I think Cooley has everything he needs at pc......no need to leverage job openings to get the pc admins to make improvements.....so the word goes out through back channels that he has no interest in leaving his home town......Hurley has to leverage outside interest into the improvements he wants at Rhode Island.....and he doesn't seem to mind having his name out there in the media swirl when better paying jobs open up.........

.....it could be interesting when more P5 jobs open in the future.....assuming Cooley continues to progress pc to being a perennial tourney participant.....and football money can double what he makes at pc.........it is easy to turn down $2.2M when you are making $2M......harder to turn down $4M when you are making that $2M....

.....I've gotten friendly with a few coaches in my life.......it is hard to ask them to turn down doubling or tripling their salary to stay here for short money......I want the best for my friends.....

....I'd like Hurley to stay here two more years to finish his job before he takes that next leap to a P5 team......

Cooley needs to improve big time with his Xs and Os. He needs to ditch the flex offense he learned while working for Skinner at BC and really try to open up the floor.

There's not even 10 coaches that make over 3 million. You think Cooley is getting 4 in some weird future?

Most of the coaches with any success fall between the 2-3 million figure.

New Fordham Coach went on the ESPN New York Michael Kay show yesterday. Listen here to a pretty good interview where Jeff Neubauer is challenged on many fronts on how his coaching will be different from all the others before him since they joined the A10.

Neubauer says all the right things, but I'm not sure how much I buy it. Maybe he's just that confident when nobody else is? Good luck.

Jeff Neubauer could be John Wooden, Dean Smith and Bobby Knight all rolled into one, but unless the Fordham administration sees a proctologist to find its head Neubauer will fail.

Not to drag this back down to the flex argument again but there is no correlation between the flex offense and tempo. Maryland ran the flex with Gary W. and was as high as #2 in the entire country in tempo. BC with Troy Bell was up tempo. It can be done and coaches who know what they are doing can run it at pace.

I figured if a Texas-like job opened this season Shaka would give it great consideration and leave. After losing two major cogs in his team to graduation and having the season fizzle out due to the injury to his key defensive star, he doesn't want to risk his brand stalling out or getting passe.

Gregg Marshall is getting paid at Wichita State- turned down Alabama. Now set to earn 3+ million/year.

And, #Shakawatch

The timing seems right. VCU should be able to get someone very good, which helps the conference.

From everything I've recently read about Steve Patterson, he's not the kind of person you want to work for. Money's nice but if you're successful, it will be there elsewhere. Beware Shaka..

Not hearing a lot of good things about the Texas AD Patterson.

If Shaka doesn't take that job, that might be the reason.

I think ATP hit the nail on the head.
If HAVOC was really Briante Webber and his teammates feeding
off his results, Smart is wise to move.
A couple of seasons like this one and failure to get past the
first round in the NCAA, may dim his star.
He can make a boatload of money and have a rich recruiting
ground, in Texas.
Besides, with Charlie Strong as their football coach, they can be
marketed as "Strong and Smart!"

I wonder who VCU would go after if, and it's a big IF, Shaka heads to Texas.

Mike Rhoades (Rice head coach) is too inexperienced and unproven at this point, but a couple years ago when Shaka was talking about leaving I know his name was thrown around.

Anthony Grant coming back would go with the trend this year of old coaches coming back home...

Obviously VCU is a top notch program at this point and I'm sure would go after another up and coming coach like Toole. I doubt Bobby's name would be thrown into the mix, but I doubt he'd want to coach in the same conference as Danny.

Well, at least Shaka would be going for big money.
Buzz Williams was so anxious to leave the overrated NBE ,
that he took a pay cut to go to VATech.
Shaka wanted no part of Marquette. Bobby wanted no part
of Depaul.
Such a powerhouse conference that one coach takes a pay cut to get
out, and other schools can't get a decent coach, regardless of what they pay.
Marquette took a guy with zero head coaching experience, and Depaul took a
warmed over journeyman.

The headline is that Buzz took less money but the reality is the totality of the contract is probably better than the one he had at Marquette.

Really good piece here, with a mention of Hurley. My favorite line:
Just because a university is in a power conference, coaches who have the opportunity to land those gigs don’t automatically view them as better gigs than the ones they currently have. Is it really that hard to believe that statement?

Per Goodman, Shaka has an 8 pm team meeting.

Patterson talked to him in Richmond today. Almost certainly offered him the job.

I haven't read the VCU board, but heard that they are going nuts.

This certainly looks like he's gone....

Only question: Did Shaka go to Texas before this? If not, why would he accept without doing so?

I can tell you being in Austin that sports radio talked about Shaka Smart the wholle commute home and they are speculating a contract in the 3mil-3.5 mil range for 6 years. The Texas athletic director took their private jet to Virginia today.

Should be interesting what happens with their recruiting class coming in.

Next season, they would have had EIGHT 4 stars, and 3 -3 stars on that team...

Their next coach has a tough job ahead of him, to maintain that level of recruiting....

These top tier football schools are paying insane money for coaches.

Even VCU couldn't come close to paying Smart what he'll be getting at Texas.

They did make a last ditch offer, but it wasn't enough.

In the last 15 years they have had to make three hires. They have improved each time. McCarthy-Capel-Grant-Smart. They have everything in place (facilities, administration, and support) to have continued success.
