Would be nice Spook, but we've got to wait about 7 weeks.
Now let's get a wing/SG and Gustys, and all will be well in Rhodyland.

This is fantastic news! Glad it all worked out in the end and can't wait to see Jarvis as a member of this team.

I think someone should put a note on the NCAA's or bust section about this verbal commit. K-Mac already tweeted this is a huge get.

It's easy to say now, but I love that this kid did it his way. No press conference, no build-up, not even a scheduled announcement, just I made my decision when I was ready, here it is.

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (URI Verbal Commit)
Iggy, couldn't agree more.
URI has had a bargain with Murphy getting around $125K a year. And that is after the $25K raise he got before this season.
Actually, who is the 1st asst. coach?
If it's Preston, he needs to get into the $175K range, or we could lose him. Other programs even in the A10 pay their top assistants more than that, I think.

And seriously, Preston is the freakin man. What he is doing here has been unbelievable. I know Dan basically said this himself recently, but keeping Preston on the staff was one of the best decisions he ever made.

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (URI Verbal Commit)
A side note, not that it matters, but it's typical recruiting BS that it's now being reported by Bill Koch and golocal that he picked URI over Marquette and Indiana. They never even offered. He picked URI over Creighton, and that's good enough for me.

They will notice because the staff will make sure they notice. Hurley has said that EC sticking with his commitment helped them in signing Hassan. This could have the same kind of impact.Rhodymob05 wrote:I hope other possible recruits notice asap. What a backcourt for next season

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (URI Verbal Commit)
This is a huge get, not so much for next season but for EC and Hassan's JR year which is now officially being hyped by me as THE YEAR. I think we will still feel struggles with a FR point guard, and a serviceable backup (Biggie), but in his 2nd year we should be ready for a big season. I say 17-19 wins next year, NCAA or bust the year following.

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (URI Verbal Commit)
I'll post this one. Got a message from Preston asking If I was happy?
I've been painting all afternoon, and had no idea what he was talking about.
This is wonderful news!
Congrats to Preston, who IS THE MAN!
This totally changes the outlook for next year.
WOWIE! WOW! This is huge!
Please make Preston Associate Head Coach and give him a raise!
Now a troll will come out of hiding to tell us we're foolish to think we hit one
out of the park.

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (URI Verbal Commit)
There will be plenty of time to discuss this, but even EC didn't start right away as a freshman. The ideal is Biggie wins a starting job next to EC, Jarvis gets minutes and time to develop, and TJ comes off the bench, a great role for his strengths. Then again, I thought they would have roster flexibility this year. Chickens hatching, counting, and all that.bigappleram wrote:This is a huge get, not so much for next season but for EC and Hassan's JR year which is now officially being hyped by me as THE YEAR. Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (URI Verbal Commit)
WOW!!! Was not expecting to see "verbal commit to URI" next to his name anytime soon. What a massive get for this program! Exactly what we need and have all been asking for.
Also love (as earlier stated in this thread) that there was no "look at me" press conference or announcement. He made up his mind and committed. I must have said this 100 times last season, but is it next November yet?

In the immortal words of Daniel Bryan, YES! YES! YES!
Ace, we know they cycle of freshmen working to prove they belong in the starting lineup.
I've seen him, and I gaurantee, he'll be starting before A-10 games next season.

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (URI Verbal Commit)
As I said in the gen recruiting thread, the staff really wanted to get a verbal asap. It really takes the pressure off now, and they can see how things fall with other players between now and April.

"We play freshmen" is a solid recruiting pitch.
Working on their hyperbole here, I see...
Ever? I mean, I'm pretty happy, but that's funny.

Woohoo love the pick up by Hurley and Murph. Keep the faith folks, it's not going to happen overnight and there are still bad losses and growing pains to be had but this is a great pickup.
Welcome aboard Jarvis, looking forward to seeing URI having one of the most dynamic backcourts in quite a while.

I'll feel better after the LOI is signed but great day for both Jarvis and URI! This should excite the fan base a little again! Now we need our big man for next year! I hope that was Hurley's next call after getting off the phone with Garrett, we need to ride the momentum.

What's extra nice about this is that they've been on him since at least the summer, before he blew up and started to get this level of attention. Talent recognition from the staff.

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (URI Verbal Commit)
YES!!! Nice choice Jarvis, looks like our team will be very dynamic in the future! Maybe Mr. Garrett has been keeping tabs on Rhody and realized what a great opportunity it will be to play with some of our current players. I also love that he wants to play for Preston and Dan, that must mean he realizes how intense the work will be.
Go Rhody!!!

Kudos to the staff, extremely well played. No reason now that our additional primary targets won't bite.

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (URI Verbal Commit)
EC and Jarvis will be our best backcourt since Tyson and Cat. Maybe better?
If so, NCAA tourneys are in our future. Maybe not next year, but in 2 years, tops.
One or two more pieces complete the puzzle for that to happen.
We just got a LOT closer to that next level.

If Jarvis turns out as advertised, we will be, in the immortal words of one Jim Harrick, "hard to guard".
We still have Gil too, plus hopefully more to come by April.

Per Alex Kline……….
Big pickup for Rhode Island, who was in need of a point guard. Jarvis Garrett gives the Rams a stud as they beat out Marquette.

One of Garrett's biggest strengths is getting into the lane and finding the open man on the wing. So, getting a shooter would be great too. Although, the way EC has been shooting from the outside. he could be the shooter. But another one would be great.
