Why would a starting ACC point guard and borderline all conference performer want to come play at an A10 school that is currently terrible?

Those 2 transfers would make us better....I hope.

Not happening though.

The transfer portal is about to get really busy again, real soon.

Another guard from Boston College entered the transfer portal, post grad Rich Kelly averaging 11 pts/game.

He was previously an All-MAAC performer at Quinnipiac before transferring to BC, he is from Ct.

Must be taking advantage of the extra year, has played full 4 years.

He’s had some very solid games this year.

Why can't guys at least wait until their season is over, to announce they are transferring?

His season is over with a foot injury.
He seems like he would be a good 1 year fix for us, and not as big of a reach as his teammate Tabbs.

"Boston College guard announced on Twitter that he is going to be missing the rest of the season due to a foot injury, and that he will be transferring to another school after the season.

Kelly, a graduate student transfer from Quinnipiac has played a crucial role for the Eagles this past season. To begin the year he was one of the first players off the bench, and showed a tenacity for good shooting, especially from beyond the arc. By the end of the season, due to injuries and COVID-19 attrition, Kelly became a regular starter and one of the leading scorers on the team.

He finished the season averaging 11.0ppg while shooting 42% from the field, and 37% from three point range. Kelly's best game came in Boston College's lone ACC win of the season, when he dropped 27 points against Miami, while shooting 7-12 from three point range.

This is the second Boston College player to enter the transfer portal since the firing of head coach Jim Christian. Guard Wynston Tabbs announced recently as well that he would be entering the portal."

Can't beat athletic guys off the dribble and that hurt as BC took on more injuries/COVID and he was asked to handle the ball more. Against ACC perimeter guys that's not going to end well. Shot 37% from three and a lot of those were end of possession bad looks. Would be a good fit as a15 minute bench guy for a high major team or asked to do more at a mid/small major.

For a program like ours he would be a valuable contributor, but not star talent and since it is for just one year, I like him.

Not sure we need more athletic types at this moment.

I still think transfer and recruiting goals #1, #2 and #3 should be shooting, shooting and shooting. The team is shooting 31.5 percent from 3, and "don't take them" isn't an option, because teams can currently employ the Rajon Rondo Defense against us and just sag completely into a suffocating zone. Sheppard, Leggett and sometimes Johnson are our only consistent outside shooters, and Leggett is the only one of those three who can really get his own shot consistently. Of course, the complicating factor is that *every* college basketball team wants shooting now.

Agreed, we need to find some snipers out there to fill out this class. Chance is a good start for 22', I am glad they got on him early, let's hope he sticks.
Consistent shooting has been a major problem for us the past couple years.

That percentage is lowered by Fatts injury, and Betrand. Otherwise, its seems like we definitely shot better than last season.

Totally agree with this and look at St Bonaventure they have a bunch of guys that can shoot it and they may dance while we may get the 10 seed

Sheppard and Ish are the only guys above 40 percent, and Ish is averaging only 1.3 attempts per game. Johnson is at 36.7 percent. Everyone else is under the 30 percent, "leave em open!" threshold. Last year's team percentage was... 31.5 percent, haha. Although, it did dip to 29.7 percent for conference play, suggesting that we got worse as teams scouted us. Last year, we were also 308th nationally in *attempts*, which is a hell of a stat to indicate how constricted our offense was. We're 277th in percentage and 300th in attempts this year, and with the Mitchell twins as the frontcourt going forward, it makes sense to surround them with shooters.

Like I said for the seafood and beaches. He will probably be pursued by many big programs.

Just curious why he is deciding to transfer, last year they lost starting guard Tres McGowens.
I wonder if Jeff Capel's seat is getting warm, he is 39-45 in his 3rd season.
Another high profile Pitt starting CG/SF Au'Diese Toney (6'6", 4* recruit) just entered the transfer portal he was averaging 14 pts/ 6 rebs/ 2 assists.

I wonder what is up with Pitt and Capel?

*Rhode Island recruited and offered him in 2018
What happened at Pitt would be defined as a player mutiny. The 2nd and 3rd leading scorers leave in the middle of the ACC season? And Pitt was much improved this year with next year a possibility at a top-half finish in the ACC. We'll have to see if it's addition by subtraction at Pitt but this is far different than the URI off-season situation from this past year.

Long time assistant coach moves to first chair and goes on big losing skids at the end of the season in conference play.

Anyone seen that anywhere?

Completely different from Cox. Capel has more years as a HC than he does assistant, and has three NCAAs and an Elite 8.

It was a tough situation for Jeff Capel when he got to Pitt after the disaster Stallings left behind, going 0-18 in the ACC his last year.

But not sure why he is losing 2 of his best players now.

Their board wasn't happy that no real information was given (probably to be expected) and felt the press conference was a sham

Below is another article:

Pitt gets ready to move on without Johnson and Toney
Jim Hammett • Panther-lair
Staff
@JimHammett
“It’s been an interesting week to say the least,” Jeff Capel said on his weekly radio show with Jeff Hathhorn on 93.7 The Fan on Thursday evening.

That probably sums it up best. Pitt saw two starters unexpectedly transfer out of the program this week with junior point guard Xavier Johnson departing on Wednesday and junior forward Au’Diese Toney following that lead on Thursday.

Pitt has three more scheduled games and the ACC Tournament ahead, and will be playing all of those games without its second and third leading scorers from this season.

Capel’s appearance on 93.7 The Fan was his first time talking publicly about the departure of both players. Both Johnson and Toney were part of his initial recruiting class when he first took over the job.

“There are a lot of factors that go into these decisions and again, we wish them well,” he said. “For us, we’re trying to focus on the guys that we have and to finish our season as strongly as we possibly can.”

Toney missed Saturday’s game with Florida State due to a concussion, and Capel revealed that he may have not returned at all this season.

“We knew that he was going to be out on Sunday,” Capel said of Toney. “I wasn’t sure about Tuesday, then we weren’t sure about the last game. So we’ve played a game without Au’Diese. It definitely affects our depth, our experience, those guys were two of our most experienced guys, so that’s in the short term.”

The short term effects of the transfers will be noticeable. Pitt will be down to 10 scholarship players when it takes the court on Sunday. Johnson’s departure leaves just Femi Odukale as the lone point guard on the scholarship roster for the remainder of the season.

The long-term repercussions of these decisions will be something to monitor. Pitt now has at least four scholarships to hand out prior to next season. Currently the Panthers have zero names on their commitment list,. This offseason will be highly important for this coaching staff on the recruiting trail.

"We have to recruit, we have to get guys. We have to continue to develop the young men in our program and that’s what we plan to do,” Capel said of the plan moving forward. “I look at it as it gives us two more scholarships to go out and to get guys that really want to be here and be a part of what we’re doing along with the guys that we have.”

The departures will give the current freshman class more of an opportunity. Odukale has been a key figure in the rotation all season, and has gone from being the point guard of the future, to the one of the present.

“He has a good feel for the game offensively and defensively,” Capel said of his freshman point guard. “He has good size, length. He’s a good athlete and he has a toughness about him and so that’s something we’re going to continue to work with him on and challenge him on, but he’ll certainly get more of an opportunity now.”

Toney’s departure may be handled by more of a committee approach. Nike Sibande started last game in his absence. In addition to him, Pitt has a pair of freshman forwards that have not seen as much action of late, but that is likely to change.

William Jeffress was a top-100 recruit in the class of 2020, but he is on the young side at only 17 years of age and he saw his role decrease throughout the season. Capel, though, sees a bright future for the Erie native.

“We believe in Will. We really, really believe that he’s going to be an outstanding player here and a guy that’s going to help us change this program,” he said.

Noah Collier is another freshmen that should see a bigger role down the stretch Capel acknowledged.

“Other guys are going to get playing time,” he said. “I feel like we still have good players. Everyone just has to step up a little bit.”

Pitt begins its final three-game stretch on Sunday with a game against North Carolina State. The matchup is set for 4:00 p.m. on the ACC Network.

He would solve some issues for us. I think we recruited him out of high school.

You beat me to it, haven't heard that Jay Heath is planning on leaving.

He would be an extreme longshot for us like Tabbs.

We did offer him, not sure if there was any serious interest on his part.

Cox should be very familiar with him because he is right from DC (was the #2 ranked player there) and went to Woodrow Wilson HS.

This is just a wild stab but for a 1 year fix at guard "E J" Stephens (6' 3") from Lafayette (Patriot League) just entered the transfer portal he would be a post grad.
He averaged 16.4 pts (46 FG% and 90% FT%) and looking to move on his final year of eligibility. He has a high basketball IQ and smart 3.6 GPA.
I only mentioned him because I live very close and last year saw him pour in 27 pts against Boston U.
There will be be much higher ranked transfers out there but the competition will be tough.

An interesting (to me at least) component of the transfer rules now - let’s say Schmidt takes BC job. Does he just take his Bonnie’s senior class to BC with him? Would give him a year (or two if some take this as a free year) of players to bridge the gap to his first recruiting cycle. So many times in the past a coach moves up and he tells the guys to stay (basically don’t sit a year because when you are eligible I may have overrecruited you). Now with immediate eligibility, BC could have a good senior laden team with guys who have played together immediately.

Yes, they lead the way in the A10 with transfers so far (5) followed by La Salle with 4, and Bonnies with 3

If all here stay, that means they are happy with shitty coaching, unlike Tyrese and Jacob.

Yea, without Fox we would have been "up a shits creek without a paddle" as my dear mother used to say.

For two years he was pretty much our only guy that could "score the ball"

Interesting thought but doubt very much he would do that to the Bonnies after being there for 14 years.
I actually think he may decide to stay and see it through with this group and handing out their honors on Senior Day.
With very high expectations also for next year, I think much better offers will come his way.

Has either said that? I'm more concerned with players leaving because of the shitty environment - lousy facilities and amenities, poor fan support.

Agree completely with this. He could be looking at a top 20 team or team close to what Hurley had at URI his final season. BC is an awful job as they just aren’t a college driven area with the big professional teams getting the attention. He could parlay next season into even bigger money at a much better opportunity to win

Some might argue Mike Brown was a better transfer, but he also came from a lower-level program -- Cal State-Fullerton, IIRC.

I'm going senior year Abdul over both Mike and Luther. Luther was a monster during that NCAA run and Mike was a do-it-all player that was tough as nails. But when Abdul got going he was soooo smooth offensively with an NBA like game.

Irv Chatman was a really good transfer that Kraft got from Tennessee.

I've heard a lot about Irv, but before my time unfortunately.

Not a big scorer, but he didn't have to be with Sly, Jiggy and Stan on that team. Irv averaged about 8 points and 8 rebounds, blocked shots and played tough D.
