Unfortunately I will not be able to attend tomorrow. I am obligated to go to a baby shower. Ram1019 hopefully will have someone to fill my seat though.

You have my sympathy, RG.
Showers of any type, baby or bridal, are mind numbing.
All the "ooh!" and "ahh!" when presents are endlessly opened.
I don't miss that stuff.

Thanks for your sympathies Rod. The couple came to mine, so I can't turn around and not support them. Its a vicious cycle.

Stuff happens, RG. I missed Sunday's game when my grandson's 2nd birthday party was postponed a day because of last Saturday's weather. I managed to follow it on my smartphone.

Siesta Key to St. Pete. Wow, now that's some Rhody dedication. Good luck leaving Siesta Key voluntarily, it's truly one of the most beautiful places in America. As for St Petersburg sports bars, I suggest MacDitton's in downtown St Pete or Ferg's directly across from the Trop. Both have plenty of TV's and awesome staff that will be happy to accomodate your Rhody fandom. I spend a lot of time at both establishments when im hiding from, errr, visitng my parents in North Venice.section(105) wrote:My seats will be filled, going to half to readjust the move from Siesta Key to St Pete's to see game on some TV......

Really far from North Venice, Italy, maybe. But from North Venice, Florida, it's about a 45 minute drive. About 15-20 minutes less then it'll take Section105 to get there. I always try and work my parents visits around when the Yanks are in town and take in a game at what has to be the worst stadium on God's green earth, The Trop.Seawrightspostgame wrote:Is it me or is st Pete realllllly far from north Venice.

Looks like tons of tickets still available on Ticketmaster. I'm guessing we'll have a worse turnout than against VCU. Really need the students to fill the place.

I went down and picked up four tickets at lunchtime today and asked for the cheapest they had. He said he had the lowest priced seats left in sections 302 and 312, end zone corners. I got 302, Row C, seats 1-4. So I guess the 'best of the cheap seats' were still available as of lunch today.eli#10 wrote:Anyone know if we have a good chance for a sellout?

I think we will see a good student turnout. If not I will be really dissapointed. 4pm on saturday is prime time to start drinking for a college student. Bring in a coke mixed with rum and GET LOUD

Love this guy (Biruta, of course)
On being the hero against Fordham: It was a team effort. I was lucky enough to get the rebound and tip it in. I was excited. People all around campus have been stopping to congratulate me.
On watching himself make the game winner on film: It's weird. I felt like E.C. or something.

Re: Game #20: George Washington - Saturday @ 4pm
My guess is that the 300-level number is not accurate, and that as those 432 tickets are sold more will be released. Hopefully they do a decent walk-up number tomorrow and we break 7000. To me, 7000 is functionally a sellout. It is pretty hard to tell the difference unless you're looking around the arena for empty individual seats instead of watching the game.twisted3829 wrote:Tickets available:twisted3829 wrote:Tickets available:

I think the lesson we've all learned from the VCU game is that the number of dots on the website is not indicative of the number of actual seats available.

Does this mean you think the attendance will exceed the VCU game? If I'm understanding correctly do you attribute higher attendance to students being back? Or additional factors?NJ03 wrote:I'll take the over of the VCU attendance and put my house on it.Section104 wrote:Looks like tons of tickets still available on Ticketmaster. Sad, but if the A-10 tourney championship game was played in the RC, with URI in it, then maybe a sellout....

I dont know if they do, but they should play "RHODE WORK" on the URI tv channels all day long. Students would eventually stumble upon it sitting in their dorms. It got me looking at the program differently. Good stuff! Really excited for the game tomorrow.

Rhody favored by 3 points. I'd be surprised if we win by more than 3 points.
I just want to win the game very badly but this game scares me especially with ECs foot issue.

Re: Game #20: George Washington - Saturday @ 4pm
GW uses a 2-3 and likes to switch up to 1-3-1 after the half. I hope Hurley has them prepared for traps and whatnot with the 1-3-1, but if we are able to pass it quickly we should get some good looks at Hassy on the baseline. You would think a team playing a ton of guards could tear up a 1-3-1 but we havent shown much promise against any types of zones

Re: Game #20: George Washington - Saturday @ 4pm
I'd actually feel much better about our chances against a 1-3-1 pressure/trapping type zone then just a sit back and dare us to shoot 2-3 type zone. I think we could attack a trapping zone much better.RIhoopz14 wrote:GW uses a 2-3 and likes to switch up to 1-3-1 after the half. Re: Game #20: George Washington - Saturday @ 4pm
We've had matchup problems with them recently.
Having said that, I think we have a real chance to win this game, but have to limit turnovers and make a decent percentage of our FT's. That's a lot to ask considering where they are now.
I look at them like I look at UMass. A team we can beat, but can we?
If EC can play relatively well, is another key factor. We need him to. GW is at least a step up over the teams we've beaten lately.

Surprised at the Vegas respect, Rhode Island is a 3-point favorite, I was kind of hoping to take them as a home underdog.

There's been discussion of them sprinkled in other threads, but thought I'd start one to talk abotu this game.
Biggest thing that will decide this game is whether we hit shots. We look great when the shots are falling, but as we've seen, too often on the road we can't hit anything.
Big challenge with URI is that they are a great defensive team. They are 9th in the nation in defensive efficiency. They play fairly slow, like us (not painfully slow like Richmond, but more like us). They have only given up more than 68 points in a game once this year (Kansas scored 78)., and haven't given up more than 65 in any conference game. Given that 72 is the most anyone has scored against us, we can expect a very low scoring game.
Per Pomeroy, their D does everything well except they foul a lot. Their 2pt. defense and 3 pt. defense are both top 35, they are 26th in forcing turnovers, and 7th in blocked shots. They are 76th in defensive rebounding, which is good, but not imposing.
On the flip side, their offense is much worse than you would think for their talent. They shoot even worse than us - 296th in 3 pt % and 300th in percentage of shots from three. They are shooting just 62.7% from the line, good for 328th in the country (and way worse than our 68.6% - imagine how frustrating that is for thier fans). They also do a poor job taking care of the ball, 309th in turnovers.
When you look at their talent, it's hard to see why the offense is so bad.
- EC Matthews is a star. He was co-rookie of the year last year, and is a big time scorer. He's the main weapon and Garino will have a challenge with him. That said, he's only making about a third of his threes (36-107) so I assume making him chuck from deep is key. He also turns it over too much, and as a result his offensive effiiency rating is just 95.4, which is surprisingly subpar.
- Hassan Martin is the second all league player. He's only 6'7" but he's a crazy good shot blocker and key to their defense. He's not an outside shooter, but he's a very effiient offensive player who can score inside in bunches.
- Gi Biruta is an undwhelming player in the middle. He transferred from Rutgers with a lot of hype and he has a kind of skilled euro offensive game, but he is slow and he struggles against big or athletic front courts. I think he's been a disappointment for them, though at times he looks good. His matchup with Larsen will tell a lot, but I think Larsen owned him last year.
- Jared Terrell is an impressive freshmen averaging around 9 a game. He's hitting 35% from three, making him the top shooter on the team (he's 19 for 54). He's not so great inside the arc, though, at 37% and is just 60% from the line. His effiency isn't good, but he's more than capable of scoring double figures and hurting someone they are holding in the 50s.
- Freshmen Jarvis Garrett and Junior Biggie Minnis split time at the point. Garrett has started the last 4 games, but he's averaging under 5 ppg this year. He can defend and pass, but his shooting is woeful (24% from three with just 9 made threes and only 34.6% from two, and just 54% from the line). Biggie Minnis has also really disappointed, as his game has never quite developed. He gets a lot of assists, but his turnover rate is off the chart (32.6%), which is what has landed him on the bench. He also can't shoot 3-13 from three this year).
- TJ Buchanen is a 6th man I really like. He's very athletic and has a knack for making key plays. He can attack the basket and dish, but like everyone else, he can't shoot from outside. He had 13 against us last year.
- 3 other players avg between 8-10 minutes per game. Jarrelle Reischel also came in with some promise, but hasn't quite clicked yet eitehr in his 2nd year and he's only played 9 minutes the last 3 games (not sure why, maybe defense, because he's a decent offensive player). Earl Watson is a back up big at 6'7", 255. He's not much of a scorer. If he's beating us, we're doing something wrong. The third guy is Matthew Butler, a reserve guard, but he's hurt and didn't play last game. Not sure if he plays tomorrow, but he isn't much of a threat anyway.
ultimately, guarding them is like guarding us - pack it down and take away the driving lanes for Matthews. Unlike us, though, they have even fewer shooters and less chance of getting hot.
But none of that will matter if we don't make some baskets, rebound the basketball, and probably get to the line some.
This is going to be a tough road game, and will probably be played in the 50s. Maybe even the 40s. Hopefully we can shake off last game, and gut it out.
