I agree on Biruta. When he came back from injury he was very aggressive and got in foul trouble. He then became passive on D so we wouldn't get in foul trouble. He needs to find that fine line, and against LSU I think he did.Essam wrote:Great win and this is what I expected to see when in Italy. I would like to see better result on lay ups and shots close to the basket. 11 such shot were missed in the first half and 15 in the second half. {not all reached the rim and sometime s there were multiple attempts}. Turnovers would also fill a bakery store
I think Biruta is a victim of the change in rules this year that allows no contact. The LSU game was ref'd like a big east game. It was enjoyable to watch this game.

If you watched Rhody to Rome I found it interesting when Biruta mentioned that in European basketball there is no such thing as an over the back foul.

Lots of good press and reaction to URI's win over LSU. Southern Miss fans were especially happy to hear the news. It gives them a RPI boost.
As of this morning, here is a profile of the impact of this win had on URI's rating in three key measuring systems.

Re: Game #15: LSU - Saturday Jan 4 @ 5:30pm ET
I bet our RPI would have been up at least 30 spots even if we lost. The LSU Tigers helped our Opponents and Opponents' Opponents' components which account for 75% weight on the overall RPI score. The Phase II which is our Opponents' winning percentage got the best bump and is weighted at 50% of our RPI score. Adding a team with LSU's W/L record was huge no matter what the outcome.Rhodymob05 wrote:what a jump in rpi
The fact that we won or lost only affects our own winning % which is worth just 25%. The win on the road gave us an additional boost since road wins are counted more than home wins when calculating the winning % component. Road wins count as 1.4 wins and road wins as 0.6 wins when adding up each side. Same thing with losses where Road losses only count as 0.6 losses and home losses hurt as 1.4 losses.
In the eyes of the RPI, our winning percentage is calculated as:
6.4 Wins and 5.2 Losses RPI Win%: 0.55172
Basketball State has a great DeepRPI breakdown:

So SLU will give us a bump also?
Very excited for that game. On eggshells over what to post/say in fear of the j word.
Rhode sure has a good thing going right now. Encouraging. Extremely encouraging that they won and didn't play a perfect game. I think that will show them success can be had with effort and details.

Re: Game #15: LSU - Saturday Jan 4 @ 5:30pm ET
from Bill Reynold's "3 for 1" article yesterday on PC, the Patriots and Day Hurley....................
Dan Hurley
It hasn’t been the easiest start for Dan Hurley at URI, who all but arrived here in the spring of 2012 to the sounds of trumpets blaring, the hot young coach in the Northeast with the famous basketball pedigree.
But the old line says that you’re never as popular as you are in your introductory news conference, and it didn’t take long for Hurley to understand that the URI job was tougher than he thought it was going to be. An 8-21 season last year will do that to you.
Or as the other old line says, if things were going great the old coach would still be here.
So it was for Hurley.
He is one of those coaches who always wears his emotions on his face, the good, the bad, all of it. One of those coaches who always seems to be in some private hell as soon as the game starts, off in some private torture chamber that only he can understand. It’s the way he came of age, of course, with the famous coaching father, and the famous older brother who is college basketball royalty, the two role models who set an almost impossible standard.
These are the bloodlines, so is it really surprising that he seems to wear all that weight on his face when he coaches? All that, and a young team, too?
But Saturday at LSU was his best win at URI, a road win against a very talented opponent, a game the Rams were not supposed to win. The kind of game that all but grabs you by the throat and makes you pay attention. The kind of game a young program can build on.
The best win of Dan Hurley’s short time at URI.

Say what you want about Reynolds, he's a true basketball junkie.
He loves the sport, and knows his stuff.
He may be annoying at times, but we all read him, don't we?

I've always liked the For What It's Worth Column
I've always liked mentioning how many times he using the "crime or such and such a jumpshot away" but I've always liked him, and he's a south county guy who has always been fair to both URI and PC.
He is no Jim Donaldson

Yeah, we do, Rod. He's our generation so we "get" him, I guess. But those sentence fragments. Annoying as heck.
I still read his FWIW, but now more for amusement than nuggets of information. Twitter, blogs and bulletin boards beat him for all the gossipy stuff.

LSU looked bad tonight at home against an unranked Tennessee team losing 68-50.
