Re: NCAA tournament cancelled
Not hating on a guy for wanting to get paid, but this is just another data point for my opinion that basically everything I like about Dan also makes him different than Bobby. I’m sure Bobby is a decent enough guy, but there’s something about him that’s just off to me. Simplest way I can say it without teeing off on a guy that I don’t know personally is that Dan’s number one trait for me boils down to character - he’s good at a lot of stuff but at bottom it all goes back to that. And I’m not sure Bobby’s character does quite as much work for him, which may be a roundabout way of complimenting his talent if you’re a Bobby Hurley guy and want to take it in the most charitable way.RhowdyRam02 wrote: ↑4 years agoThis is probably why Bobby wants the brackets announced and not some "recognition for the season's success"

Ackerman is right. For her to throw Dan Gavitt under the bus garnered from me a lot more respect for her as a Commissioner.’RF1 wrote: ↑4 years ago Ackerman and the Big East looked really bad in having their game tip off yesterday when every other major conference had already pulled the plug. They took a massive PR hit and look to be shifting the blame to an apparently rudderless NCAA basketball operation run by Dan Gavitt. Other conferences seem to support Ackerman's take on the NCAA. It would appear that it may be time for Gavitt to go. He has shown no leadership during this crisis.
There was no center of control. Gavitt went awol and still is.
VCU and UMASS were warming up and soon to tip off.
The Conference Commissioners had to step up and lead and make decisions while the NCAA was absent in taking leadership positions on anything.
I don’t blame Ackerman, in fact good for her.
The NCAA is poorly managed and led, but this crisis is showing me that it is worse than I thought.
Gavitt has to go. He has little or no respect from many of the Conference Heads.

The NCAA was actually considering a 16 team tournament instead of shutting down.

The way The Cartel worked together absent any direction from obvious nepotism hire Dan Gavitt is just more proof that they could leave the NCAA and have their own operation up and running in no time.
And they would take all the football and basketball TV with them. Because they’d be able to tell the networks, “you want our football and our national championship playoffs? You’ll take our basketball and our basketball tournament.” And there would be fewer crumbs left for the Riffraff.

The way things are happening, it looks like more of us will have a lot more time on our hands to spend on this board.
Businesses are starting to shut down.
Hope it doesn't get like Italy, where everything is closed except for grocery stores and pharmacies.
The RI casinos are closing, Foxwoods is partially closing.....Mohegan will likely follow suit.

At about the 50 second point into the discussion Gavitt talks about his empathy for the Players and the Coaches but nothing about the fans.
Gavitt is a good talker, very smooth. But looking at where the College Basketball Game has gone the past 5 years and where it appears to be heading I don't grade Gavitt very high on results.

Good to see that Dan Gavitt was found. I was concerned about him after I saw his photo on a milk carton.
Gavitt now making the rounds in damage control mode. Was no where to be found for the weeks leading up to the crisis when real leadership and guidance was needed. The man needs to go.

He has no obvious skills other than pacifying the Cartel, and he seem to be failing at that, too. Reminds me of Richard Gere in "An Officer and a Gentleman." Drill instructor Lou Gossett is trying to Bris him, and he finally says, "I GOT NOPLACE ELSE TO GOOOOOOOO!!!!!"RF1 wrote: ↑4 years ago Good to see that Dan Gavitt was found. I'm certainly no Gavitt fan, but I'm not sure I understand what you expected him to do about this situation "for weeks leading up to the crisis"? Should he have canceled the rest of the season or the NCAA Tournament back in February? The government wasn't even taking this whole thing seriously in the weeks leading up to the crisis, but the SVP of Men's Basketball at the NCAA should have been doing more?RF1 wrote: ↑4 years ago Good to see that Dan Gavitt was found. Again, not a fan of the guy and plenty to criticize him and the NCAA for, I'm just not seeing it in this situation.

He should at the very least had been in contact with the conferences about their tournaments in the two weeks prior leading to Thursday. They needed guidance about possible options that might need to be taken if A, B, C were to occur. Even the Big East commissioner threw him under the bus for saying they could not even get in touch with him. The absence of leadership caused much of the chaos this week.

He would have had to have an incredible amount of foresight to know this was all coming two weeks prior to Thursday. That would have been Feb 27th. At that point most teams still had 3 regular season games left to play. I do not recall anyone discussing anything about games being canceled at that point or tournaments being in jeopardy.RF1 wrote: ↑4 years agoadam914 wrote: ↑4 years agoI'm certainly no Gavitt fan, but I'm not sure I understand what you expected him to do about this situation "for weeks leading up to the crisis"? Ackerman's comment was in regards to the day of the tournament being canceled and the Creighton-St.John's game specifically. I did not see anything about her mentioning the weeks leading up to the cancellation. The quote specifically mentions the last 24 hours. If your argument is that things were not handled well that day, you'll get no push back from me. That was a mess. It's the "weeks leading up to" criteria that I didn't understand.
Big East commissioner Val Ackerman, however, wasn’t as magnanimous and pretty overtly blamed lack of communication from the NCAA for the ill-advised decision to tip off Creighton-St. John’s.
“We had NCAA staff, who we’ve been looking to for guidance on a video conference with our presidents a few hours ago, and they did not let on that even they knew that some of these moves were being made by these other conferences,” Ackerman said at a news conference. “So that’s kind of how the last 24 hours have gone.”

YOU NEED TO READ THIS:
Opinion: Basketball tournament chaos shows NCAA's fractured relationship with its own
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/c ... 037010002/
On the brink of perhaps the most important decision yet for the league in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, logic dictated that league officials would have been in constant discussions with Gavitt, the NCAA’s senior vice president for basketball and the point man for everything related to the tournament.
But when that topic was raised, according to a person with knowledge of the meeting who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the details were supposed to be private, the answer was surprising.
Nobody had heard from Gavitt in weeks.

Haha, DON'T WORRY I READ IT. Thats where the Ackerman quote came from. My point stands, I don't see why anyone (including the source in that article) would be expecting Gavitt to be out in front of this "weeks" ahead of time when nobody else in the country was either. There was not a single sports organization in the country that was on top of this weeks ago.

Ok. How about one week ahead when the NBA was already circulating a memo about playing games in empty arenas with no fans? Shouldn't he have started contingency plans then and begun communicating with all the leagues?adam914 wrote: ↑4 years ago Haha, DON'T WORRY I READ IT. Thats where the Ackerman quote came from. Sure, if what that source says is true, I'll give you that he might have been a few days behind in communicating with conferences and that could have led to additional confusion.RF1 wrote: ↑4 years agoOk. To kind of support you here - I think the NCAA organizations want and *like* that they each have their own conference fiefdoms, for lack of a better word. It's like boxing, but not as awful. However, when something pops up that needs strong leadership - like the coronavirus - it shows the weakness of that approach. There are obvious parallels with a lot of other organizations and structures here.adam914 wrote: ↑4 years ago Haha, DON'T WORRY I READ IT. Thats where the Ackerman quote came from. Re: NCAA tournament cancelled
How do we know what was and was not communicated?
In a March 3rd AP article discussing playing games in empty arenas, NCAA COO Donald Remy stated "If you can think of it, it’s something that we’ve gone through an analysis around. We’ve contingency planned for all circumstances. The NCAA is committed to conducting its championships and events in a safe and responsible manner. Today we are planning to conduct our championships as planned; however, we are evaluating the COVID-19 situation daily and will make decisions accordingly.”
The argument at best is should the NCAA have full autonomy over the conferences at times like this. But it's crazy talk to believe that the NCAA did not have contingencies in place.

Re: NCAA tournament cancelled
Just checked out ESPN2. They are replaying the Dayton- Kansas Maui Invitational final. For some reason, they are going with a shortened, 90 minute version, so some will be cut out.
I missed this game because it was played around the same time as the Rhody-Manhattan game, which I did attend. Some high level play in the first half. This could have been a heck of a rematch in three weeks.
If you’re looking for something to watch, it’s on until 10:00.

Re: NCAA tournament cancelled
I saw the game.....very high level basketball.
Dayton could have had an undefeated season.....they sure had their chances against Colorado.
The only really close call they had otherwise, was Crutcher's last second 3 at St. Louis.

A lot of us were watching the simulation of the A10 tourney in the other thread, that this was interesting too...even though CBS & Sportsline didnt have Rhody in the field
- Dayton wins it all
- Richmond, an 11 seed, takes down Virginia, a 6
- Poor Ed (sarcasm) still only has 1 tournament win to his name after LSU takes PeeCee out
Listen, I know its only a simulation, but thought it was interesting on what they projected

A number of people had Rhody taking the cake in the A10, making 2-3 bids for the conference.

Yeah. I substitute teach and I'm a licensed Realtor. School is out indefinitely it's sounding like, which is obviously the right decision but I miss it already. The kids are great. Real estate has come to a complete halt. Working from home for real estate, but zero business is happening. No one can close since the town halls are closing and it needs to be recorded. It's scary to say the least.rambone 78 wrote: ↑4 years ago The way things are happening, it looks like more of us will have a lot more time on our hands to spend on this board.

It was a schedule of old tournament games that CBS Sports Network was going to show, starting on Sunday night. Hopefully they’re just changing the schedule and not abandoning it all together.
