Re: Game #24: Massachusetts - Wednesday @ 7pm
Makes a huge difference, when there are 4 or 5 guys sharing the load, instead of relying on 1 or 2 players.
Our entire starting five had good games, and JR and TJ played well too.
Almost everyone shot the ball well too, from the field and the FT line.
Now let's play more like this on the road the next 2 weeks!

Fantastic defensive performance in the 2nd half. Love to see the freshmen improve, Garrett was terrific tonight. Took my usual seat in 309, which was populated by Umass fans tonight. They were really loud, but not rude or anything, which was nice. Regardless of how it ends, this season has been really, really fun. Let's go beat George Mason by 50.
Go Rhody!

Haha, I appreciate the offer, but I'll stick with the 71 degrees we had today.ramfan85 wrote: Very good point. They all played within themselves tonight.
I guess we're getting spoiled with Hass. Whenever they don't have to replace the backboards after a game, it seems like a quiet game.
PS Want some snow out there? We've got plenty to spare.

another electric atmosphere at ryan center.. could get use to that... great effort by the rams.. if they start hitting there outside shots watch out!!! aggressive on the offensive boards especially.. never let umass get on a big run... keep it going!!! one game at a time!! Going to have to move closer if this white stuff keeps falling.. ride home only negative

ps.. no one can convince me that if this team keeps playing "D" the way there are and their offense continues to improve the way it is trending that they are not one of the top 68 teams in the country.. Just saying!!

I can tell you one thing - with the way we play, none of the top 67 teams in the country would want to play us.ram1980 wrote:ps.. no one can convince me that if this team keeps playing "D" the way there are and their offense continues to improve the way it is trending that they are not one of the top 68 teams in the country.. What a big win! I thought the foul trouble throughout the game for Esho was huge... it seems like he has absolutely killed us in other games up until tonight. Huge games from both Terrell and Garrett.... probably the best "combined output" from them thus far in their young careers.
It was also great to see Biruta play so effectively this game. The 4 offensive rebounds really jump out to me--- some seemed to be at very crucial points in the game. Overall, a great team win and on to George Mason!

Re: Game #24: Massachusetts - Wednesday @ 7pm
Well you know how the committee likes to talk about teams passing the "eye test"?
Well we aced that test tonight.
We've been playing almost all low scoring, defensive struggles, until recently.
We're starting to break out of that mold, at least offensively, now. That's what we needed to do, to get to that next level.
TP, you can say that again. In the tournament, our opponents wouldn't know us as well as our A10 opponents do. Our defense would make life miserable for them.
The only concern, is how the refs would call our games. If it would be like the St. Joes or Richmond games, all our players would foul out.

Some great stuff here from Will. This is my favorite...
“Past series, losing streaks – coaches put some of that stuff up in the locker room to try to motivate these guys,” Hurley said. “I didn't like it. I ripped it down yesterday because this team didn't deserve to see that we've lost seven games in a row to UMass, because this team hadn't. Other teams had.” - head coach Dan Hurley, on viewing the game as a beginning, rather than the end of a streak

Obviously there are teams that are much, much better than us. But the way we play is difficult for teams to deal with. Even a Kentucky would much rather see a finesse team than a team that will make them get into a rock fight. I'm not trying to get far ahead of ourselves here, I'm just saying we play a style other teams don't really want to play.bressler3south wrote:I love your enthusiasm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!TruePoint wrote:I can tell you one thing - with the way we play, none of the top 67 teams in the country would want to play us.ram1980 wrote:ps.. no one can convince me that if this team keeps playing "D" the way there are and their offense continues to improve the way it is trending that they are not one of the top 68 teams in the country.. Re: Game #24: Massachusetts - Wednesday @ 7pm
Back from a super night.
I hung around and talked to Gilvydas, and Daryl Jasper.
What a great credit to the program Gilvydas is. He and the other players
were well aware of the recent history with UMass, regardless of
Dan's quote.
Actually it's a super bunch of kids that Dan has brought in,
and made us proud of.
What a game!
Started off like the VCU game, in that the refs looked like they
had it in for Dan. One in particular.
They took Hassan and Terrell out of the game.
Still, we had the lead at half.
Terrell was great all night. He's everywhere on the court.
I thought the real star of the night was Jarvis Garrett.
He relentlessly attacked the UMass defense scoring or dishing off,
or creating chaos on both ends of the floor.
So much of what he does is not on the stat sheet.
EC played well except for the six turnovers. He's always a
threat to score.
Gil played another solid game.
Hassan was terrific in the second half and finished with the two
fouls he got in the first half!
Reischel contributed a spark, and kept things moving.
Watson played very little.
TJ was TJ. Mr. Energy and hustle.
Biggie was good on defense.
Really not much not to like.
To hold Lalanne and Escho to their low numbers was significant.
They made a run to cut it to nine midway through the second half,
by their guards making some real circus shots.
They ran out of gas, and put up a couple of airballs, late.
Wonderful night.
Sucked driving home, with the snow coming down
and everyone wisely driving fairly slow.
Can't wait for next Wednesday!
Our crowd was super! Students showed up big time.
The sausage and pepper sandwich was as good as it gets.
Alissa Datt was gorgeous. Nice gig. Do one interview and out.
So, overall, as a basketball event goes, A plus!

Re: Game #24: Massachusetts - Wednesday @ 7pm
not much to add that hasn't been said
Terrell is 23-25 from the line in last 6 games. And getting better every game on offensive end.
Our defense is best described as suffocating. #Rhodeblock
Garrett, Reischel and Biruta were the difference makers to me. All contributed above their numbers and made big plays at crucial times.
EC is playing tentative on offensive end, over thinking and just doesn't look comfortable with ball in his hands. Despite that he scores 16. We cant win without him so we have to deal with the TOs until he rights the ship.

Great result! Got home in time to watch the second half (listened to 1st half on car ride home).
Why is it that when watching URI basketball games the sound of the crowd noise is turned down. It hurts setting an accurate and more attractive atmosphere for anyone watching the game on TV.
Flipped over to watch ASU/UCLA and Duke/NC after the URI game and it's a world of difference with the crowd noise actually coming across on the broadcast. Grrrrr. Pet Peeve.

Re: Game #24: Massachusetts - Wednesday @ 7pm
Great evening of basketball. There is nothing better than walking in at 6:20 and seeing the line of students go around the block. Nice to see those jumpers from Jared and Terrell, what an improvement over the past month (although JT late in the game took one with no one under the basket, I screamed "no" as he shot the ball - oops). Big kudos to Gil. I thought he played a tremendous game. We criticize him at times for playing soft. Tonight he was animated and very tough on the defensive blocks. Nice work by the subs. With Hassan and Jt sitting in the first half, we did not lose the lead. JR - nice work, and no missed layups. With the snow, I got home around 11:30. It was worth every minute of the drive to see this one. Go Rhody!

Jared Terrell's 12 foot jumper to put us back up by double digits was a huge point in the game. He was fearless on that shot.

Re: Game #24: Massachusetts - Wednesday @ 7pm
You don't see it often in basketball, but it felt like URI got UMass to tap out. How many airballs did they have in the last three minutes? They looked like a team that didn't even want to shower and change, they looked like fans that wanted to leave early to beat the traffic. And that all starts with their "leader" Cady Lalanne. With his size and talent he should dominate, but far too often he just disappears. I guess no one told him it was for first place and we all know he doesn't think it's a rivalry game. If I was a UMass fan he would definitely be my least favorite player.
I don't know what the actual numbers were, but that certainly felt like a really great night shooting from the line. Both by percentage and clutch makes.
I complained after the VCU game about ads stifling the crowd at a key moment when they called time out. This is probably the point of the post where EZ tells me I'm wrong, but it felt like they moved the Come on Feel the Noise time out to earlier than normal in the second half, to come right after the first UMass time out when we had them on the ropes. If I'm going to gripe about VCU, then I have to say the operation from a fan experience point of view last night was nothing short of outstanding, and it certainly contributed to the win.

Agreed with ECR. On SNY the building looked overflowing and it sounded louder than any Rhody game I've watched on TV in recent memory (I was at the Nebraska game so didn't see what that looked like on TV). Let's do the same in pink on Wed night and welcome Davidson to the A10 in style.ElmCityRhody wrote:Thanks to all the great fans on this board who went to the game last night..
