While chasing my son around the Ryan Center concourse (sure beats watching that Rams football team right now), I spotted the Ryan Center staff packing up the old basketball floor. It didn't look like they were simply "putting it away" for a day (especially since there are no events scheduled for the Ryan Center for a couple weeks).

They had a big staff of guys down there wrapping up each piece in what looked like industrial strength ClingWrap and stacking them all down the west sideline.

I wonder if the new floor is en route (it's gotta be done by now) and expected early next week for the guys to practice upon.
I was walking through to get to will-call for football tickets, and they were packing up the floor. I got all excited; thought I was going to get to see the new design!

The little preview we saw had NO keaney blue but I'll wait for the full picture before passing judgement.

I don't have a photographic memory, but I don't remember seeing much keaney blue outside of the interlocking RI logo (which is half Keaney, half navy) at center court.

The navy blue color provides better contrast for any lettering you may see on the floor for sponsor logos and whatnot.

The only things you can't determine from that leaked photo we saw already are:

1) Floor Sponsor
2) Size of RI logo at center.

It's a beautiful, clean floor. Can't wait to get our first live look at it and win on it!

I'm OK with their name on the court.
They are a local RI company and I'm sure they wrote a nice check for the honor.

I think once we see the actual court it will look even better then the mock-up they just released.

I like it.

And, like CVS, locally based. Not like Citizen's Bank Park in Philly, for instance.
I think Balfour designs most championship rings in the sports world.

New floor is beautiful... so much better than the rendering on GoRhody.com!!

I had been hinting at a new floor sponsor in recent posts. Alex & Ani is BIG TIME, and seems like they print their own money. I haven't seen many sporting venues where they haven't been a sponsor/partner.

And we'll also have new backstops, backboard glass, and goals from Spalding like this, same as they use at the NCAA Final Four:

UCLA has them:

See, there IS a difference.
As for CVS, be mindful. of there was no CVS, no Tom Ryan as their CEO, then
we're in Keaney Gym this year.

I can't tell the difference with the backboards... gonna have to find a photo from last season.

EDIT: OK, yeah, they're quite different. Looks like we've had the same backstops since the Ryan Center opened. 4 or 5 years ago they updated the Daktronics scoreboard system and put the translucent shot clocks on them, but that's about it.

Guess we don't have to worry about making this list anymore. Good riddance, old court!

the new court design is great, classic and simple stated. well done.

alex and ani is an interesting partner, quite a case study to examine how a brand that sells primarily to twentysomething girls managed to use sports marketing so effectively. not the traditional vehicle to reach that market. but clearly its working. they are all over NYC as well, i think they have an ad in the NY Post every single day....no joke.

I knew that. Was trying to make a point, clumsily I might add. Court gets a B plus in my book. Not enough Keaney Blue. We are forgetting our roots.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. I live in Dallas, my wife is from Houston. When I can't watch the games I'll stream it over internet radio. As a result, my wife is subject to constant Alex and Ani messaging... She used to be annoyed because of how much it was aired... yet... oddly enough, she now knows who they are, and owns some of their jewelry too!

From someone who has a degree in Marketing, the use of sports marketing by Alex and Ani is great because you get the wives/girl friends of men going to the games, as well as exposure to the men who buy gifts for them and those that do not go to the games...

Some of our brethren to the north, seem appalled at the naming of the court
for a commercial sponsor.
One dope thought those were the names of a donor's kids!
A couple of others seem to get it.
