Tyson, Cat, & Odom team...no contest. You have 3 NBA guys on that squad. Too bad Odom got himself in trouble or Rhody could've had a shot at the NCAA title.

Did someone just pick a Dowtin over Tyson in a head to head. As they say on Sunday Countdown, c’mon man. I love me some Jefe, but Tyson was special. One of the best we ever had.

Picking the best teams from different eras by coach is a fun, but also futile exercise. Too many moving parts.

I look forward to the debates of picking a URI hall of fame starting 5 from the modern era.
Our current team plays much harder defense which is a major plus. Especially on the perimeter. They are a step behind offensively though. Perhaps it balances out? Not sure, but we will find out in March. I think the current team can match 98. We shall see.

agree about defense blueram. but that team was much stronger down low with ARD and Clay over Stan and Andre. I love JT, but would take Tyson and Cat over JT and Dowtin. Give EC the edge over King. Really not fair of me to compare the two teams yet. Time will tell. I'll be very happy to be wrong about this.

I laughed at that too, but I think he was comparing Dowtin to Tyson as a sophomore. I would describe Tyson as a magician with the ball. I would describe Jeff as steady and then some.

I picked the harrick era also Tyson Cat and Odom that's a lot of talent there 2 guys who played in NBA over 10 years

Great thread love revisiting all the talented players and teams over the last 30 years

Silk and Tyson my 2 favorite point guards loved them both so hard to pick one over the other

Tyson was a great player (and a better player if I’m starting from scratch) but he’s the type of guard this team has success containing. If I’m picking an all star team, I’ve got enough scorers. I’m looking for other attributes like Dowtin’s length on defense. Plus, hopefully by time Dowtin graduates, he will be one of the best we ever had as well.

Talent wise I'm not gonna have Skinner's era/teams as my pick, but one of my best memories is having friends over to watch the 1993 1st round game vs Purdue and Al basically making everyone else besides "Big Dog" Glenn Robinson beat us

Gonna have to go with the Harrick teams - Wheeler, Cat, Odom, ARD, Clay w/Murphy on bench in a close game vs Hurley - Dowtin, Terrell, EC, Hass, Iverson w/X off the bench
I also wanted to add, imagine being able to use these teams or the top players from each era in NBA Jam! that would be awesome!
My college roommates and I used to love playing college hoops 2k series. I miss the college basketball video games. That was an unfortunate loss from the likeness lawsuit.

kinda out there even just soph vs soph.

Wheeler went for 16.5/6.0 as a sophomore, Jefe is at 8.8/5.4

Sure there is, thanks to the generosity of this community about 10 or so years ago when they all shared their best VHS tapes and I archived them onto DVD. Many Many DVDs were made for fans so these games are around.

It is still possible to get DVDs of Rhody's best games going back to the 88 Run past Syracuse. Newer KeaneyBlue fans probably have no idea about these DVDs.

Here is my URI Hoops DVD Master List (each line is ONE DVD, commercials edited out [unless they're awesome old-school ones], menus added, etc etc)

I think Wheeler is an all time URI great. I don’t think Dowtin is yet. That’s not my argument. My argument is a game against each other with great players around them, I’d take Dowtin over Wheeler (whether you consider them both sophomores or forecasting what Dowtin will be like by time he graduates).

Wheeler (as a SOPH) vs Dowtin

PPG
Wheeler 16.5
Dowtin 8.8

Assists
Wheeler 5.97
Dowtin 5.45

Turnovers
Dowtin 1.2
Wheeler 3.4

FG pct
Dowtin .431
Wheeler .406

3 Pt pct
Dowtin .379
Wheeler .371

Steals
Wheeler 1.59
Dowtin 0.8

Blocks
Dowtin 0.5
Wheeler 0.02

Rebounds
Dowtin 2.9
Wheeler 2.9

Career Conference wins
Dowtin 21 and counting
Wheeler 10

Conference championships
Dowtin 1 and counting
Wheeler 0

For obvious reasons I'll take the 1978 team over all of them. the difference being they were much tougher. The front line of Chatman, Stan Wright & Sly would not be out-rebounded by any team since. Jiggy was toughest point we've had. He could score when we needed it (especially his 1st 2 yrs) & run the show the rest of the time. Never came out of the game. If they had the 3 point shot back then Nelson would have been even more of a contributor on offense. Percy DAvis was a great 6th man. Jimmy Wright, Randy Wilds, & Phil Kydd also off the bench. Very deep & tough as nails.

I'd say a Jack Kraft all star team would be the best for Rhode Island. Sly Williams was the best player I ever saw in a URI uniform. Throw in Jiggy Williamson, the Wright's, Pappy Owens, Marc Upshaw, and a ton of role players like Phil Kydd, Roland Houston, John Nelson, etc., and you've got a nice group.

I still remember watching the '78 team play against Duke in the NCAA tournament, and the announcer taking before the game about Gene Banks being a defensive stopper for Duke. Sly then treated him like a CYO player, and if it wasn't for two questionable foul calls against him, he would have single handedly beaten them.

A related question to this would be who are the Most Valuable Coaches in the long history of URI basketball? In my thoughts, it's not just who won the most, but who had the most long-lasting impact on the program? Here's my list
1. Frank Keaney, the guy who started it all and put Rhode Island on the basketball map.
2. Jack Kraft, the first nationally known coach to come to URI and prove that you can get top recruits to come to Kingston.
3. Jim Harrick, similar to Kraft, and I thought about placing him second because his short tenure led to the building of the Ryan Center. However, despite his success, he left a stink that took the mediocre Jim Baron to get rid of.
Tied for 4th - Tom Penders and Al Skinner. Both proved that you could win here, even with the shortage of resources.
Tied for 6th - Everyone else, save one.
Last - Jerry Duh.

I didn't include Dan because his tenure hasn't ended here (yet). Given the state of the program when he arrived and the work he's done to change the culture and improve the program's infrastructure, I think he's worthy of #3 at minimum. If he, indeed, turns us into the Gonzaga of the East, including regular NCAA invites and making the Final Four in this or future years, he might even surpass Keaney in my eyes.

And Sly fouled out, and two of our other starters had 4 fouls. Duke didn't have anyone with more than 3. And we still should have won.

no kidding, not to mention John Evans, who in my opinion, is as good as anyone on the current team. That team would just be lacking in depth as it is essentially the 1988 team.

An all star team of players coached by Al Skinner would probably take it in my opinion. (hands down if you count his assistant coaching years which adds Silk and Tommy) I think Jack Kraft era is probably a close second.
