Let me offer, the Marist job is a bad one. Nice small facility, yes. Nice academics, yes. Horrible city, Poughkeepsie. Biggest negative, the women's games out draw the men, locals follow the women's team more, local print media leads with women's results= second class men's program and difficult culture to change........

The zenith of Marist basketball was when Rik Smits was there (Class of 1988) and they went to a few NCAA Tournaments as the NEC champ. I think the best they have done since that time are two NIT appearances (1996 and 2007). The appearance in 1996 was a loss to URI at Keaney Gym.

If Al just wants a job, then he could take the Marist opening.
If he wants better, then the Hofstra job would work.
Is there a New England job open?

Al Skinner was an assistant at Marist (1982-84) before coming to URI to work under Brendan Malone. Skinner was actually an assistant to Head Coach Ron Petro (later URI AD) there.

Re: Coaching Carousel 2013
Some thoughts having read this thread.
Al is a Long island product who once coached at Marist. Hofstra might make sense. You don't go back to Marist or URI.
You have to be a major screw-off to flunk out of Duke. Show up for class when not excused;turn in assignments; and you'll pass. That is the way it works at small, private, elite schools. Coach K can get in any kid he wants and he'll get by if the above is adhered to.

72, I have a friend who was a teaching instructor at Duke. She said the players are academically a cut above what you see in most programs. But most would not be at Duke without basketball.

Re: Coaching Carousel 2013
Well folks, that's setting the bar awfully high for URI to reach, if Dan gets URI to that level.
1.5 million a year for 10 years, plus more money for his staff, travel, meals, basically everything.
Who else in the A10 makes anywhere near that?
I can't see URI paying that much. Maybe a mil a year plus staff raises, plus similar program improvements. But that's it.
I can just hear the idiots at the blowjo now. The wailing and howling will be deafening.

VCU is playing the role that Temple played in the early days of the A-10...leading by example.....play anyone anywhere.....pay your coaches a competitive salary.....two sides of the same coin....follow us or be left behind....

I think URI, finally, wants to be "all in".
Whether they can be all in at VCU's level, I don't know.

If Hurley brings in the kind of money that Smart has to VCU then a huge contract is possible

Iggy, it will have to be, to keep him.
If Smart wants to be an A10 lifer, why not Dan? Chaney did it too.
Easier to make the Dance, than to swim with the sharks at say, the ACC or B10.
Or UCLA.
Shaka is now making BCS type money at a non BCS school. Why leave?

Re: Coaching Carousel 2013
Within a few years, maybe football will be gone and athletic dept revenue can be re-distributed to maximize revenues GENERATED from men's basketball. If you think about it, that's the ONLY way Rhody Athletics can survive. State appropriations are being reduced EVERY year. The ONLY source of revenue to offset expense of running a D1 athletics program in the A10 is to have a championship caliber men's hoop team.
Rhody better keep Dan happy, then. We, the fans, better keep him happy with full houses and maximum crowd support.Smart has seemingly adopted a philosophy of, "Don't mess with happy," and has reaffirmed his commitment to VCU.

Re: Coaching Carousel 2013
The key is winning, and winning big. That's what will start the cycle of "don't mess with happy" when it comes to the coach.
If we win, Dan has to get what he wants. That means just about everything, from his salary to his assistants' salary, to everything about the program. That's what VCU is doing. They are now the A10 standard bearer, the model for success.
I think Dooley realizes this. He'd better.

Re: Coaching Carousel 2013
There are other ways to pay a coach, outside of the univeristy.
Say a personal services contract in a company owned or run by a
URI alum.
The brief dance with Rick Pitino after Jerry D was fired, would have
involved a personal services contract with CVS for serious money.

Re: Coaching Carousel 2013
Rod, I know that's true for Smart and VCU. VCU by itself, even with the added revenue from the NCAA, can't afford those massive numbers.
URI won't/can't either. But the VCU model is there for schools like URI to follow.
Like ATP just said, the Ryan needs to be packed almost every night, to show the necessary support for the program. VCU sells out their home games months in advance.
Could URI do that, if they have VCU's success? It might be a little tougher, given that the Ryan's capacity is bigger [with a possible increase in the works already], and Kingston's proximity to nowhere, but it can be at least approached.

Great to hear Smart is staying. Today, on ESPN, Bruce Pearl had a good take on why he shouldn't take the UCLA job. He said that his style of play wouldn't go over well with the spoiled one and done players.( I guess that means he won't be going to Kentucky, either.)

Re: Coaching Carousel 2013
Looks like UCLA is now making a run at Stevens.
So far, he hasn't turned them down yet.
Might be the perfect time for him to go. Butler, imo may have peaked, now that they are going to the BE where they are going to find it a LOT harder to Dance in the future.
Steven's stock is still high right now. I say he takes the job. From what I've heard, UCLA will triple his $1 mil salary he was getting at Butler.

If he does end up going, that makes Butler a lot less attractive as a member of the new conference in my opinion. Would be interesting to see how they do without him.

Imo they take at least a step down. With or without tougher competition.
Could be bottom feeder city. At least they have talent on that roster, and the BE's money will help them recruit. But Stevens is special, like Shaka.

Re: Coaching Carousel 2013
I don't know if Stevens will go. I have always thought that, if he does ever go, it would be for a top-5 job (UNC, Duke, Kansas, Indiana or UCLA - Kentucky doesn't seem like a good cultural fit for him). I've thought Indiana might be the most logical. Stevens is from Indiana, and he's actually never coached anywhere other than Butler. He seems to have a good thing going at Butler - he has proven he can win big there, and now he will be able to recruit at a higher level in the Big East. But, this could also be a decent time to cash in. Who knows when one of these jobs will open up again, or who will be the hot name when one does. UCLA is a good gig, and I'm sure he thinks he can win there. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised either way.

This may be slightly off topic, but did anyone here know that Mike Babul is on the staff now at Wagner? Kind of a small world thing, no? Anyone that played or followed high school basketball in this area or the A10 in the 90s must remember the name.

Stevens' philosophy works via The Butler Way. I don't see how it would work under the glitz of Los Angeles with top flight recruits who see college as their own personal NBA d-league.
Stevens won't go to UCLA.

With the increased money from the BE TV contract, I'm sure Stevens is going to get a nice raise.
He was making 1 mil a year. I'll bet that increases to at least 1.5 mil a year, with an extention.

They hired the coach that just lost to Harvard in the NCAA first round. I guess that isn't an issue for UCLA since they once lost to the Ivy League's Princeton in a first round NCAA tourney game a number of years ago.

Re: Coaching Carousel 2013
Minnesota's athletic department continues to look like a joke. The Gophers have been turned down now by Stevens, Smart, Fred Hoiberg, and Flip Saunders.
Who does Minnesota think they are? They had zero shot at Stevens, Smart or Hoiberg. Saunders was an interesting name but this is why you don't let boosters make the decisions. What a disaster this has been for Minnesota.
Somewhere Tubby Smith is laughing. You don't know what ya got til it's gone.
On to option #5 for Minny, hopefully they will start to be a little more realistic.
