Re: General High School Recruiting Discussion/Comments 2022-23
I asked this question in Cam E’s recruitment thread initially then thought it would be better asked here.
I have a lot of extra time on my hands these days so my mind tends to drift to what if’s. It has to do with NIL and college amateurism. Anyway, here goes…
If a player decides to skip college initially and go pro, then - say 5 to 7 years later - decides to leave pro ball for whatever reason to obtain a college degree to fall back on when he’s done playing and grab some NIL money while at it, can he play college ball with four years of eligibility?
Is it possible? An unintended consequence of NIL? Has NIL nullified the amateur status of the college athlete?

No. Once you play professionally, you sacrifice your ability to play as an amateur in that sport. However, you can play another sport as an amateur, if you want. J.R. Smith is one some college team as a golfer right now, for example.Jdrums#3 wrote: ↑1 year ago I asked this question in Cam E’s recruitment thread initially then thought it would be better asked here.

Thanks for jumping in. Good point, SG. Although, I may not be fully grasping it yet.
Does/can NIL money offered and accepted make a college athlete a professional by definition? A paid for occupation? Thus, nullifying amateur status altogether?
This is just a thought exercise during the slow summer offseason on an interesting issue.

Re: General High School Recruiting Discussion/Comments 2022-23
No. Basically, the root of this can be traced to the Ed O'Bannon NCAA case, and things like colleges selling replica jerseys of student athletes. Basically, profiting off of athlete's images, likeness and performance. That's different than directly receiving a salary for your performance.Jdrums#3 wrote: ↑1 year ago Thanks for jumping in. Thanks, SG. Good stuff. I wasn’t considering the O’Bannon case. I forgot all about that. My memory no longer works that well. Thanks for the reminder.
Out of curiosity and regarding NIL, collectives and cbb recruiting, do you or any KB’ers envision, anticipate, expect any more legal challenges or how about adaptive strategies by coaches beyond what we have already seen?
Sheesh. Sounds like I am back in college working on a research paper. Sorry everyone but my brain could use the exercise, if it’s no inconvenience. Thanks.

Yes 78, I saw that earlier on verbal commits and was wondering the same thing.
As a matter of fact, 'I posted it earlier but immediately took it down because I couldn't find much information on him and wasn't sure it was legit.

Re: General High School Recruiting Discussion/Comments 2022-23
ESPN finally updated their 2023 rankings, which makes the 247 composite scores more accurate:
https://247sports.com/Season/2023-Baske ... mRankings/
St. Joe’s is the highest ranked A10 team (16th) with their three 3 star recruits. There will likely be some changes as the teams below them fill out their classes but a nice showing for them so far. The SJU page, for some reason, still has their head coach listed as Phil Martelli. Time for a refresh, folks!

Yes, good size, footwork, skill and shooting threat at center.
He has a strong recruiting class for '23.
I think he has a nice roster for 22-23 and they should make some noise. after losing so many players from last season.
I don't think we will see those billboards going up in Richmond anytime soon.

4* top 100 (G) George Washington 111 just decommitted from Ohio State.
Interesting that his dad just got hired as an assistant WBB coach at Dayton.
He would be a huge get for Grant if he commits to Dayton.

Wherever he lands I predict he’ll be first on offense, first on defense and first in the hearts of his teammates.

Will be interesting watching how the Dukies survive without Coach K running the program. I’m sure they will be fine but I’d enjoy their fans reactions if they take a nice dip.

Re: General High School Recruiting Discussion/Comments 2022-23
It could be the P5 directing recruits there for seasoning until they can portalize them.
Nah…I am just joking around.
Overall, I think the A10 has a very good group of coaches and recruiters in place. Hopefully, the conference can assert itself and have success. I think it is very possible.
I think that success could look like up to 5-6 teams in play for a tourney bid. For example, 3 bids (including conf tourney champ) and 2-3 in the bubble discussion in a given year. I think the conference has the coaches plus enough committed programs to pull it off. Especially, if the coaches stick around for a while.

Ben Hammond G 2024. Paul VI

Article about the Championship Game in March vs DeMatha

G. Ben Hammond, Paul VI
When Darren Harris was lost for the season late with a wrist injury, Paul VI somehow barely missed a beat. That’s because Glenn Farello was able to turn to Hammond. The sub-six-foot guard delivered in a huge way with more playing time. A very good defender and ball-handler, Hammond also was able to contribute offensively–to say the least. He led PVI in scoring with 20 points in a big win over Gonzaga. In other playoff games he was able to feed the Panthers’ big offensive weapons, while still knocking down clutch shots as needed. Dug McDaniel will be a huge loss next year, but Hammond is a great guy to step right in and run the Panther attack.

Seems like a good weekend to get someone on campus. Weather forecast looks nice, sold out football game, practices in full swing etc
