 Martin Junior - Starter
8 Watson Senior
9 Onekaba Senior
10 Plunkett Senior
11 McGlynn Senior

Plunkett is a walk-on.
These tournaments are for 2016-17 kids, mostly.
We need to fill some holes, now.
You don't want five or six openings next year.
It unbalances the classes.
Coaches want to avoid bringing in too many new players
at once, because it's difficult to work that many into
the system.
As it is, we now have four newbies and possibly seven.
Lot of new bodies to blend into any team.
The good part is, the core 4 are in place, so it's ancillary players
for the most part, who will need to have their roles defined.

I keep telling myself that while Dan has been here, he has saved some of his best off the court work for when things have looked the worst...just when the board is about to go nuts, he pulls something out. I hope that trend continues...because lets' face it, the only ones who want to win more than us, is the staff and team.

Visits for 2016 players happen in the fall generally
As I said, we are looking at a player of two who will help this fall - nothing has changed on that.

There are two parts to this recruiting:
- For this coming year - should be one player, maybe 2
- For 2016 and 2017
Our space on the roster is in great shape now accomplish both

Even though he'd have to sit out a year, I could get psyched
about Kyle Washington.
He's a big and mobile 4 star, top 100.
Now, before anyone bitches about his numbers, NCState is almost
totally guard oriented on offense.
Of course, so are we.
Confused about Tomasz Gielo. It looks like he's played four
full seasons for Liberty. Looks like a 6'9" McGlynn in stats. He's from Poland.
