Still don't get what Boone is doing with the top of the lineup.

You've got a .230 hitter [Gardner] who can't steal bases leading off...then Judge who isn't exactly a singles hitter who isn't fast.

Then batting 3rd you have the Whiff Machine [Stanton]…..not going to manufacture many runs with that top 3.

Now with Stanton out they put Voit 3rd who's slower than I am, and another whiffer Bird follows.

The Red Sox even with their pitching issues don't need to win 108 games again to win this division. Not even 100 most likely.

Then the Rays who have lights out pitching might even take the wild card.

One more thing....teams are also figuring out how to pitch to Judge...as in walk him. He might walk 200 times this season, since the guy behind him might be a threat to homer, but will likely strike out 5-6 times more often than he homers.

Yankees are piling up the injuries...now Andujar is on the DL...when it rains it pours...but at least he won't be playing 3rd base for a while....his throws to first are an adventure....lol

I think they are still a playoff team this season unless everyone gets hurt...but still too many holes and too HR happy and not enough hitters who hit for average.....the Sox team BA was what 40 points higher last season?

Sale topping out at 90...dealing slow...not good.
Can't imagine the Sox paid all that cache to lock up a crafty lefty.

Don't worry Sox fans....Yanks can't hit either with what looks like a AAA team due to all the injuries.

Rays may run away and hide before both teams get back on track.

Both his K/9 and K/BB are way off the mark so far.
He's on pace for 111 strike outs if he starts 30 games.
I can't imagine that holds up, but it would be scary if it does.
I keep hearing people reference lower pitch speeds at the beginning of last season as well.
The difference was that in his first two starts last season, Sale went 11 innings, gave up 6 hits, 1 earned run, and had 15 K's to 3 BB's.
This season he's gone 9 innings, 9 hits, 8 earned runs, and had 5 K's to 4 BB's and 2 additional HBPs.
His outing was good enough to get the win last night, but it's just not $30 million per season Chris Sale.

Also, that arm by Ramon Laureano

The Red Sox will right the ship when they get home.

11 game road trip against good teams is a tough way to start the season.

At least we knew they weren't going to start the season 17-2 like last year.....

Meanwhile, Tampa's pitching keeps throwing zeroes. Might be the best staff in the league, better than the Sox or Astros.

The A's would do well to get rid of Rodney as their closer...he's terrible.

The Yanks are facing a very bad start until they get a whole bunch of guys back from the IL.

The group playing right now can't hit for shit, except for Judge. Even he hasn't homered yet.

Rodney isn't their closer. Blake Treinen is. 38 saves last year and a 0.78 ERA. The guy is nasty.

Game was 3-3 in the ninth, that's why Rodney was in the game.
Sox had the horseshoe in their ass last night -- between Profar throwing away that double play ball, Mookie's ball that hit the 3rd base bag for the go-ahead runs, and even Holt with a great play to end the 8th on what would have scored a run and kept the inning going.
Let's hope it was enough to kickstart the bats and they kick some ass this afternoon.

Sox can't wait to get home.

Yanks can't wait to get half their lineup off the IL.

Looks like Martinez is going to have another big year. He's their new Big Papi.

And the Yanks are stuck with a BIG albatross of a contract AKA the Whiff Machine Stanton.

And Judge has become a singles hitter at 6'7" 275 lbs. When he hits the ball at all lol.

At least they kept Torres around. That kid is going to be a superstar.

Yep...brutal.
Welp...this was the perfect year to decide I was going to try to catch at least 'some' of every Sox game on TV this year. The streak is intact but...yuck. At least it's good to get a bunch of these west coast games out of the way early in the sched. Still, another reason to have just one (EST) time zone for the US...

From the postgame interview, Porcello's problem is obvious - Mrs 208 even recognized it right away.

Probably not but last year they had a lot of good fortune. When the pitching sucked, the hitting was dialed in. When the hitting sucked, the pitching was dialed in. This year to start there has been no sync. No offense to keep them in games early, no pitching to give the offense time to wake up. By the time the offense wakes up, it's such a big hole, see below.

Here are the numbers:
In the first 3 innings of the first 9 games, the Red Sox are being outscored 29-12, the whole number equivalent of 3-1.
In the first 5 innings of the first 9 games, the Red Sox are being outscored 49-17, the whole number equivalent of 5-2.
And in the first 6 innings of the first 9 games, the Red Sox are being outscored 61-23, the whole number equivalent of 7-3.
In just the last 3 innings of the game, the Red Sox have outscored their opponents 18-6, although I would place a slight asterisk due to the heavy influence of last nights game (Red Sox outscored the D'backs 7-1, but even the D'Backs run was the Avila homer off of Nunez).
Still, even if the Red Sox outscore their opponents 3-1 in the last 3 innings, it's not enough to bridge a 7-3 gap entering the last 3 innings.

The team ERA is 7.18, which surprisingly is not last in the majors, but is last in the AL and it's not really close (KC is next at 5.33). The average American League ERA at the moment is 3.74, so a long way to go to get back to average.

It also doesn't help that the staff has no faith in Sale, refusing to pitch him on regular rest on Sunday, meaning the Red Sox are probably pitching the hot dog vendor from behind 3rd base. In reality it will probably be Hector Velazquez, but what can you really hope for there? 5 innings, 3 runs?

Cora was a genius last year because every move he made came up smelling like roses.

Now he's a bum. The Boston media is almost as brutal as New York's. Funny how things change.

Like I said...they won't be down for long. They will be a different team once they get home.

They are being helped by the fact the Yankees won't pull away by much with their injury issues not getting resolved for a while.

I personally don’t think Cora is a bum but I did think they lucked on in many ways last year and because of it, Cora is buying his unconventional koolaid as Gospel. There were many times last year Sox would be winning 5-2 or 6-3 and Cora would make a strange decision and almost blow the game, but the offense would bail them out and that was that. People remember the final results but often not how they got there. Early this year he hasn’t gotten the same luck and the results prove it out. He needs to stop living in the past with the “it worked for us last year” nonsense because every season is different. I think many people like myself liked Cora last year because he was mostly honest about the state of the team, and this year he’s been a little “Farrell-esque,” making a ton of early season excuses from travel to routine to spring training behaviors.

Hard to survive terrible starting pitching. Here is a fun stat: If you take just the 3rd and 4th innings of the first 12 games, the Red Sox are being outscored in those 2 innings 35-6. If you take the remaining 7 innings, the Red Sox are only being outscored 50-45. That’s a large hill to climb. It’s just the polar opposite from last season.

1st 12 games:
‘18: + 29
‘19: -28

First 3 innings:
‘18: +14
‘19: -18

First 5 innings:
‘18: +21
‘19: -36

First 6 innings:
‘18: +28
‘19: -40

They’ve given up 48 more runs in the first 6 innings compared to last year while scoring 20 less.

Sox with a rough start but still only 1/2 game out of second place
No team played 11 games on the road before playing their 1st home game

Not sure I can ever remember a team starting a season off with that many straight road games

Boone says the team is close to "turning the corner".

Turning the corner to what? Last place?

They are going to dig a big hole by the time guys start returning from injury.

They can't pitch, hit in the clutch, and their defense is pathetic. Now Sanchez is out...his throwing was going to be a record of the wrong kind, but he was leading the team in homers at least.

Either all the injuries was due to just bad luck, or their training methods need to be looked at. When players are constantly straining or pulling muscles, that to me means they aren't training properly [or enough].

Anyway, they will be good by July...but that might not be good enough to catch Tampa or maybe the Red Sox.

It’s early but the Rays look legit at 11-3 coming off a 90 win season last year. The early returns on the Archer trade looks like a total fleecing in favor of TB.

Edit: Tommy Pham trade looking good as well -

Not sure the Yanks will completely recover this season...

Severino and Betances look to be out for quite a while.

Andujar might have season ending surgery. He's an offensive threat, but I don't miss his wild throws from 3rd.

If they get back and are healthy they will make a run later this season, but it might not be enough.

Porcello is either hot or cold depending on the season.

This season he's crap. Cora keeps running him out there, they will keep losing.
